Great thread - this is what I love to see on here: intelligent arguments, lateral thinking, an enrichment and deeper probing of the X-mythology...
The X-Men's comicbook costumes were designed by Mr Fantastic (Reed Richards) so he may have had a hand in other technology.
Not to mention Magneto's metal manipulations, which would have proved very useful in 'sculpting' and crafting various designs.
In X2, isn't there supposed to be a nod somewhere that Magneto's plastic prison was developed by Tony Stark? (Iron Man)...
The involvement of Forge is a very good assumption. Also there is the comicbook character called Madison Jefferies, a master builder/mechanic who can psionically manipulate machinery.
I recommend people get the 'Marvel Encyclopaedia: X-Men' - a book including details of most X-characters, the mansion and the X-jet too. It's well-illustrated and is an absolutely superb guide to the comicbook universe.

The ISBN number of the book is 0-7851-1199-9 for anyone wanting to find it elsewhere.
