Really great card, just like Brock before him.. that was the performance of a champion. The punches Chael caught him with in the first round on feet & ground took Anderson a few rounds to shake off.. the more the fight went on the less Chael looked likely of being able to finish him. The punches he threw looked laboured & didn't look like they troubled Silva.. Silva's elbows from the bottom actually looked more dangerous.

Did anyone else get the impression Silva wanted to finish Sonnen by submission because of all the trash he talked about his Ju-Jitsu? Now this might just be me, but heres how good I think Silva is; I think he wanted Chael to take the fight to the ground.. My reason for this is simple, how often do you see an elite striker like Silva & a BJJ black belt, have a guy sitting in their guard... literally sitting. Chael's arse was resting on his own legs while Silva kept control of a wrist. Chael wasn't putting any sort of pressure in terms of grappling control onto Silva, if he'd wanted to standup he'd have just kicked him away or exploded out. Instead Silva seemed content to keep control of his stronger hand & avoid any damage.. which he did do successfully for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & briefly the 5th.. All the while Chael was getting sloppy with his attacks & grappling because he thought Silva had no answer to it. He then slapped on a 1 triangle choke followed by what looked like a modified armbar & ended it instantly.. Chael definatly tapped, definatly.

It could be that.. OR it could be what I noted to a few friends I was watching the fight with, that Silva looked hurt/not himself from the moment the fight started.. now I might be mistaken but didn't he say something about his ribs at the end? Hense why Chael perhaps had an easier time taking him down than he ordinarily would have..

Meh, great fight anyway.. atleast Chael backed up his trash talk & delivered by pushing Silva very close to his first defeat in the UFC.

Matt Hughes had a stunning performance, could be on his way back up to a WW title shot.

Jon Fitch/Thaigo Alves was the most disappointing fight of the night. Alves didn't look in shape & Fitch looked like the same fighter that lost to GSP previously.. he hasn't evolved at all. What frustrates me with guys like Fitch is they have great grappling, but he finds it hard to punish & do damage to guys that hes got control over.. rather than trying to dish out some punishment his primary concern is to avoid them getting up or wriggling out of a position.. its effective & I would rank Fitch as the best welterweight in the world, right behind GSP.. but it just seems so defensive. He needs to go train with Lesnar for a training camp, or Ortiz. They'd both teach the type of tools he'll require if he is ever gonna beat GSP..

Dos Santos vs Roy 'Fat Chop' Nelson was a great fight, Dos Santo's hit him with some pretty vicious punches & that uppercut he regularly throws is outstanding.. that being said, I don't think Dos Santos will beat either Brock Lesnar or Cain Velasquez, whichever one he ends up fighting.

Chael never stood a chance once Seagal got involved in Silva's training. However I am suprised at how well he did. I was rooting for him, unfortunately he simply didn't have enough power behind his punches to do any damage to Silva on the ground. With the amount of punches he landed Silva should have been a bloody pulp.

Ugh...I'm tired of all of these ******** biased fans...They are the worst ones..

A tap out is a tap out, plain and simple.

B: Anderson did say he'd injured his ribs and the doctor had told him not to fight. While I find that convenient, as well as his comments at the post-fight press conference about his grandmother dying and his being focused on that, I don't want to call him a liar. He was holding his ribs at the end of the first round.

Also, he intimated at the post-fight press conference that he had wanted to end the fight with a submission to honor the Nogueira brothers, possibly stemming from Chael's beautiful comments about them. And his other comments about BJJ.

zanos: Yeah. While Chael's punches aren't as week as Shields' pillow-hands, with the amount of shots he landed, Anderson should have been bleeding. That said, we really have no measure of basis, do we? Anderson's not been hit enough to bleed. Some guys are easy bleeders - Chael, Forrest - and some guys have skin made out of tough leather.

I mean, he did look pretty banged-up by the time of the press conference, when all those hits had had a time to settle in.

People have problems facing reality. It happens here in this thread, too.

I am really hyped about Handy v Toney now! Can't wait.
What a ****ty ****ing disappointing loss.
This was honestly the best thing that could happen. I don't like Chael. If Silva had just kicked his ass from the start & finished him early, it wouldn't hurt Chael as much. But this loss was what we call a heartbreaker. To be so close , yet so far away hurts like a mutha****a. It's like losing a basketball championship in game 7 by 1point. Awesome finish!!!!! Don't you EVER diss Nog Bros. Jujitsu mutha****a!
It takes a lot more effort to actually BEAT a man down.
It's wasted effort if you can't finish an opponent that then finds a way to finish you. Think of it as quality over quantity. Silva's minute or so of effort>>>>Sonnen's 4&1/2 rounds of effort. Chael had plenty of time and he couldn't finish it. Hell, he ain't finished anybody since 2007. Chael has a tough time w/triangles. Babalu, Forrest, Maia and now the greatest UFC middleweight EVER have all got him outta there w/it. He should put more effort into getting outta them.
Bleh. Like I said I'm only a casual viewer, but goddamn I hate fights that end like this. If I had my way submissions would be barred from this entire sport. :o
:) Glad you'll never get your way. I honestly am not a fan of decisions. That's all Chael's about recently. Most of his Ws come from the judges.

