They kept adjusting his powers to meet the needs of the situation. And it's like they initially started doing it so they could have these big dramatic moments without any of the repercussions. Let's kill Lois-let's watch her die. Let's have Superman feel the sting of her loss and agonize over his first failure-but we don't have to live with it. We don't want to actually take her out of the story, we just want to see her die. No, we'll say he has the power to reverse time by flying around the world and reversing its rotation, which oddly magically erases the effects of the earthquake but not the fact that it happened. Superman II-let's have this big reveal where Lois discovers that Clark is Superman. Let's have him trade his powers for a relationship and then when he gets them back, he somehow has the power to erase her memory with a kiss. We don't want Lois to walk around knowing his secret, do we? Hologram projection, telekinesis, energy projection, the cellophane shield throw-and what the hell was going on with that fight in 3? What separated good Clark from bad Supes? Did Clark have his powers or not? Were they just making this stuff up as they went along?
