The movie's success made the brand popular and got it the sequel. The brand's popularity (as made by the first film) got the sequel its money, but the sequel was a much lesser film than the first. The brand didn't really do anything by itself.

The first movie made it a 'household name' in terms of movie franchises. Before that, it was a toy and cartoon from the 80's, for those who even remembered. Bay at least deserves some credit for that. Sure, there was nothing else out there like it at the time, but he's the one who ultimately presented it as a cinematic piece, and his action-movie sensibilities (along with the groundbreaking effects work) are what gave it its appeal. The 'brand' itself isn't what sold it.

A household name is a houshold name, and Transformers was a household name before there was a film. I don't think you can get away with seperating it as a household name for film and then a household name for toys and toons. People still remember that brand because it still sells as a toy and a cartoon series today. This is a weak argument if it is any at all.

This is not true. Transformers (if that is what you are talking about) has been a successful entertainment franchise for that past 26 years. It started out as a toy line and then a cartoon series, comicbooks, video games, and has just recently extended over into film. It did not get magically popular within the last 4 years.

You're talking about its appeal to its core fans. The core fans aren't enough to have made the movie the money that it made. It had to be packaged in a film that would have popular appeal. Superman has a much longer and deeper history of cartoons/toys/comics...it has the biggest brand of them all...and yet that didn't help SR beat Transformers, or a slew of other character/toy/comic based movies with lesser 'pedigree'. POTC was...a 50-yr-old ride at Disneyland. Did the brand make it a successful movie franchise?

It's not magic...it's movies.

Are you reaching for credibility again? By trying to discredit Michael Bay? Fascinating.

Michael Bay needs to be discredited?

I mean, I thought he was already kind of discredited, by himself.

There definitely was already a brand for the first transformers movie, even people that never saw any of the cartoons, or owned any of the toys, knew what they were, and generally reacted to news of the movie along the lines of: "What? They're making a Transformers movie? Hm, that'll be something!"

well said.

If we were to do a second film, I know where that's going," he said. Hal will still be his good, old heroic self in the second outing. "But a third, I have no idea. That would be very exciting... to hand it over to one of the other [Green Lanterns], Guy Gardner or John Stewart or something.
I think that would be cool. Especially if they do an adaptation of Emerald Twilight.

But yea, would Geoff Johns be happy about that? :D

He's the butt of a lot of jokes, but he has his positives too.

Oh, it's not like no-one ever heard of them before. But again....it wouldn't have been enough to still make it a popular movie series if a lot of people didn't like the movie. As I mentioned, Superman has the biggest brand name of them all, but that couldn't help it survive past Superman Returns without rebooting....because the movie was so underwhelming. You have to give credit to the movies for presenting these things as a cinematic spectacle well enough to attract both core fans and non-fans alike. Otherwise, you could just project a picture of the brand on the screen and expect the same results. It's not like anybody could have made any Transformers movie with the same results, either. There's more to it than that. ;)

Then maybe Bruce Wayne can kill all his friends and start shooting guns. Then Superman can kill his parents or maybe Lois. That would be real neat.

We don't need any of that Marz ******** in these movies.

Yea... those examples are nothing like Emerald Twilight. Hal didn't go evil, what he was doing was for a noble cause. I thought it was good to show that even powerful superheroes can get what amounts to PTSD. He just witnessed his entire home town and everyone living there get vapourized. It'd been cliche and a bit silly if he was just like "Oh well, I'm a superhero so i have to be a stereotypical superhero".

The story itself in the comics wasn't that well developed. But the concept was good and bold. Like what Mark Waid is doing with Irredeemable.

Are you serious? He murdered Kilowog and left the Lost Lanterns in space to die. What part of "EVIL" don't you understand.

He turned EVIL. And no amount of this new ambiguous Joss Whedon quasi evil **** will change that.

Marz ruined Hal Jordan and none of his crap needs to be in these movies.

I don't think he ruined him though. He made him interesting and something other than a cookie cutter cliche of a superhero.

And he wasn't happy about what he did. He intended to reverse everything once he had enough power.

You still don't get it, do you? Even if he used the Battery to "make everything better". The deeds he committed in the process of gaining control of the Battery were the acts that turned him evil.

And why didn't he make everything better when he took the Power of the Battery? Oh yeah...

CAUSE HE WAS EVIL!

:hal: :hal: :hal:

Maybe they can introduce Kyle, and have Kyle go SHOCKINGLY bat-**** psychotic and on a SHOCKING killing spree after his girlfriend is SHOCKINGLY stuffed in a fridge. If his fans think that’s so forward thinking and interesting, explore it with Kyle.

Like I said, i prefer the concept of that story to the actual way it was written in the books. The whole idea of this powerful superhero who has the most powerful weapon in the universe going through a traumatic event and reacting in a very human way is a great story.

I think an adaptation of that story could be very compelling and tragic. Not to mention unique and original for these super hero movies that are dime a dozen these days.

I'm not a fan of Kyle Reyner... I just know a bold, unique concept when I see it.

I thought Emerald Twilight was a great story. It was a great way to introduce Kyle Rayner.
And like Morning Star said it showed that even powerful superheroes can lose it all and will do anything to try to get it back. It showed that Hal is not your typical hero

If you want to see a hero fall from grace then make one up and crap all over his legacy. As for the Green Lantern, leave him alone.

You're right. It showed him as a bat **** crazy villain who was evil as Hell. I like Hal Jordan, THE HERO.

What legacy though? What was Hal Jordan other than some cliche cookie cutter superhero before that?

And in the end he saved everyone. It's like the story of Darth Vader more than anything else. There is a tragic story there.

It didn't last, He died as a hero saving the planet, and they did bring him back, so I don't see it being crap on his legacy. Hal is getting the respect he had before even from the Lost Lanterns

Have you read a comic book before Emerald Twilight? He had 25 years of adventures and heroics. Just as complex as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. I spent my childhood reading about his HEROIC adventures. His Green Arrow team up mag was a Classic. His Legacy was enough to make him one of the biggest heroes in pop culture history. Seems good enough for me. But I guess you would have to be old enough to have actually lived through some of those years to appreciate it.

He saved the Universe alright. By SACRIFICING himself. No more Hal Jordan. I don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater. I want more Green Lantern stories.

And not some Spider-man clone, Teen Titan wannabe.
