I have all the above. I'm very healthy when it comes to eating.

A friend of mine is a vegetarian because he was raised that way. He'll eat something like chicken when he goes out to eat and there's no vegetarian option, but it's been a year or two since he had to do that. He's Hindu, and as I understand it, vegetarianism isn't that uncommon in the Hindu faith (though not a requirement).

Yeah. Sometimes, it's just religion and raising. I know a few people who don't eat meat, because their parents imparted that philosophy to them when very young. It's not like they're jerks, but it does making go out to eat with them a lot harder when all you want is a greasy cheeseburger.

Oddly enough, my vegetarian friend was the one last night who said he wanted to go to In & Out Burger. Their fries are kickin', and he usually orders a grilled cheese sandwich with all of the usual burger trappings (sauce, lettuce, etc).

That grilled cheese sounds good. I'm by no means a vegetarian but I don't eat a lot of red meat and that sounds really good.

I love veggies, fruit, dairy, and meat, yet I can't stand bread. I don't see how people need to eat a roll or a slice with their meal. I'll eat bread only in Burritos and Hamburgers, but by itself, no way. It just makes you fat and gives you diabetes.

When I was growing up it was 4 food groups, Fruits & vegetables were grouped together. I don't know what possessed them to split them into two separate food categories.

When I was a kid, they taught us about the Food Pyramid. It had 6 different groups to it: Grain, Fruit, Vegetable, Meat, Dairy, and Fat.

Ehhh fair enough. But I don't understand morality reasons in most cases. I mean, what is the purpose of a chicken if it's not to be eaten or it's eggs are not to eaten? What's the purpose of a cow if it's not be eaten.

Why do Lions hunt Zebra? It's just nature.

But yea fair enough everyone is different.

I think to them, it's more of a, "We don't have to kill them to survive any longer, so why do we?" Which I guess I understand. But meat has been a primary staple of a human's diet for a long time, and I myself have no intention to change that. lol

And to the purpose thing, they'd probably say, "A purpose of a chicken is like a human, to live."

A purpose of a chicken is also to eat what it's biologically required to eat, just as a human is.

The amount of hypocrisy in the "I don't eat animals because we're equals" line of reasoning is so astounding, that it's difficult for me to be polite about it.

If humans are equal to other animals (which I agree with) then that implies that all animals are equal to each other, AND if some of those animals EAT other animals, then saying that you won't eat an animal because we're all equal is faulty logic.

Eh, I don't find it too hypocratic. I assume they'd mean equals, as in living things. Not equals, as in what we have.

And that's sorta what I was saying up there. They probably don't really mind the animal kingdom doing what it does, because they don't have the same abilities we do. We have the ability to not depend on meat, and create "healthy" lifestyles not dependent on animals. Cheetahs don't.

By saying that you don't eat meat because all animals are equal (humans included) is basically saying that you're better than other omnivores who do eat meat but can survive on a vegetarian diet.
