They kept adjusting his powers to meet the needs of the situation. And it's like they initially started doing it so they could have these big dramatic moments without any of the repercussions. Let's kill Lois-let's watch her die. Let's have Superman feel the sting of her loss and agonize over his first failure-but we don't have to live with it. We don't want to actually take her out of the story, we just want to see her die. No, we'll say he has the power to reverse time by flying around the world and reversing its rotation, which oddly magically erases the effects of the earthquake but not the fact that it happened. Superman II-let's have this big reveal where Lois discovers that Clark is Superman. Let's have him trade his powers for a relationship and then when he gets them back, he somehow has the power to erase her memory with a kiss. We don't want Lois to walk around knowing his secret, do we? Hologram projection, telekinesis, energy projection, the cellophane shield throw-and what the hell was going on with that fight in 3? What separated good Clark from bad Supes? Did Clark have his powers or not? Were they just making this stuff up as they went along?

Yup, those were some major flaws in the originals.
I hope they don't do the same with the reboot

Ditto.
Don't adjust the hero's powers to meet the needs of the scene. Adjust the story to meet what the hero can do.

Agreed. Why even bother putting Superman in these situations if you're just going to have him pull a power out of his ass to pretty much undo it?

Agreed. If Superman was fast enough to reverse time to bring back Lois, why couldn't he just stop the other missile?

How about Superman 2 when Sups brakes the mirror off the truck that Zod is trina blow up with his Laser vision, and uses the mirror to reflect the beam back at Zod.

Then in Superman 3, the Evil Superman is sitting at the bar drinking, and uses his laser vision to melt the Mirror infront of him. Why didn't that beam bounce back at him?

A total contradiction. I hear ya with that OP.

:)

Forgot about that one. But then he also banged Webster's bimbo without hurting her but had to give up his powers to be with Lois.
But so much bad storytelling was oging on with those early films, like the whole Kryptonite thing: they needed it, but couldn't logically work it in, so let's have Lex discover it in his head. He had NO REASON to believe that Krypton exploded (He referenced Supes mentioning it in the interview, but he DIDN'T. He sure as hell didn't say it blew up in 1943 bc that would have given a clue to his age, which he refused to give Lois) he had NO REASON to believe the fragments of that planet had reached Earth, he had NO REASON to believe he knew where to find them, he had no reason to believe the fragments were radioactive and he had NO REASON to believe that radiation would affect a Kryptonian differently than it would a human. But they just wedged it in there, and then instead of unleashing it on Superman, he tells him his plan and adds, "Oh, by the way, I happened to make a device that can destroy the missiles and thwart my whole plan that I've already set in motion, but I'm not gonnna tell you where it is." And Supes just believes him? Not to mention that Lex shouldn't have known about the lead thing in the first place. Why would Lois print one of Superman's scant few limitations? Criminals can read!

All I'm going to say is, YUP.

Sooooo much wrong with the old films. Really don't get why they are so worshipped.

Reeve was fantastic. The rest of it I can't defend.

With Reeve, I think he had a fantastic natural charisma for the style that they were going for.

It's just I don't really like the style.

He had no sex appeal for me. He was cheesy and all the 'love' scenes make me cringe.

I found Margot unlikeable as Lois; that hurt the chemistry I think.

they did this very thing in the silver age books. Sometimes every week he got a new power.

It's mostly the first movie that's worshipped, and it's worshipped because it's GOOD. It might not be perfect, but it was groundbreaking when it came out. The plotholes are the same kinds you can pick out of any genre movie, so they aren't enough for some of us to get our panties in a bunch over.

Personally there's sooooo much right with the old films that I really don't get why they are so bashed.

It really depends on what era a fan wants. If they are looking for a more modern take, the Reeve films may not suffice.
