The Black Panther Coming to BET
Source: Variety April 18, 2008

Marvel Comics has signed a deal to turn one of its superheroes, the Black Panther, into a primetime animated series for BET, starting early next year.

Variety says BET made the announcement at its upfront presentation in New York as the highlight of a batch of new series being readied for the 2008-09 season, under the supervision of Reginald Hudlin, president of entertainment for BET.

My only fear is, by it being on BET they are gonna strip it of it's true roots and make it hip-hop/ghetto friendly.:csad:

Great character.

Terrible network choice.

I'll admit I don't watch BET, but aren't people a bit paranoid?
Who's to say they'll compromise the integrity of the character?
This is a strong black fictitious role model of sorts, one of the most "worth while" black heros, who as far as I know didn't start off as a petty thief before becoming a hero.
He is the ruler of an impregnable African nation, this could be momentous.

I can't lie, I love BP but it going to BET is the worst thing that can happen. Good thing is that Hudlin is still on it which I'm hoping that he can keep it to it's comics roots. I know a lot of people hate Hudlin and call him anti white but dude did grow up in the 60s and that's not something that you can easily forget. I'm going to give it a chance................if I can stomach BET at all. Of all the networks!! :(

I may hate BET, but I'm not about to piss and moan about BP being on BET. If the show turns out to be good, I'll be pleased as punch that it's on BET! I'm not going to treat the network like a lost cause, despite its countless transgressions. Maybe if BET had always been a garbage network, I'd be more upset, but it certainly had moments of greatness in the past, and can again if they really work at it.

I've wanted to see BET do something other than show reruns and ape MTV shows, so I'm hoping it turns out good.

Let's hope it sticks true to the original source.

Let's wait and see, maybe it'll do justice and be good

You never watched boondocks, did you?

Am I glad he's getting a series? Yes. Am I glad it's on BET? Not so much. I don't want this shuffled inbetween a lot of other garbage, at least make sure it's in prime-time or something so people can find it.

I think a prime time animated Black Panther series is very cool indeed. I hope the original costume and his battles with M'Baku The Man Ape over their homeland of Wakandaare featured. I would also like to see young T'Challa defeat Klaw causing him to lose his hand and being a regular enemy for The Black Panther.

I love the idea. At least Marvel is getting their characters out unlike DC who only do Batman and Superman. But just.......................BET. That brings it down a notch. Like I said, I'm goign to still watch it but I'm sure the commercials of the programs on BET will get me down.

prime time???

very interesting, it may take on a very adult feel....

I hope they don't have a crazy embargo and allow other marvel heroes to show up, I'd quite like to see an animated version of t'chaka kicking captain america's ass to be honest...and carrying his ass back

I like it better when they have a movie starring Chiwetel Ejiofor instead of a cartoon.

Never saw the show, but I enjoyed the little rants in the newspaper comic strips.
Why, what's so awful about the show?

Nothing, its just fun watching how they rip BET a new one all the time.

BET on Boondocks= Black Evil Television. Boondocks likely isn't far off.

Like Terry said above, BP being adapted into a series isn't bad (Why he still isn't getting a movie is still blowing me away, though), but it being on BET is bad. I mean, that channel is horrible, and many people try to avoid it. Because it's on BET, a big part of BP fans will either not know about it, or won't watch it just because it's on the network. I'm hoping that the show will be quality, and it does not get caned.

And now, at least we know that Honsou's "dream role" will be in TinTin, not Black Panther. :o

Agreed! Just the mention of BET turns this wet dream into a bedwetting. Fun for a few people but gross for most. :o

And I also don't want it to get an early cancellation, like that Hey Monie cartoon did. It was one of the more clever shows, and it was done by the guys that did Home Movies and Dr. Katz, but the BET schedule just engulfed it.

I can see it now...

*FADE INTO JUNGLE PLAINS*

WE SEE TWO WHITE POACHERS GETTING READY TO SHOOT AN AFRICAN ELEPHANT

Suddenly a streak of black comes down from the trees to the right of the poachers

BLACK PANTHER:

Yo, whats up my *****s? Don't make me bang you in da mouth!

*knocks out both poachers*

Ya dats right cracka'z, dis is one ***** you don't wanna mess with! BOOM! Crank dat Black Pantha! Yah BOOM! Black Pantha dat hooooooooooooo!

I have no problem with it being on BET.
If the animation is good, the stories are good, and they stay true to the comics (hopefully Kirby's original designs and intent) then it should all turn out fine.
I just hope the animation isn't Boondocks style, I am not a fan of that animation.
But I will give the show a chance, just because its on BET doesn't mean that it will get instantly cancelled. Clerks was on ABC and got cancelled.
Also, I am sure any comic fans out there will become instantly aware of the show once it gets started. News will, if not already, spread all over the internet and on tv.

I still think BP should get his own movie though, but a tv series gives them a chance to evolve the character further than a movie could, and an animated series gives them a chance to do things live action can't.
So I can't wait to see.

BET, back in the day, was a decent network, but ever since that 'koon', Bob Johnson sold it to Viacom it's gone to ****s. The chick that they have running it now, doesn't know what the **** she's doing. When it comes to blacks, it seems like Viacom just wants to keep us dumbed down with music and comedy shows/re-runs. Hell they don't even have the news anymore with Jackie Reed, or that show with Ed Gordon. The network has sunk down to nothing more than another tool for keeping us negroes dumb and ignorant. :cmad:

Even TV1, another network that caters to African Americans, have more intelligent programming than BET, and it's a new network compared to BET, which has been around for decades.

Put BP on Spike or HBO. I foresee BP being canned after it's first season.

I may wait for the dvd release of this one.

Well, BET gets my respect for airing all the seasons of Diff'rent Strokes lately.

Exactly! It's worse than MTV now, and that's saying a lot! I don't even watch BET at all no more..................probably cuase they cancelled BET Uncut but still their programs suck. There is nothing positive about the channel at all now.

Very little hope for this. If it is 100% better than the Blade TV series… it will still suck.

The show will probably be good but because no one seems to wanna watch it because it's on BET it will probably end up getting canceled. I myself am going to at least the watch it when it starts just to see how it is.

If this gets some decent ratings, i predict it'll force BET to re-evaluate their programming.
