Official Silent Hill Discussion **

PT could show up as a prologue. Or at least as a playable feature on the game.

I wouldn't mind if the gameplay combined short elements of first person. It would satisfy those that are fans of PT's horror. Kojima will know how popular it was received and since the game is apparently released in 2016, they may incorporate PT's style.
But I'm not expectant of it.

Yeah...I'm starting firmly believe the PT was just a mysterious reveal. It'll have little to no resemblance to the final game. The game was deliberately designed to be less Silent Hill than they could make, while throwing in subtle references. The FPV was designed to hide Norman Reedus.
I think the cryptic messages of multiple personalities and the murdered family will have some bearing to the storyline, however.

A lot of people are speculating that the PT trailer came before the game itself, hence why the horror feels so different. I'm confident this is the case, since there is no sign of Norman Reedus, and it seems to be a bit different in terms of scares versus the demo itself.

It felt too Silent Hill-ish :hehe:
I think it demonstrated either too much of what they intend, or just a change of heart in design, hence the final one being created for its purpose. The final trailer was about revealing Reedus as the protagonist and to make it as mysterious as possible. No showing of how anything will really play out.
And that other demo goes against what they really wanted to show to the public.

I know, right? this teaser was better than most new games haha. It was better than outlast.
PT is not better than Outlast. The minute I figured out nothing could actually harm the player , PT went from horrifying to just mildly creepy. Outlast might not br subtle, but at least it able yto keep the tension high.

What made it terrifying was the fear of the unknown. How it was conveyed.

The FPV certainly helped, especially when Lisa comes right up to your face.
But I don't think it's needed at all to to capture intense horror.
The original Silent Hills were all intensely frightening, because it was the camera angles, the darkness and the unknown that you were venturing with.
PT made you feel invincible and that eliminates the fear of venturing forward. If you're invincible and can't die, then what are you afraid of? A monster?
No...you're afraid of what that creature can do to you if it gets its hands on you...

I think Silent Hill should follow the formula of the Siren games. Now they were genuinely terrifying. Because the gameplay was tailored for stealth. These creatures were so disturbing and so powerful, that you had to hide from them. Granted they could be killed, but it was always best to run and hide. What made the Shibito scary was their human resemblance and the distorted and disturbed humanity traits they still had left.
That's made Lisa terrifying in this demo. I found her scary over most of the creatures on the old Silent Hill games.
Kojima said if you were given weapons in PT, then you would feel empowered and secure, and that wasn't a feeling he wanted to give the player.

I think the Siren games would be a good place for influence in terms of handling the fear in gameplay

But the creature cant do anything to you hence why I feel its only mildly creepy.

I think a better influence for Silent Hill would just be..Silent Hill. I like Sirens, but I don't see a lot of need to try and crib from it, honestly. I like the games I played in the Sirens series, but I think it's trying to do different things than Silent Hil did.

Yeah. I just don't have the confidence I used to I think.
Downpour sort of left me thinking
"They're never going to get back to what it used to be"

I don't imagine the Norman Reedus character to be a guy who'll sneak around in fear anyway :hehe:
He'll have weapons and be tough. Which will be interesting because they'll HAVE to create creatures that are a serious physical and mental threat to him. Which can only be good for the player.

Saying that...Murphy was supposed to be a harden con, and what we got to challenging him were the difficult, but incredibly silly looking - Weeping Bats...
And those incredibly non-scary Screamers - bleh.

PT totally destroyed outlast to me. it made me want to play some more, and to know more about its story. Whereas I had more than enough of outlast and its story was never gripping.

Outlast's story is its weakest link, especially the third act, but PT fails as a horror game because like Amnesia before it, there is no penalty for death. If nothing is a threat, there is no tension. Narrative be damned.

That's sort of true.

If I used a cheat disc back in the early days of Silent Hill for infinite health, I would run right through that game with absolute breeze. I wasn't afraid.
But without invincibility, I'm scared ****less.

In horror, the thing we fear the most is death. Not the one that brings us death. We fear them, but more so the pain and death they bring. This brings fear to its highest intensity. If a character was invincible in a horror film, then what's to fear? We know he's indestructible and nothing can hurt him. A serial killer, monster, or whatever else, can't do jack to him.
And with that, it gives you a feeling of power, and that makes you feel unafraid. You're supposed to feel mortal and that brings on the fears of anxiety. You fear for yourself physically and that makes you mentally vulnerable, because you fear for your safety.
Without proper repercussions in death, what's the point? That's why I hate checkpoints in games. It eliminates the tension because you know you're just going to be back right where you start, perfectly fine.

PT is a teaser, not the game. This is like watching a movie trailer and damning the film's script because the trailer doesn't show the entire plot.

My issues were directed at PT supposedly being better than Outlast. It has nothing to do with Silent Hills.

To be fair there's been more than enough movies that ruined the entire plot with trailers. :p

Did anybody watch Pewdiepie's playthrough?
He translated the gibberish voice on the radio because it was Swedish...Probably they made it that because they know how popular his channel is and views :hehe:

"Become one of us"
"Soon the gates to the dimension will open" :wow:

I don't really like Pewdiepie much, I prefer Markiplier. :p I might watch it though.

I love Pewds! He's a big softie :p
I much prefer his old videos. Now he's gotten too big and plays for the bigger crowd.
I love Mark's playthrough though. He actually came across Lisa, unlike Pewds, which was disappointing.

I tried watching one of his videos once. Definitely not my style.

I liked his Walking Dead playthroughs, especially. Didn't agree with all his choices, mind :hmm

I tried the 'be nice and keep everyone happy' approach and everyone still died! I mean WTF?

:p

I find in games with choices I still try to be a nice guy because being a raging bastard hurts my heart. :(

Unless I really go all the way and be a total psycho then it's usually hilarious.
