Comics Official Fans of Reilly Thread - Part 1

I sincerely doubt Spidercide will ever return. That was one of the more universally groan-inducing elements of the entire saga, forget the real/fake debacle.

Hobgoblin, where'd you get that pic and is there a larger version of it?

Agreed. That never made sense to me. Why would a clone of Spider-Man have the ability to shapeshift?

Love this one!

Let's keep the Ben Reilly/clone stuff here. Two threads will get confusing.

Yeah, I agree with you there. If it's Cho then he really did a change up in his style. Either way it's a great montage piece and kudos to the artist!

That's even cooler. Do we know who the person was that drew it? They really did a heck of a job with that. Whoever it is should definitely submit their portfolio to some comic companies out there they could go places.

To wrap this week, we've got two questions about series spinning from "Point One" regarding some characters we haven't seen yet. New questioner Spiderkihl asked, "With Kaine being introduced as the Scarlet Spider this week i guess my question is what went into the process of deciding to bring Kaine back and make him the Scarlet Spider over Ben Reilly? Ben Reilly is still my favorite character and I'm just sad we haven't seen him brought back yet. It just feels like Kaine has been turned into Ben lite and i just wish we had the real thing. Any chance on bringing Ben back in the future?"

Alonso: Hey, Spiderkihl, where you been? Kaine has been a supporting player in “Amazing Spider-Man” for the past couple years and played a massive role in Dan [Slott]’s “Spider-Island” epic. And hopefully, Chris [Yost] and Ryan [Stegman]’s plans for Kaine will prove that Kaine is anything but a stand-in for Ben Reilly. As for Reilly, let me turn this over to Spider-Man editor Steve Wacker:

Wacker: Sorry, Spider-Kihl, but there are no plans for Ben Reilly. My belief is that his story was told completely during the 100+ issues of the “Clone Sage” 15 years ago. Bringing him back just to appease a few fans doesn’t seem to be doing any service to that character. He had a complete, highly emotional and final journey and it’s better to leave that story told.

Garbage

You just can't please anyone... if someone had told me 5 years ago that we would have a Scarlet Spider on-going in 2012 with a clone of Peter Parker behind the mask, I would have laughed in their faces.

Sure... it's not Ben Reilly, but it's a clone of Peter Parker... Ben Reilly was a clone of Peter Parker... Kaine is aware of Ben and his life... it's as close as one could get, so I fail to see why the die-hards won't get behind this series...

At least I'll buy it...

I don't agree with the question, but considering people (including on this very board) have practically demonized Quesada and Wacker over OMD and OMIT, this seems pretty lightweight and harmless in comparison. I think Wacker can take it (and was probably expecting it. "You can please some of the people all the time... etc"). I wouldn't call it garbage, unless he attacked Wacker on a personal level as opposed to a strictly creative criticism. And interviews that only have softball questions are pretty boring anyway. Fair game and fair question, I say.

(EDIT: Wait... were you saying the question was "garbage" or Wacker's response? I assumed you meant the question, but now I'm a bit confused. In either case, I don't think the question or the answer were garbage)

I was, am and always will be a huge fan of Ben Reilly. But I can understand their standpoint.
With Kaine healed from his clone degeneration and the things he did during the time when he had no future, when he thought he was dying, makes a strong character. Him being Scarlet Spider finding his own life, this is very much like Ben Reilly's life was back then, just with so much more to make up for.
So sure, Kaine is not Ben, but he can become like him. It's just a long journey, and I am willing to hear/read about it.

And in some way Wacker is right: Ben already found his life. And although I would still love to read more from him, with Peter being single again, there would not be much difference between those two. Kaine has a lot more baggage, which promises to be a different story than Peter's.

I liked the Point One story very much, so for now I am happy with what we got. At least the story felt like an early Ben story which is a good thing.

Well said, my friend.

I wish they would have continued with those "lost" Ben stories the did recently...

There's no reason not to do those.

We got some good untold Ben Reilly tales. That Spider-Man/X-Men #3 kicked it off with Spider-Ben and the X-folk against Mr Sinister and Carnage. Then we got some flashbacks to Ben fighting Raptor and Kaine in the 'Who was Ben Reilly?' arc. And we got a couple decent JM DeMatteis back-ups (well the one with him in Italy was good, the one with him as a janitor was ehhh so-so). They should do more. At the very least I'll bet we get some flashbacks in the Scarlet Spider series with Kaine. Speaking of which...

Kaine is back as a full-time character. Kaine was always only second to Ben in terms of characters I wanted to see return. Are we so jaded we're forgetting how awesome it is that Kaine's back in a regular capacity?

I meant Wacker's response was garbage. This is the comic book business and you're telling me that Ben's story is told after 100+ comics? Characters die and comeback all the time in the 616. That just tells me he's not a creative writer and i believe the demand for Ben is there when i see his action figure at stores today, the name "Scarlet Spider" is used by different characters (MVP Clones and now Kaine) and his images has been in Amazing Spiderman for a while now. If you wanna kill a character simply don't mention him, don't use an image of him to spark interest again.

They're trying something new and interesting. How is that a bad thing? Kaine still has untold depths to his character that could be explored. Ben Reilly was great, but he lived a hero and died a hero. What's cool about this new series is that Kaine is not a hero yet, and this series will be about him finding redemption as much as being on the road.

Also, this is important. Ben Reilly is dead. I know comic book deaths are a joke nowadays, but a thousand wrongs doesn't make a right. Death should mean something and it's just getting cheapened all the time by characters being resurrected in oh-so convenient ways. The downfall of quality in mainstream Marvel and DC comics can really be traced at least in part to the glut of cheap resurrections over the last decade and a half. Death used to be shocking and moving in comics because it meant something. Now it doesn't mean a damn thing. So good for Marvel for working in the confines of continuity without retconning yet another great death.

What pissed me off as a Reilly fan after the saga ended, was Peter ignoring his brother and not mourning him. If Reilly's legacy is given respect and he's remembered in a dignified and meaningful way by Kaine and Peter (like Gwen), then I don't see what's so bad about this. This series seems very respectful towards Reilly fans, but at the same time not looking to retread old territory.

JJJ I agree with you completely. Like you said Ben Reilly is dead, why pick up the mantle of the Scarlet Spider? Let Kaine start his own path and not take Ben's name that kinda bugs. Ben died a hero but so did Johnny Storm, Steve Rogers & [BLACKOUT]Thor[/BLACKOUT] That's change! But it doesn't last, give it 6 months there'll be a OMD or something to reset their deaths. I know there's a demand for Ben so why are they being so stubborn? Lastly your right Kaine got a burial and a tombstone and a last name. Ben got a RIP Brother.... that's weak IMO
