Comics Official Fans of Reilly Thread - Part 1

You know, if Kaine simply adopts the nme "Ben Reilly", after a while, people will simply associate Ben Reilly, the clone of Peter Parker, as the Scarlet Spider...

I think it's a pretty damn awesome scenario...

:yay:

Can someone tell me what this psychic blocking thing is that Madame Web was complaining about, and which also
powered up the Queen?

I have no idea where that thing came from and why it was built. Must have missed that issue.

You mean the Spider-Sense jammers from the Spider-Slayers story? Check out the Herc Spider-Island stories.

Edit: oh I see what you are talking about...I just assumed that was part the the Queen's powers...

Edit 2: Just reread 671, my original answer was correct.

Yeah but Kaine needs a name and a life, right? So maybe he does adopt the name in honor of Ben Reilly?!

I try to be open minded here, but as a huge Ben Reilly fan it's hard to accept anyone else in his shoes. Well, at least one thing is totally clear: Kaine is the clone.
Lets just wait and see how it turns out. I'm definetly on board.

This is really great news. I'm definitely on board with this. It's pretty much as close as your going to get to getting Ben Reilly back. Guess it explains the burning hoodie now.

You gotta admit, if anyone other than Ben was to take the name, Kaine is the most logical choice.

As for the Scarlet Spider part, where does that leave the MVP clone? Hopefully Marvel doesn't do one of the stupid routes and a) kill him off or b) just stop using him and not explain/make any reference to him at all.

Wasn't Dan Slott the one who did the plot thread with the MVP clones? I doubt that the character will be forgotten but hopefully they certainly don't kill him. I think there is a lot of opportunity there!

Actually, I'd prefer someone just sum up what they are all about.

They put up these jammers around the city to stop the mutated spider people from escaping the island. It also stopped Julia Carpenter from seeing the future/web of life.

Yost knows about Spidercide? My faith in him and this book just went up 200%. He's obviously read the clone saga (or at least a good chunk of it).

NYCC 2011: Scarlet Spider

The mysterious Scarlet Spider swings out of Spider-Island and into his own series by Chris Yost and Ryan Stegman

A brand new series featuring a familiar spider-themed hero will launch in January as writer Chris Yost and Ryan Stegman collaborate on SCARLET SPIDER.
“This isn't someone random,” Yost promises of the person behind Scarlet’s mask. “He/She/It has a connection to Spider-Man and/or Peter Parker [and] a lot of history, either directly or indirectly. And they're not necessarily looking to be a hero.”
The Scarlet Spider will find him or herself on the run across the country and winds up in Houston as the story picks up.
“The mission is: run!” says Yost. “At the beginning of the story, Scarlet Spider is trying to get out of the country due to the events of Spider Island. [Between the] police, FBI [and] Avengers, Scarlet Spider is a wanted person. So the logical thing is to get the heck out of Dodge. But as will happen, life gets in the way. Scarlet Spider's trying to stay under the radar for reasons that will be revealed. But once in Houston, trouble is afoot. Hard choices have to be made.”
Speaking of choices, Stegman made quite a few when it came to redesigning the character's costume. Fans will remember that the original consisted mostly of a red bodysuit, much like Spider-Man's, but with a blue hoodie and a much larger spider symbol.

“For the most part I wanted to go in a new direction,” Stegman explains. “I really liked the original Scarlet Spider's logo, so I kept that and re-shaped it a bit. But what I really wanted to do was emphasize the red in the costume. And I wanted to make the costume a bit scarier, because The Scarlet Spider has an edge that regular Spider-Man doesn't. So I thought that big, blood-red eyes on a black mask would really accomplish that. I hope I'm right!”
Costume aside, both creators understand the character's history and plan to give fans something new yet familiar to sink their teeth into.
“People have a love for Scarlet Spider, there's a lot of history there for sure,” Yost notes. “But with any luck, it'll all come together and make sense. Scarlet Spider has a unique perspective on the world, which in turn gives us a new perspective on Spider-Man.”
“I don't have much of a history with this character,” Stegman adds. “I got into comics late, when I was about 16 years old, and I had a window of a few years to read as much as I could before I went to college. Then I was too poor to buy comics in college. So it's been a constant effort since then to catch up on everything that I've missed. I went back and read some of the stuff, and it's helped to get me excited to work on this book, though!”
The creators' excitement stems into working with one another as well. The pair have been bouncing ideas and challenging each other artistically.
“It's been a nightmare,” Yost jokes. “[I constantly have] to work harder and up my game because his art is so amazing. Too amazing. It's going to make my scripts look weak. But the pages are phenomenal. I just got a page in today that blew me away. Especially if you like spiders. And bullets. Ryan Stegman is stealing the show, and I love it.”
“Man, it's been awesome,” Stegman echoes. “Chris actually grew up near where I grew up in Michigan. And early on he had come back to see his family and so he and I got to meet up in person. It was a lot of fun to discuss what would be coming up in SCARLET SPIDER, and he's been really open to a lot of my zany ideas. And I like to throw out a lot of crazy stuff, just to see what sticks, and he's all for it. He's also really good at coming up with stuff that will create great visuals in a comic book. He really tees me up well.”

No, it wouldn't. It would marginalize the real character of Ben Reilly and obscure his origin and place in the MU. Kaine becoming "Ben Reilly" is no different than the original plan for Ben Reilly to become "Peter Parker", which was abandoned because the creative teams at the time knew it would be a step too far.

I actually like the new Scarlet Spider costume, because it seems like it would be Kaine's darker interpretation of the identity. The previous hoodie costume, while I like it, would have been a bit too bright and goofy for him. I also think there's some 'Scarlet Letter' literary allusions, as Kaine is a bit of a cursed character. Even if his physical scars disappear, his emotional ones will remain for all the death and pain he's caused.

I'm excited for this and I think it's the best we can do, short of resurrecting Ben Reilly. I will check it out, and I'm happy Slott isn't doing this. This new writer Yost has me intrigued.

I think what is making this new Scarlet Spider series more awesome is that the artwork is going to be by Ryan Stegman. From what I've seen of him in the past he's really brought his A game to the artwork department. At the very least the book is going to be mad pretty!

And I kind of agree with JJJ's Ulcer in regards to Kaine adopting Ben Reilly's name. Just from that preview image with the burning hoodie I think that Kaine will adopt the Scarlet Spider identity but put the "Ben Reilly" portion of it behind him. He'll make the identity his own and I hope they let him be his own character.

It's not Ben Reilly but it's pretty much as close as you're going to get and whoever came up with this idea is freakin' awesome!

Finally got my hands on a Ben 1990s figure. Hard to find one and for a good price, and I paid $5 at NYCC.

No, Spidey-Ben from TAS line. Didn't even know there was one of those.

ah one of those is on ebay uk im tempted by it

yeah there was a TAS boxset (not many around IRC) which had figures of spidercide, jackal, kaine and street clothes ben (and a few others too...)

Indeed. I've been a big fan of his for a while.

I had an interesting idea for a redesign of the Scarlet Spider: How about a hybrid of the Scarlet Spider suit and Ben Reilly's Spider-Man costume?
Scarlet_Spider.jpg

For example instead of the hoodie, how about a blue version of Ben's Spider-Man costume's torso?