Ditto. WTF happened w/Spike showing them like they were doing a while ago?! They should do it every time. Probably gonna wind up on UFC Unleashed.

At least they showed the Struve fight..

I found some of the prelim fights on mma-core

Phil Davis is tearing through the Light Heavyweight ranks right now...

I hope the next fighter they put him against will really test him because I think he's ready for the big dogs...Stephan Bonnar maybe?

<Insert "olol Phil Davis can't finish ppl he sux worse den Chael Sonnen!" comment here.>

I wanted Silva to win, but I still think the end was ****** since it was hard to tell whether it was a tap or not. I'm glad he won, I just hate that it had to end like it did.

I honestly am not a fan of decisions.

I hate decisions because it's obvious the fighters aren't trying to finish the fight, or just lay and pray. The Rampage/Evans fight comes to mind. Those just piss me off. However, if it's a good fight and one guy just won't go down, like the Nelson/Dos Santos fight, then I don't mind.

All around great fights, too much for me to post about right now but excellent card. For as much as I wanted Chael to get his face punched in he took it to Anderson like he said he would and was minutes away from winning the title.

But to come back to what you said, it's hard to tell I mean really Silva only looked like he was in trouble or scrambling for the first round and maybe parts of others. I can't say for sure that was his strategy but at the same time, he never tried to submit Sonnen earlier in the fight...so maybe he was letting Chael wear himself out and wait for his spot but I feel if he was, he would have done it in the fourth.

It was clear that Silva was trying to end it at the beginning of the fourth and came close. So I doubt that Silva's intention was to finish him off with a submission. I don't want to take anything away from Sonnen, he took Silva down when he wanted during the fight and grounded and pounded him as he pleased.

IF, Silva's intention was to submit him though....brilliant fight.

Just caught 117. A rematch is absolutely necessary, wow.

lol@ that broken rib **** :whatever:

I haven't seen it yet, but read recaps and ESPN had some highlights....a tapout is a tapout IMO

To everyone whining about if it was a tap out or not:

Sonnen didn't whine did he? Nope, he took the loss like a man and knows he tapped. Just like he said at the end of the day he lost, period. He came in second place which is only silver and that's not what he wanted. For all the **** he talked (and mostly backed up - minus the W) he didn't complain about it. He knows he tapped and lost.

I. F**kin'. HATE. Submissions.

Silva got his ass whooped for 20 goddamn minutes and it takes a few seconds for him to clinch the entire fight. :down :cmad:

Then someone should be a better all around fighter to not get submitted. I guess you hate Ali taking punches all fight long letting foreman just beat on him to get gassed and Ali to see his opportunity and knock him out.

No offense meant Crook. Just don't agree.

I'm only putting in my opinion as a mere casual MMA viewer, but the mere principle of having the ability to decide a fight on a submission is so off-base to me. This bout was a perfect example. Chael FOUGHT for every single second of those rounds. Silva was practically shielding himself 90% of the time. Yet he gets a good opening and can end the fight on a tapout. How much fighting did Silva actually do here? I mean honestly...

I can fully acknowledge that submissions are an artform and do require skill, but to me it's still not fighting. Anyone trained can pull that off. It takes a lot more effort to actually BEAT a man down.

Bleh. Like I said I'm only a casual viewer, but goddamn I hate fights that end like this. If I had my way submissions would be barred from this entire sport. :o

So you mean....boxing???? :D

On another note. Not sure if anyone has caught this or not, but ex UFC fighter Roger Huerta was caught up in some drama over this past week. Apparently he was a night club in Texas when he kicked some dudes ass, after Roger saw the guy literally lay some girl out with a fist to what looks like the back of her head.

imho, dude got what he ****ing deserved.

I got something you guys are gonna laugh at.

Apparently big country is gonna fight dadadadaaaa, Shane carwin!
Well that sucks for big country.

Anderson is gonna fight vitor belfort supposedly next, possibly in November(got this from wiki, so idk if it's true).

Paulo thiago vs Diego sanchez is gonna happen(I only mention because I love paulo).

Brock is Gonna fight Cain, then the winner fights junior, and frank Mir vs nog 2 is gonna happen, so yeah, in the next 6 months there should be some good fights.

What's up with people complaining about Silva....talking about his bad ribs? Are people saying that he just wanted to make up an excuse or something? Or have people forgotten the dozens of fighters that injure themselves in training and are forced to pull out of fights regularly?
