Comics Official Fans of Reilly Thread - Part 1

I read about this new Kaine stuff. Seems strange as I heard Kaine had died resurrecting Kraven...:csad:

As I remember, Kaine killed somebody and went to jail for it. Peter will rearrange the Universe to save his already dying aunt (who had actually died before-it was a great death).

Is Ben the true hero of the three... I think so.

But the demand is there...almost every Comic-Con there's always a Ben Reilly question throw out. If this new Scarlet Spider is Kaine what possible stories will be told? He's not angry anymore so...what is it ??

Because Marvel hates being wrong. They don't want to admit that they overreacted when they killed him.

Well, the current people at Marvel were not the ones that made the decision at the time. I was reading those books when the Clone Saga books were hitting the shelves and, in hindsight, it was a huge overreaction. However, at the time the fan outcry was really that brutal...and this is before message boards and the Internet was just starting to get very popular.

And don't really see anywhere where anybody at Marvel hates Ben Reilly. As someone who loves the Clone Saga probably more than anyone I'm pleased to see what they're doing right now. Ben Reilly turned to dust. He freakin' disintegrated. There is NO coming back for that character. They are giving you Kaine and that's about as close as you're going to get. The fact they are even going that far is a testament to them wanting to at least please the Clone Saga fans...which the fact that there are ACTUALLY a large section of Clone Saga fans is baffling...because trust me...in 1998 being the ONE guy who LIKED the Clone Saga and LIKED Ben Reilly being the one true Spider-Man I was KIND of an outcast in the comic shop.

I'm totally on board, and think a lot of people are overreacting. I don't think its anything as silly as the people at Marvel not wanting to admit being wrong, especially when they had nothing to do with the decision. Maybe they didn't want to bring Ben back because then there would be 3 Peter Parkers running around. I actually liked Kaine since the beginning, and I just really like seeing him healed, and getting a second chance. I don't mind him being a little darker than Peter, but hopefully he isn't in full on Punisher mode.

I hate to admit it... and there is a major aside to this concession, but right now Kaine makes for a more interesting story. He's a killer with a checkered past that has a chip on his shoulders and a lot to atone for. Including the years he tormented Ben. Ben was essentially Peter, they were the same. Marvel did their best to make him a likable character in his own right during a time when the real deal was not striking the right chord with fans. Really, the differences from Peter we wanted them to explore with Ben make the most sense with Kaine. There is enough of a difference to justify a new title. I liked Ben as much as anyone in this thread, he was the first Spider-Man I read about back in the day. Ben will always be that likable hero who overcame being a nothing to reclaim his life. He was the same, but different in little ways. The comment before about Ben turning to dust is the most poignant. Marvel made sure he was gone and never coming back. They felt the need to make that statement to their fans at the time. Clone Saga fans should be happy about this. It's not Ben but it's so close it's almost painful we just didn't get exactly what we wanted. But it'll make for a better story. I'm confident of that.

And most importantly, Kaine's going to have to deal with what happened between him and Ben. Which means more Ben material. I can live with that.

Crazy to think this may have been in the works since they brought back Kaine in Web of Vol. 2 Issue 1.

OK I hear you guys and understand what you're all saying. BUT is anyone else distrubed that he dusted when every other clone that died (except Kaine) turned to goo?? Plenty of story there. Maybe its just me that think that's there's something to that...I'm on board with the Scarlet Spider Comic...but I'm a Spiderman fan and what he stands for( Great Power Great Responsibility and not killing) and IMO Ben not IS that and much more...Kaine killed before and now he'll parade as the Scarlet Spider, knocks two birds out with one stone.... I guess its wait and see.

The main reason Ben Reilly was turned into dust was because it was Marvel, at the time, saying that Ben Reilly is dead...will stay dead...and there is never any coming back.

What the genius' who made that decision didn't realize is that there was an entirely new generation of Spider-Man fans who only knew of Ben Reilly as their Spider-Man and that about 5 to 10 years down the line there would be a large section of fans asking for his return.

Today's Marvel has definitely done a good job of TEASING a Ben Reilly but I think this is the best we are going to get and hopefully the Clone Saga fans step up and make Scarlet Spider a hit so that we can prove to Marvel that killing Ben Reilly was the DUMBEST decision that was ever made.

It was kinda the same way at my LCS, only the Co-Owner there also was a fan of the Clone Saga, though not as much as me....
Everyone else hated it...

Yeah, some people these days don't know what it was like back in the day. There weren't message boards so you only got to talk about comics in the comic shop with the others who were picking up their books. During that time period I was a 16 year old kid who LOVED Ben Reilly and I had 30 to 40 year old men berating me because I liked a fictional character that they thought raped their precious Peter Parker. :oldrazz: It was not a fun time.

Then Marvel goes and KILLS my favorite character and I dropped the book for five years.

At least we have the .1 story sometime this November.

Imagine what it was like 20 years before that when I was a young kid and the only people you could talk comics with were the few nerds at school that bought them from the nighbourhood store like I did...

:yay:

:o

Here is what they have released so far:

Ahh thankyou! The new costume certainly looks...interesting (though i still prefer the original, sure I'll warm up to it tho!)

So Kaine is the new Scarlet Spider? is there any confirmation of this or just speculation? either way I can dig it, I always liked Kaine.

With all of these elements from the Clone Saga returning. I'm kind of curious to see if they'll bring back Spidercide at one point or another.

Something I thought you guys might like.

I wouldnt mind Carolyn Trainer returning, or Stunner.

I admit, I'm looking forward to this. PP:Spider-Man 75 will always have a special place in my heart. (Norman not only returns but manages to kill a Spider-Man? Its a Goblin fanatics dream come true!) Still, I did come to miss Ben. True, Kaine isnt Ben, but he's darn close. Didn't Ben also have an angry side to him? Wasn't that one of the reasons that he was popular with fans? Kaine has his issues as well, plus a long history to make up for. The conflict in his character should make for great reading. I even like the nod to the Scarlet Spider, by re-using the name. It sure shows that Kaine has finally made soem degree of peace with his hated "brother."

I have to wonder, what will Kaine call himself? Will he go by the Ben Reilly name?

I sincerely doubt Spidercide will ever return. That was one of the more universally groan-inducing elements of the entire saga, forget the real/fake debacle.

Hobgoblin, where'd you get that pic and is there a larger version of it?
