It's not really any safer. Still open to the same attacks that a Windows OS is. But, it's free and will have ongoing development which Windows 95/98/ME will not.

No I would imagine since its NOT entirely windows the same attacks may not work. Its like an OS that is an emulator. Not exactly the same but close...

SO I would imagine as a whole, it will be MORE secure than windows to begin with. Granted, applications installed on it will still have holes..

I was trying to find the exact text, but I did read on the ReactOS website that they don't consider their OS any more secure than Windows NT. They say it's more secure than Windows 9x, but still succeptible to viruses and trojans. I haven't been able to find the exact page on their site that I read that, but I'll post it here if I find it.

I understand that, but since its a REWRITE of the OS from scratch, some of the old virus techniques wont work, so simply using the "Security thru Obscurity" thought, it would be a little more secure because its not being targetted specifically.

Mmmm...maybe, but it also allows a lot of the same API and .dll calls to function in one capacity or another. I don't really buy into the "security through obscurity" mythos, anyway. Either an OS is secure, or it's not. I think M$ gets attacked so much because it's a pretty easy OS to write malicious code for because it's so full of holes, and also because M$ has such a bad reputation for being sleazy a-holes amongst the hacker and cracker communities so they get targeted as a sort of retribution, not because their OS is prominent.
