I decided to search one of my favorite PS1 games ever and I came across this.

http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q2-2007/051407b.html

Okay now the first game was amazing. I have no bad words to say about it. The opening scene is still a scene I'll remember to this day. Even now I still have trouble thinking of a more disturbing video game scene.

Why a cell phone game? WHY GOD WHY? They could do SO much with a PS3 or 360 version of this game. We NEED a new PE for this generation. Skipping last generation was tolerable, but this generation is in dire need of a PE rebirth.

Could anyone possibly think they are considering remaking the first one? This cell phone game seems no more than a teaser to me.

EDIT: Oh and I just wanted to mention....just because people say Parasite Eve 3 I wonder if it actually is...I mean the GFAQ's name says The Third Birthday.

Any insight into that anyone? Sounds like possibly not really #3 but something to gain attention in Japan where cell phone games are eaten up like cookies at a fat people convention.

I dream of a new PE *sigh*

yeah i agree with you, why did they put this on a freaking cell phone. why couldn't they put this on the consules, like x-box 360 or the ps3. ive been itching for a parasite 3 game, part 1 & 2 was very good, i can't wait for the prequel, just it not being on a cell phone. oh & i awlays like no. 9 from parasite eve 2, he was crazy as hell.

I hated the news too. Japan has a sort of fetish with cell phones. You can't go anywhere without seeing someone using one. Even the 2 year olds have cell phones.

Square Enix announced at its Private Party in Shinjuku today that both Final Fantasy Agito XIII and The 3rd Birthday will be released on the PSP. The two were previously announced for release only on mobile phones. Square Enix did not provide a date for Final Fantasy Agito XIII, but pegged the not-quite-a-sequel to Parasite Eve II for a 2009 release. The 3rd Birthday is said to follow the adventures of series protagonist Aya Brea but play differently from previous Parasite Eve titles.

Parasite Eve...was that the one with the lesbian tentacle ladies?

I might get it...I'll have to wear a trenchcoat and hide myself like I'm in a porno shop, but I might get it.

With the 3rd Birthday and Final Fantasy Agito XIII arriving on the PSP, I wonder if Square will release more mobile phone games on the platform like Kingdom Hearts coded, Before Crisis, and Final Fantasy IV: The After.

It's been about ten years since the last Parasite Eve game, which followed the stunning Aya Brea and her difficult journey to protect the world from strange biological horrors. Here at this year's E3, I had the pleasure of meeting with some of the developers behind the latest Parasite Eve game, known simply as the 3rd Birthday. This PSP exclusive, which was originally planned for mobile phones, once again follows heroine Aya and features action-packed gunplay and the ability to possess different soldiers on the battlefield.

Before I get into specifics, gamers might be curious about the game's title. The developers explained that the term "3rd Birthday" refers to the third rebirth of Aya, and reflects the team's desire to open up the game to players that never played the original Parasite Eve games. This was a wise decision, as it's been a long time since Parasite Eve was a "big name" and a new generation of gamers now dominates the videogame landscape. If the game is to succeed, it needs to be compelling on its own, as opposed to a sequel that relies heavily on its predecessors.

In 3rd Birthday, New York City is assaulted by menacing creatures that rip through the military's defenses. Former police officer Aya Brea must face these intimidating opponents in order to save the city and, as is usually the case, all of humanity.

Most of the action plays out in the typical fashion, as Aya can run through the battle-laden alleys of New York City and battle the horrifying creatures with a variety of realistic weapons. However, the team has implemented the new "Overdive system" to give Aya a bit of an edge over her otherworldly opponents. The Overdive system allows Aya to jump into the bodies of other soldiers and control them -- though it should be noted that those character take on her appearance, so you'll always be playing as Aya in some sense.

As there are tons of soldiers fighting the monsters plaguing NYC, Aya has a fair number of allies on her side, and it's up to her to keep those allies safe. The developers explained that it's in the player's best interest to keep the soldiers alive, as it gives Aya more options to jump from body to body and keep the pressure on her enemies. If a soldier is killed, Aya does have a brief chance to jump from the body before the game ends.

3rd Birthday is meant to be a fast-paced challenge, and the developers -- surprisingly -- referenced Dead Space a number of times, saying that the creatures in 3rd Birthday are more difficult than Dead Space's signature Necromorphs. Fortunately, there will be different difficulty levels in place to open the game up to players of different skill levels.

The staff behind 3rd Birthday comes from teams that previously worked on HD consoles, so 3rd Birthday is an understandably good-looking game. Players can also expect the absolutely phenomenal CG cutscenes that Square-Enix is famous for. The director of 3rd Birthday noted that he is very pleased with the look of 3rd Birthday, and I was inclined to agree.

3rd Birthday's 12-15 hour campaign won't be set entirely in New York City, however. I was shown one particular boss battle which placed Aya in a swirling, twisted vortex of falling bodies and dark tendrils. Having a battle set in such a disturbing environment is certainly an effective way to build atmosphere, though I honestly had no idea what was going on. Oh well!

As I was not able to play 3rd Birthday, there's no way to tell how the game will control and if it will live up to its predecessors. Keep it locked on IGN to find out more about 3rd Birthday when the game approaches a launch date.

Square Enix Hoping to Make The 3rd Birthday into a Series
Could a console version be on the way? The development staff gives some big hints.
June 25, 2010

The 3rd Birthday was originally planned as an episodic cell phone game before Square Enix switched development to a self-contained PSP game. But PSP may just be the start for the Parasite Eve revival.

