Hey everybody, I've been out of the comic-collecting loop for a while now, but since I've been lurking on these boards I'm kinda itching to SLOWLY step back into things. (Plus I have a birthday coming up so I can justify squeezing some extra reading material into my meager budget..lol)
What would everybody recommend? I'm a major hulk fan, but I don't think I'm going to dig anything about the Red Hulk or Rulk or whatever the f**k he's called. I'm also a little burned out on anything mutant-related as well, so that may not be what I'm looking for either.
I dunno..when I step into a comic shop these days it's like OVERKILL with all the choices, and I would like some advice and opionions about the current Universe.
Ready......GO!

:bh:

In terms of following comics on a day-to-day...month-to-month basis..quite a few years...maybe about a decade or so(!).
I still keep up with a few things on the internet (I found this board for example), and follow the occasional thread but overall I don't know the ins and outs of the Marvel world like I used to.
Let's see here...I guess my last major attention on the Marvel world was after the Onslaught stuff...they had the alternate universe...and then they came back..and blah..I just got burned out around then. Some of the major events that have happend since then I am aware of, but not in any great detail..(Civil War, House Of M...etc, etc).
Hope this helps for you to help ME!

Without suggesting a million different titles, I would definitely recommend picking up Annihilation, Planet Hulk and the new Thor series.

Yeah from what I had read/heard about the new Thor series, everything sounded very positive. That's VERY possible...

Planet Hulk I'm quite aware of...I've read a handful of the issues (from friends collections...mostly since they really WEREN'T Hulk fans, and I wanted to see what brought them in that direction), and will probably get the complete series book or trade publication or whatever they call those all-in-one type collections for this.

Mostly it was for other area's of the Marvel Universe that I haven't followed in quite a while. Hulk is my main guy, so I'm gonna try and keep tabs on him...but some of the other folks...not so much.

:bh:

What title other than Hulk did you follow before your exile? Narrow it down for us a bit. Cap and DD have been really good for a while.....

Okay then, just off the top of my head:

Iron Man: Director of Shield #15-28

Invincible Iron Man

You can't go wrong with Captain America.

If you get Annihilation and like it, then go with Nova from there.

Hmmm...a little bit of everything to be honest. Spidey...Uncanny X...FF...Silver Surfer..I tried to cover a pretty broad range.

I dunno..I don't think it really matters what I followed in the past...I would just like to get a jumping in point for the here-and-now. Y'know what I mean?

What's hot?.....Captain Marvel..check it out...cool
What's hot?.....Howard The Duck...check it out...cool (yes..I WOULD check this out if the general opinion was a classic in the making)
I just want to get a gauge on things..since I can't follow everything that happens.
What's new with the Surfer? How about Werewolf By Night? Does Blade have anything worth checking into?
I finally got around to watching the latest Punisher, and although a little depth-less...tons better than the first (well..second) one. So what's Mr. Castle doing these days?
Hope this helps..I'm pretty wide-open for choices..so lay it on me!

Hmmm...cool...is the Director of Shield an ongoing series as well? An Iron Man title might be nice...
and it really IS hard to go wrong with ol' Cap. But didn't he..uh..die? I might have to follow this just on that fact alone ...lol.

Director of Shield came to an end and was morphed into Invincible Iron Man.

The new exiles so far is good and just started so you could jump on board there. I would suggested Spidergirl but they just cancelled it. If your a spidey purist don't buy anthing it would only make you sad. Do you read any DC?

Awww..crap...what are they doing with Spidey?

...and yeah..I'll probably pick up some DC stuff as well. But for some reason I feel really out of touch with the Marvel side so I'll focus more on that.

:bh:

Besides..I usually followed the DC universe a bit less than Marvel, so I might be more inclined to seek out some lower-priced back issues as opposed to new, fresh-outta-the-oven current stuff.
I'll see how much $$ I feel like working with...lol..that will determine a LOT.

Do NOT ASK.
THAT bad?....I know I had a hard time getting through the clone/Ben Riley storylines in times past, but always figured he would be in good hands since his movies and general public popularity had been doing well. (This all in spite of the third movie being a little..eh..stinky...).

Daredevil has been good since Kevin Smith relaunched it in 1998. You could get it all in trades (it's quite a few, since the new series is on #120 almost), but I'd say it's worth it. Or just start now, whatever.

Captain America has been awesome since Ed Brubaker took over. I would recommend reading his entire series (its about to hit #50 now)

Thor's supposed to be good and the new series isn't too far in.

I like Thunderbolts by Warren Ellis:o

And Spidey's ok. Read the wikipedia article on One More Day, which was utterly horrible (and yes, worse than the clone saga). But the stories after that have been ok. They basically just reverted to telling the Spider-Man stories of the 70's and early 80's.

On a different trek here, I might be up a 'curveball' title as well. I was a pretty big fan of the '70's Monster-themed comics, when I was pretty young...I don't suppose there is anything out or coming out that would fill that niche is there?

I was thinking maybe Dr. Strange might work....what has he been up to lately...and even more importantly...is it worth taking a look?

*It's also possible I may need to go outside the big twofer's (DC/Marvel) for my horror/macabre fix. I'll probably only go after one book in this genre, but I outside of the big two... I have NO idea which book to get...*

Well, for horror: I would have to recommend Walking Dead. Straight ahead good storytelling with a zombie backdrop.

There is no Dr Strange ongoing currently.

Spidey is great. But if you liked the marriage, not so much. They made it such that the marriage never happened.

Alright! Thanks for the horror pick...I didn't really know what to expect from my asking about that...I was prepared to go after some back-issues. (Always nice that I wasn't such a rabid collector...that way I can always go back and dig for early stuff and not feel like I've 'seen it all') :woot:
I'll see how many more replies I get for the next day or so, and then I'll probably assess what I have and start pickin'...(no, not in a bluegrass way either).

:bh:

By the way, Walking Dead is an Image comic, not Marvel.

IDW comics makes a lot of horror comics, I think. They do that 30 Days of Night stuff. I don't really know how it is.

Ah..thanks for the tip! I still might check it out though....

The best of the best at Marvel for me right now are Thor, Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, Incredible Hercules, and Captain Britain and MI-13.
