Oxford Professor says we live in a computer.

I also think that we live in a virtual world where god is testing humans for the "real" perfect world.

what really strikes me as odd about this theory, is that a lot of people have a common sense about this that has occurred to them at one point or another . . . especially when experimenting in mind altering drugs . . . . isn't it kind of strange that when you elevate your experience beyond the consciouss level, that these themes are somewhat consistent!?

in a way, it kind of validates this theory to some extent IMO

I want to know how people can just randomly say anything they want, not back it up with evidence and then get people to do extremely stupid things like worship.

I bet what he's trying to do is start a religion and then the catch is we have to worship wires and electrons, even though the wires and electrons didn't do anything. But not until spending thousands of dollars for a membership card.

he's a scientist and a philosopher man . . . . and this is just a theory . . . here's an idea . . . why don't you actually read the paper he wrote :whatever:

sounds no more stupid than any other religion i've ever heard of.

to quote the Great Wayne Coyne:

Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize we're floating in space?
Do you realize that happiness makes you cry?
Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize, oh, oh, oh?
Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize?

I like how just 'cause he's an Oxford Professor, people listen to him.

But he's said absolutely nothing new.

The idea that maybe we're living in a computer simulation has been floating around for awhile now. Its the kind of thing you talk about on one of those long nights of philosophy talk with a friend. You don't need to be a Professor to think of this ****.

He's added nothing new. If he actually had evidence, that would be better.

I mean, its like reading "Professor says we're lving in someone elses dream!!", offers no proof, and says its his "gut feeling", and gets a pat on the back for it.

14 year olds can do better philosophy.

I've never taken anything like that, and considered the possibility that we're living in a computer or a computer simulation years and years ago. Its just one of those things you end up talking about with a friend on a late night or a question you mull over when you can't sleep.

Its nothing new, its nothing clever.

^I'm not talking about being specific to the 'simulated computer' theory though . . . all that does is provoke thought . . . it's like an analogy . . . I don't think we're a 'computer' in terms of a human's definition of such . . . that's impossible . . . but think of the universe as a computer on an EXTREMETLY larger level . . . space is like a vacuum like that of cyberspace . . . what if the vacuum that is space is caused by all of the 'information' being transferred from point to point . . . I mean, what else travels faster than information? information travels at light speed, more or less (not really sure if that's true cuz I'm not a scientist)

and here's the other thing . . . you're up real late at night, and how come these strange conversations come in to play? you're more mentally exhausted, and your mind is open to different wavelenghts, etc.

Did you even read the actual paper, KD? or just the article?

and I don't mean validation on a scientific level . . . this takes a leap of faith; much like that of religion, while trying to incorporate scientific proof . . . the only way to reach levels of consciousness, you have to be open-minded . . .

Its just a theory, DV8. There is no "higher plane of conciousness". Without proof, its just a theory. Science should not require a leap of faith.

Its fun to consider the question and its possibilities. But a waste of time to live by the theory until it is proven.

^well if somebody told Isaac Newton to just 'give up', where would we be then? I'm not trying to live me life by this theory, but it can open your mind to new possibilities . . . understanding the way things work in your environment further empowers you in said environment . . . like Neo :o

a-hem, and did you actually read his paper? you kind of side-stepped that one . . .

I'm not saying "give up", I'm saying people shouldn't be quick to pat this Professor on the back.

and what about quantum physics? it's a mostly conceptual science . . . you have to open your mind to grander things . . . it's safe to assert that we don't know anything, so in order to learn new shyt, we have to take leaps of faith in some cases in order to start bridging the gap between what we do know, and what we don't . . .

well you can pat him on his rump if you'd like . . . I know you might get into that sort of thing :o

Well thats true enough. Scientists do try to fill in the gaps. Maybe if this guy keeps at it, he can figure out a way to put it to the test, which would be neat. Point taken.

Yep & yep.

as for the theory, did any of you read the actual theory? he is not claiming that we are living in a computer, he is giving three formulas that propose that one of three things is true. that we will make it to posthumans, that we will but not care about creating ancestor simulations (ala the matrix), or three that we are in a simulation.

im not saying he is correct, but neither is he. interesting read.

So I have the count of 'Men in Black' jokes up to about 11 now....for anyone else planning to make one after this post you have my lolz in advanced....lol :o

Let Me Out Of This Fcking Hard Drive Already You Ass Holes!!!!
