I thought I'd post this query since most of us are Chris reeve fans.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the Superman Returns film and how would you rate the Superman The Movie?

Also, did you like SR as much as you expected, more than you expected or not as much.

My rating for SR is 5 My rating for STM is 9 (there was a little room for imrprovement plotwise i e Otis.)

I expected to like SR better than I did. If you took out all the nostalgic references to Chris' movies, it really only was an average film.

What are your expectations for a sequel of SR?

Superman the Movie remains to this day the best superhero movie. It's simply a wonderful film, a genuine classic. It's a 10/10.

Superman Returns is a great film but doesn't have the magic. 8/10

STM 10/10
The character of Otis was a minus point for me but Chris' portrayal and the chemistry between Lois and Supes were like 20/10 so that even things out, seriously :D

SR 7.5 or 8/10
I like Brandon, but the film was a little lacking in other places. I'm undecided on how much I enjoyed this film as there were things that I loved and other stuff that didn't sit well with me. I'm one of the few who loved the visuals (didn't mind the darker atmosphere) but the plot wasn't really solid or practical.

You don't think Otis is funny?

"I got the newspaper you wanted me to get."
"Why am I not reading it?"
"Because I haven't given it to you yet?"

The first time I saw STM I thought he was quite funny. But on repeated viewings, he got annoying.

I love the deleted scene where lex is like "Otis...did you feed the babies?" Anyways,

Superman (1978): 9.0/10
Superman Returns (2006): 6.5/10

SR 8/10
STM 9/10

Both films have flaws, and they are ones which I ignore at each viewing or it spoils it for me. I've been fast-forwarding past the lame-ass "Can you Read my Mind" sequence since I was four. Also, I have to ignore the fact that turning the world backward would destroy most of our solar system. But then again, hey, he wears underwear on the outside of his tights and he flies, so go figger. When I hear people piss and moan about the inconsistencies of logic in SR, and then praise Superman: The Movie as flawless, I wish for a device that would allow me to slap someone via the internet.

Otis is genius. My favorite line was during the sequence where Supes' breaks into Luthor's Lair.

Lex: "Otis, take the gentleman's cape."

Otis approaches Superman, who maddogs him like no tomorrow.

Otis: "I don't think he wants me to, Mr. Luthor."

I'd rate S:TM 9/10, SR 9/10. I loved the Chris Reeve/Donner film, I practically grew up watching it annually. But,it still does have some flaws that it cannot really hide. Take the transformation shot when Clark jumps out of the window....heh, yeah...he's still wearing the slacks with the cape and in the next shot...full Supes outfit...and the fact that nobody saw him do it..For Superman Returns, I loved the acting, especially from Routh and Spacey, and I loved the plot. The only thing that disappointed me was how much they cut out. The Krypton sequence would've have been the perfect beginning for that movie...although, in terms of how much Brian used of Richard's story structure, it would've seemed identical to S:TM to go (Krypton-Smallville-Metropolis)

Superman (1978) 10/10

Superman Returns (2006) 9/10

Superman: The Movie (1978) 8/10

Not a perfect movie. But the film was helped out tremendously by it's star's performances. Especially Reeve. Donner's direction was nothing short of superb as well. Didnt really care for the real estate Lex. But this was 1978, so I can get past it. And Otis was nothing short of hilarious.

Superman Returns (2006) 4/10

Basically, I see SR as being essentially a love letter to Richard Donner. A bit too influenced by his vision, as well as being largely inferior to Superman: The Movie despite having a similar structure in the story. Routh failed to impress me for numerous reasons. And I was left wondering exactly what it was that Richard and Clark found so enchanting about Lois. Spacey's Lex was half assed attempt as mixing Hackman's Lex with the Post-Crisis version but it just didnt work. Ultimately, a huge disappointment. :o

Superman: The Movie is still the best live action Superman movie to date, IMHO. No doubt about it.

STM 3/10

SR 0/10

STM was a nice attempt to bring the Man of Steel to the big screen. It was the first superhero movie I saw and it brought me here - but I really don't like the pre-crisis concept anymore. I'm more of a post-crisis fan and moreso of a human version of Superman (like "Lois & Clark"). 3 points for the nostalgic feeling.

