Hey there everybody! BEN a while. Ha..haha.. Okay I'll stop.
Just wondering if anyone else is still picking up the Clone Saga trades. I just got number 4, and after reading through it have decided to take on a project that I've been mulling over for several years.
Maximum Clonage Redux
A complete retelling of one of the most pivotal and yet perhaps worst storylines in the entire Clone Saga.
The few of you who have been with this thread from the beginning might remember that TCS is my favorite Spiderman story ever with Ben, specifically in Scarlet getup, being my favorite character from both a design and writing standpoint.
So it always greatly dissappointed me to see that Maximum Clonage turned out as bad as it did. I could go on for hours for how bad it is- but why bother? It( and the issue directly preceeding it) is the go to story for people that hated the Clone Saga, and I can't blame them. There were serious quality issues in every way possible- the writing was awful, the artwork was all over the place, the issues had severe continuity problems, even the damn paper and printing was messed up for the 4th or 5th issue.
With that in mind, it has always been a dream of mine to go back and redo the entire thing. Put together a comic book branching the story of Spectacular 226(Part 4 of The Trial of Peter Parker) with Web 128 (the start of Exiled). It would be at least 4 issues, corresponding with the original titles, so I could literally replace them on my shelf if I wanted to. Given that the actual MC storyline included Alpha & Omega, plus that New Warriors introduction, that gives me some leeway into making it up to 7 issues long if I so choose.
When I first came up with the idea, there was no way I could execute it. My drawing skills were not up to the task. Honestly, they still aren't. Not by a long shot. But I'm going to set upon it regardless.
This storyline contains so many potentially great ideas. Questions of identity, relationships, love, regret, madness.. There's a brilliant emotional core to the work that culminates in a story that was a climax to more than a year's worth of stories. Several main characters die. Others run from the truth and others accept it and move on. Tall green monsters and clones might seem initially rediculous on paper, but there's things in the bare bones of this that I connected with a long time ago, and want to give it the story that it deserves.
This is essentially a project for my own personal enjoyment. My ultimate goal would be to have it printed up on high gloss paper and bound into issues or a hardback into something that would fit exactly into the rest. But because I know a few of you out there love Scarlet, Ben, and the Clone Saga as much as I do, I figured I'd let you know that I'm doing it. I expect it to take several years, but I'll post things of it from time to time.
Here's a quick color test so you guys can lower your expectations on the art end of things. I'll probably be using mostly watercolor pencils with a combonation of pastels for the project.. mostly because I have no experience with actual inking or coloring of a comic. However given the emotions I'll be pulling for in this story, broader less specific images could work for it. Also, I really dig working with bright pastels and watercolor, while doing up 100 pages in pencil would make me blow my brains out and no longer be fun.
