So?

Okay...then do it as a really surreal, zany thing, then. Maybe an R-rated, just on the edge of sick humor thing...with some pretty heavy graphic violence. Not going to be a big budget money-maker, but perhaps a modern cult classic down the road. The comic-based version of 'Man Bites Dog', perhaps.

Well yea I think that's what they are aiming to do with Deadpool. More of a modest budget cult hit. You can't make a ultra violent satire of the superhero genre with a 100 million dollar budgeted film. And the thing is, it wouldn't even have to be marketed as a superhero movie. It's just an insane action comedy.

I read the script when it was leaked a while ago. All the cliches that make Green Lantern a bad, predictable movie are crapped on and set on fire in Deadpool. It's got some great satire and black comedy.

Remember Blade? Iron Man? A character status in comic dom has no meaning whatsoever to movie watchers acceptance of that character. Silver Samurai might turn out to be a good Yakuza movie even if the character is a Z-lister in comics.

I dare say that Deadpool is a more movie-ready character than the Flash barring the character mythos and other backstory. Flash, whose power is running fast may look cool to a kid but might appear too "comicbooky" to the mainstream. To an adult or a movie director a grenade chucking, SMG toting teleporting costumed clown is more easily digestible like an Action movie than the conspicuously fantasy world of the Flash.
That's what I'm saying, though...how deep into the barrel do they have to keep scraping with these comic characters? I'd just like to see more original film projects coming to the forefront, instead of...Jubilee The Movie or what have you.

Deadpool is not in the bottom of the barrel. His Marvel popularity is equivalent to Booster Gold (I may have devalued Deadpool a bit here), only Booster need a good writer to write something compelling because nothing that Booster do by himself is in anyway interesting. Deadpool by himself is a cross of Spider-Man (costume, quip, wits) and Wolverine (killing approach, self healing). One of the best parts of X-Men Origins is Ryan Reynolds brandishing dual katana swiping off bullets.

Comedic assassin who wields dual katana, dual submachine guns, lots of explosives and a teleporter device that comes across like a Nightcrawler knockoff is almost a certain win. I think Zack Snyder would love to get a character like this where action not story sells.

....

Allll-righty.

Again, I think the best approach is a moderate-budget cult-flick for core comic fans, but I'd still rather see those resources put towards more original ground-up film projects.

You'd like to see more original characters? Well really, you don't really get any more unique or original than Deadpool. There isn't really any other character like him in comics, apart from maybe Ambush Bug. The comic book movie industry needs a fresh take on the genre.

No, I said I'd like to see more original ideas for films...as in, not based on comics or other things. I think the movie industry needs a fresh new break from comic-movies.

The movie rights is with Fox, not Disney/Marvel. Ground up film projects is out of the question because Fox need to launch Deadpool movie or the rights will be back with Disney forever.

I'm sure Fox will set aside an appropriate set of budget (IMO, $100 million max) and Reynolds can channel the love to his favorite Marvel Canadian superhero better.

I agree with Kal, Hollywood really does need to come up with some fresh ideas. There is a remake of Footloose coming out. Footloose!

They should combine it with Deadpool....Deadloose....Footpool.....

"...ev'ry-body cut, ev'ry-body cut...<slash>....."

People really really really really really really really really need to stop being surprised about Hollywood moving on with making remakes of movies. All I want from Hollywood is good movies, I don't care if they are in a form of a remake or not.

^I do. Particularly when they are remakes of mediocre movies in the first place. The only thing good about Footloose was the song, and even that is blech. And guess what? What I heard of the new version of the song in the trailer sucks.

I'm open to the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I thing the American version of the Grudge is inferior to Ju-on. And I actually like the new Karate Kid better than the original.

But Footloose? Red Dawn? Seriously?

I'm also tired of this notion that seems to be that the idea of a remake is horrible just because it's a...remake. It's stupid and doesn't make sense! When people hear about a remake, and if they say something about it they act like "A remake? Oh no, not again!" The truth is that remakes should be criticized only if they turn out to be lousy movies, LOUSY MOVIES.

I agree. However, there are a few movies I'm fundamentally opposed to being remade, simply because the originals were so good the odds of the remake being better, or even as good, are very low.

Like JAWS. For the love of pete, don't try and remake JAWS. It's a friggin classic. Or Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, etc. Movies like that should never be remade.

I wouldn't mind if they remade the Star Wars prequels with a writer/filmmaker who was actually good and didn't have to answer to Lucas. But that won't happen as long as he owns it. :O

I wouldn't mind if people stopped hating on George Lucas because he made a few bad movies:oldrazz:

Yes, like A New Hope, which is far from a bad movie:cwink:
Star Wars was fine, it's those prequels that were horrible. He should have had someone else writing and directing them that didn't have to just say yes to him.

Lucas has always been a good visionary, but his skills as an actual filmmaker expired long ago in a mansion far, far away.

And I take it you've never watched the Clone Wars. Not surprising.
I have watched several of them...some were okay, but overall not that interesting. Sorry that you guessed wrong. :O

hehe, well, I'm not gonna aruge anyways. I'll just say I disagree about {2 out 3}prequels.:yay:

Anyways, has there been any news on a release date for the GL DVD?

Lucas should just stick with what he does best...pushing the technology and raking in the money....and leave the actual creative/filmmaking stuff up to those who can actually do it well.

You're right, I mean some remakes don't turn out to be better than the originals that they are based on.

IIRC, Green Lantern is suppose to be out on dvd and blu-ray in October. I swear that I read that.

I think he comes up with some good ideas, but he has a hard time getting those ideas across on screen.