SR is just a terrible retelling of that old story. I also don't like the actors (except Spacey). 0 pionts. Not interested to ever watch it again.

What are your expectations for a sequel of SR?
I hope there won't be one. It's time to show a Clark/Superman how he is portrayed today in the comics and other media ("Smallville" - TAS - JLU) mixed with a great story that makes sense and is entertaining.

I would rate Superman The Movie 10/10.
I would rate Superman Returns 10/10.

At first I thought I wouldn't like Superman Returns at all. First, I hated the outfit. A wine color cape for Superman is not right and it still itsn't right in my view. The blue is darker too. It reminds me of the bad Superman in Superman III. Next, I didn't like the story at first. Ok, so he returns after 5 years to find out the world he use to know has changed alot. Lois has moved on and Lex is back to plot a new plan. Then I saw the teaser and was thinking that there is hope in the movie after all. Then I saw the International Trailer and thought that it mgith be a good movie after all. I was also thinking even if it was a bad movie that the only reason why it would be a good movie is because it is the first Superman movie since Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. Then more and more I begin to see of it got me at a point that it might be a really good movie. Of course, it won't be better than Superman: The Movie but it would rank up there with it. So then it came out on Wednesday and that Sunday I decided to go and see it. I had to give Brandon Routh a chance and I did. I walk away that he did a great job as Superman. Kate Bosworth did a great job as Lois Lane. Kevin Spacey did a great job a Lex Luthor. He even added a bit of Gene Hackman's Lex into his Lex. Which I like that. I saw Noel Neill and Jack Larson in the movie and thinking that might be that last time we see them on the big screen because they are old and thought that this might be the last time to be part of Superman or anything to do with Superman on the big screen. That was great to see them in that movie. I like it and it was a great movie. I can't wait for the sequel.:woot:

love both, no rating needed

I call it a draw. SR too me is a lot more interesting too watch (visuals don't hurt either) but, it lacked having the origin elements I really wanted.

The original is a bit cheesy and dated, but I'll still give it the highest rating, 10/10.

Superman Returns is either an 8 or 9/10. Can't really decide which. It's a great movie, but lacking in some key areas.

superman:the movie 10/10 - An Epic masterpiece

superman returns 8/10 - all that was missing was Return To Krypton sequence & Superman in a super battle against a super villian .

So because Superman the Movie is not based on the post-crisis comics - which didn't even exist when it was made - you overlook Reeve's wonderful performance, superb direction from Donner, mesmerising Brando, ground-breaking special effects, an almost perfect script, and some of the finest musical scoring and cinematography in any movie?

I have to laugh. Logic sometimes doesnt enter into people's opinions, does it??

Anyway I agree with your synopsis. Love Reeve best of any superman/superhero performance. (Even if you dont like his clumsy Clark) It answers the question why no one notices he looks like Superman. They only see the clutz and NOT the facial features.

And as for the score---for years I played that soundtrack--even had to buy a second. isnt it a shame that it isnt out on cd?? I used the music from the dvd special features to make a cd.
(Havent been around much because my borken foot has been causing problems. But Im still counting the days til Donner cut is released.)

Superman: The Movie is my all time favorite movie. So it gets a 9. (Docking a point for spinning the world backwards...)

I did really like Superman Returns...but I'm going to have to give it a 6. I wanted to like it more, and I see it's potential, but I have to take points for the following:

Lex Luthor. His goal was exactly the same as it was in 1978 albeit on a grander scale. And his plan was flat out insane.

Way too much was cut out. And from what it looks like, the story may have really suffered.

And there was no relationship between Lois & Clark. None. I expect a little more chemistry between them in this day and age.

And the backstory was non-exsistant. This is supposed to be a sequel to Superman II, but if that's the case then either A) Lois should know that Clark is Superman, or B) She should have no idea how her child has powers. Remembering sleeping with Superman, but forgetting the secret identity. In terms of story, you can't have it both ways.

Superman: The Movie owns SR in every way. And Singer has proven that he's no Richard Donnor.
