I'm a person with a very negative, contradictory, and nearly bi-polar thought pattern. I've been trying to deal with this for awhile - and will be shortly (who the **** cares if I tell some people on the internet I'm getting counselling?).

I've been told by a lot of people that my seemingly negative outlook is what holds me back alot, but my mind just seems to spin in an endless circle of cause-and-effect helplessness sometimes, and I don't know how to get out of it.

Anyway, I've heard people talk about visualization, goal-setting, ect. (and I speed-read through The Secret in a bookstore while no one was watching).

I've determined that at the moment, I'm not quite ready for the whole "The thoughts you put into the world influence the world to give you what you want", "Just think 'Yes, I can!'" thing, but over the past few weeks, I have discovered something else: the power of "No".

It's mainly a matter of health for me - being a college student with little income and a crazy schedule (see, that's me making excuses), I spent alot of the past 8 months eating disgusting things like fast food and junk. This month I came back to my hometown for a visit with a flu, and because I didn't feel well, I didn't pick up any soft drinks (or whatever you call them wherever you live), and due to my sickness, didn't feel the withdrawal at all.

Suddenly, something snapped. I didn't need to be dependent on any drink, any food. I didn't need to obsessively count calories and feel guilty knowing that while I was usually still under my recommended amount, I was just eating small portions of unhealthy things.

Since being here the past 3 weeks, I have been drinking 2-4 bottles of water a day, something I have never done before, I have not gorged myself on junk food. I have begun to eat vegetables again. I can walk through a grocery store, even if it's between meals, and resist the temptation of disgusting pre-packaged crap by simply saying to myself, "No".

I am creating a major change in my life. I just thought I'd share it.

I want you to know that I read your thread. I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to comment on but I'm happy for you.:yay:

well you can control what you desire but not what you recieve.

Good to hear you're at least trying to turn things around. Negative thought patterns can be hard to shake. It takes a lot of willpower and a willingness to be open to many perspectives to break out of that cause-and-effect style of thinking. It takes the ability to get beyond "good or bad" with everything. And junk food alone could be contributing to your mental state.

Good work Alexia, you used the power of "no" to become awesome. Now all you have to do is use the power of "yes" to go out and do stuff. Reach for the heavens and punch god in the face. :p

6 posts in and not a single rape joke....this place is slipping.

Good, because in that case I'd have to make a castration joke .

it'd be well warranted.

good job, by the way, keep up with the happiness and good times.

NO MAN! NO MAN! NO MAN!

i guess you need to watch this movie

Good for you, Alexia. You should try exercising too, not that you physically need it. People who exercise and eat well just tend to feel better about themselves.

Tell me about it. I exercise a lot. Mostly the wrists.

Oh, but I do. Thankfully, I have a gym buddy from the college I'm taking a break from, and will be hitting the gym full-force once I get back to Toronto.

Ha. Ha.

Very good, Alexia. It is so nice to read what you are doing and feeling. No is a very valuable word and should be used more. I am so glad you have found that such a tiny word can change your life in such a positive way. You stay happy and continue to make good choices in all you do. Thank you for sharing your happiness.

Bah, don't worry about diets or that new age wishing good on yourself nonsense. You want better self esteem it's just one simple step away.... get a gun. Something nice and big and make sure to wave it around erratically while shouting nonsense. You'll notice an instant change in the people around you and there's nothing like inspiring terror in others for a quick boost in self confidence. In addition you'll be amazed how strangers will be so taken by the "new" you they will drop down to your feet and just hand you money. Pretty sweet, eh?

unless you're frantically turning it clockwise and counter-clockwise it's more your forearms that you're working out

Good that your over coming this. This day and age makes things worse for a lot of people, with everyone saying eat this, do that, to loose weight. It's so complicated for something so simple-Eat good and say no to the bad.