Responding to an interview with Famitsu, The 3rd Birthday development staff hinted that they hope to turn the game into a series. Producer Yoshinori Kitase (also producer of Final Fantasy XIII) said to the magazine, "We ask for your support so that this title can be the starting point for a new series."

Future entries may expand beyond portables and into full-blown console releases. Director Hajime Tabata (also director of Final Fantasy Agito XIII) said that the development team hopes to make a console entry if the PSP version is well received by fans.

Square Enix seems to be doing more than just "considering" when it comes to a console version, though. The PSP version actually has some test features that are designed for a possible console release.

One of the visual oddities you might have noticed in the 3rd Birthday artwork Square Enix has released thus far is that main character Aya Brea's clothing is tattered, like she just got out of a wrestling match with a tiger. This isn't character designer Tetsuya Nomura (yes, this game has an impressive staff list) trying to make a fashion statement (if that were the case, Aya would probably have lots of zippers). Nomura actually suggested to the development staff that if 3rd Birthday were brought to a home console, one interesting gameplay component might be to have Aya's clothes get torn up as a visual reflection of damage incurred during battle.

The staff decided to implement this system in the PSP title as a test. Aya's clothing works like equipment. From what we gather, you can equip her with different clothing. Some of the clothing is skimpier than others and will tear up more easily. For instance, if you make Aya go into battle in a sleeveless garment, the clothing will tear up faster and reveal more of Aya's skin.

This is great if seeing semi-nude PSP character models is your thing. But there are some disadvantages to having Aya reveal herself. As more of her body shows, she takes greater damage. If staying alive is your goal, you'll want to equip her with fuller, stronger clothing. It won't be as sexy, and it won't tear as quickly, but it will protect her.

The torn clothing is part of the gameplay. Really! If you've been keeping up with The 3rd Birthday, you'll have probably spotted something terribly wrong with this clothing system. One of the main components of The 3rd Birthday's gameplay a system called "Overdive." Overdive is a special power that is humanity's only hope for defeating the Twisted, strange creatures that invade Manhattan at the start of the game. Aya is the only person capable of using Overdive.

Using this skill, Aya sends out her consciousness to control the bodies of soldiers who have been placed around Manhattan. When you dive into a soldier's body, you take full control of the soldier and have access to its weapons. You're free to dive into the bodies of any soldier you see on the battle field, and can do so with no penalty or limit.

You'll need to use this system to strategically combat the Twisted, who are so powerful that they can pretty quickly take out single soldiers. One basic gameplay strategy is to have Aya dive into one soldier, draw a Twisted creature towards the soldier, then dive into a soldier behind the Twisted, allowing you to blast the creature from the back.

When you've dived into a soldier, the game swaps out the soldier's graphics with Aya, so it looks like you're controlling Aya at all times. However, this is just for convenience, said Tabata as he explained the system to Famitsu. Aya's body isn't actually there -- just her consciousness. Throughout the whole of the game, Aya's physical self remains inside C.T.I (that's Counter Twisted Intelligence) headquarters.
Which brings up the question... how exactly are her clothes being torn if she's not really on the battle field?

We're not really worried too much about this little peculiarity. In fact, we have a feeling we'll appreciate the tattered clothing if Aya's next outing should end up being on an HD console.

As suggested in the Famitsu interview, the chances of that are tied to The 3rd Birthday's success. We'll get a hint at that success when The 3rd Birthday hits Japan this Winter and the rest of the world hopefully not too far after that.

Aya Brea, pictured right, is the main character of The 3rd Birthday. She's a federal agent in New York. Once an FBI agent, she's now a part of CTI. That's Counter Twisted Investigation.

Aya is not all that skilled in combat, but because she's the only person capable of using Overdive, she's been tasked with wiping out the Twisted, strange creatures who've invaded Manhatten. Using Overdive, Aya turns herself into a spiritual existence that can board and take control of the bodies of other people. This plays a major role both in the game's story and in its battle system.

During battle, Aya uses Overdive to take over the bodies of the soldiers who have spread across Manhattan in the fight against the Twisted. Doing this gives you control of the soldier. You basically become the soldier, inheriting his life and weapons -- although it still looks like you're controlling Aya.

There's no limit to how often you can execute your Overdive move. One suggested use for Overdive is to switch off from one soldier to another, positioning everyone in order to surround enemies.

In one set of screens in the Famitsu.com story, you can see Aya, hidden behind a barrier, doing her Overdive move to take control of a soldier on a raised platform. When selecting targets for Overdive, you can see in advance the weapons you'll gain access to once you've jumped over.

When actually blasting away at enemies, you have access to a lock-on button for locking on with a single button press. You can also switch off between weapons quickly, something that will be of importance given the variety you'll find in the Twisted foes.

The game also includes systems such as "Libertation" and "Radio" which will be detailed later.

You might have noticed that some CG scenes show Aya with her clothes torn. As you incur damage, Aya's clothes tear. This allows us to see more of the character, but it also means you'll take even more damage.

Famitsu notes that The 3rd Birthday's Aya has a slightly different image from the Parasite Eve Aya. There's apparently a reason for this that will be cleared up as part of the game's story.

Look who's making a cameo appearance. Well not quite but there will be a FFXIII costume in this game. Its more tha tha though. Lightning's voice actress will be doing the voices for Aya when this costume is worn

I'm still ticked that they're wasting time and money by putting games on the PSP.... This should be a full fledged PS3 game, and yes I know it was a cellphone game at start.

This game looks like it could be one of the PSP's classics. However, I'm not sure what to make of the wonky title...
