OLD Green Lantern HBO Max Series Discussion Thread

Maybe they're further along in pre-production than we thought and were planning some announcements for SDCC? IDK, it's probably still late next year, so they've got some time. I just thought they were still trying to decide what the hell the series was gonna be (which GL it was gonna be about), but if they're already promoting it for next year then I would think they're at least further along in development than that now.

I saw Michael Jai White is down to play John Stewart. I think they were going for a younger Stewart though, right? I love MJW though. Would be cool to see him in the role.

I have no idea for Hal Jordan. I would say someone like James Marsden/Jim Caviezel. I know everyone wanted Chris Pine back in the day, but I just don't see that happening.

Been reading some of my GL graphic novels. Always been in my top 5 favorite characters. When the GL movie was releasing, I was so hyped for it. It fell pretty flat, aside from a few good scenes (OA training scene.) It felt like it could have been released during the first X-Men/Spider-Man movie, if that makes sense.

I'm ready for this series, though!

Poor Michael Jai White. He wants to be remembered as a superhero other than Spawn so badly.

I reckon they’ll go for someone less well known so they could put more money into the CGI. Think grant Gustin before flash

Wasn’t there a rumor that this show would focus on Sinestro/Abin Sur in the past and Jessica Cruz/Simon Baz in the present with it connecting to the GLC movie starring Hal Jordan/ John Stewart? Or was that just fan speculation?

Honestly I’d love that set up!

I've heard that rumor, and I've also heard one that it was gonna focus on Kyle Rayner. Nothing's solid yet.

I haven't heard the rumours myself but that does sound amazing. I would love it.

They still don't even have a show-runner for this yet, lol. 2021 seems optimistic at best. I think Jonathan Majors would be a great choice for John Stewart, especially since he's already worked with HBO on Lovecraft Country.

Geoff John's production website "Mad Ghost productions" has GL listed under TV Shows and has this as its artwork. Not much, but thought I would share.

I'm starting to read some older GL comics. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm currently reading GL: Mosaic (John Stewart) read a lot of the Kyle Rayner original run (got the 2 TPB reprints they put out a year or so ago.) Just ordered some Guy Gardner stuff too. Haven't really read any older Hal comics. Mainly just read Geoff John's GL. Got me into the character!

If you enjoyed Johns’ run, then I highly recommend Peter Tomasi’s Green Lantern Corps run that ran along aside it for a good while there (if you didn’t read it along with it to begin with, of course). I honestly enjoyed that just as much as the main book.

Also, I just talked about this one in the Superhero
Civil War thread, but a great standalone maxi-series starring Kyle is Tom King’s Omega Men.

I actually don't have any GLC comics, so I'll have to look into that. Omega Men has me really intrigued. I hope it has a TPB. I've had to collect the GL Mosaic story in single issue form, same with the Guy Gardner comics.

Yep, Omega Men definitely has a TPB, as that’s what I have. It’s called Omega Men: The End Is Here.

Well, I just ordered it. Can't wait to read it. Seems like Tom King has written some cool stuff. Not to get off topic, but have you read the new "Strange Adventures" comic that just came out? Man, I saw the cover art and had to get it as well. I know very little about Adam Strange aside from the dc animated short, which I really enjoyed.

Yep, I’m LOVING Strange Adventures so far. And I know very little about Adam Strange as well, haha. Tom King seems to be a controversial figure in comic-dom solely because of his Batman run, but he’s honestly one of my favorite writers in the industry, as I’ve loved everything I’ve read of his, from his Superman to Mister Miracle. He’s pretty brilliant, imo. Hope you enjoy Omega Men!

Well, he is Black Dynamite. And that’s better than, Spawn, Green Lantern, of any other superhero! Lol. Seriously, I like MJW but I don’t think he’s really got the acting chops for this if they want it to be a strong, serious take. BD is probably his best performance. Everything else I’ve seen him in (Spawn, Arrow, TDK) he’s kind of one-note.

Adam Strange is one character that would make for a great sci-fi series; like a throwback to old Isaac Asimov style stuff. I know they included a mediocre version of him on Krypton, but the character deserves better than that.

They’ll finally confirm that the Jack Black has been cast as Jud Plato.

Would be weird to announce an actor before announcing a show-runner

Who do you guys think would make a good showrunner for something like this? I imagine someone with a background in sci-fi is ideal, but I don't watch a lot of sci-fi so I'm not sure who might be a good fit.

I don’t know what the status of his overall deals might be, and I know he still has Outlander and that new Apple series, but I’d say Ron Moore.

Between Star Trek and BSG, his space sci-fi credentials are solid.

Id say....dun dun dun Geoff Johns would make a good co-showrunner. He's been doing a great job on the first season of Stargirl and he definitely understands the hell out of GL.

I’d rather avoid spreading him too thin. He’s done well with Stargirl, and I’d hate for there to be a sophomore slump bc he’d be holding the same position on GL. Not to mention that he’s still got comics in play.
