Penny Arcade and Hothead Games Join Forces to Create Video Games Based on the Penny Arcade Characters and Universe

Bellevue, Washington (August 25, 2006) — The creators of online ultracomic Penny Arcade have joined forces with Hothead Games, an independent and experienced video game developer, to collaboratively create video games based on the Penny Arcade comic.

“We’re really excited to be working with Hothead Games on our first electronic adventure," said writer Jerry Holkins, his clawed feet resting atop a huge slab of granite. "From the moment we laid eyes on them, it was clear they had the technical and creative chops to execute our grim vision. Now that we have pooled our strengths, our dark work may truly begin." Holkins then paused to eat a rat whole.

The first game, entitled Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, will be a comic adventure game initially available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, followed by a version for next-generation consoles. The game will be available by digital download, delivered in episodic format with new installments of the adventure coming out several times a year.

Vlad Ceraldi, President of Hothead Games, says this new venture feels very comfortable for the team Hothead has assembled for the project: “All our developers are industry veterans with years of experience translating characters from other media into video games, having been involved with such hits as The Simpsons Hit & Run and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. So working with Penny Arcade to create their first game is a natural fit, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with them.” Ceraldi added, “I’ve promised this with past games, and I stand by it: if the game sucks, I’ll eat my shirt.”

A release date for the first episode of Penny Arcade Adventures is to be announced.

Its about time... Penny Arcade could make for a great game

Digital distribution! :down :down :down :down  Some of us don't have credit cards or paypal accounts.

It will be coming to next gen consoles in download and disc formats.

Hell yeah! I'm really looking forward to this. :D

Ann better be playable.

YEah could be... The caption "Im coming" seems like its Fruit ****er.... Merch needs to be in this game, along with Santa... Pitty Kirby wont be in it (along with all the other videogame characters that appear in Penny Arcade :( )

How are they going to do this without selling out and without it being a sucky game?

They won't be allowed to give their opinions on the game, and even worse, how can a game be faithful to the comic?

I feel it will be the PA license taked on to a generic genre.

It looks more like The Merch to me...

Nah, those definitely look like Fruit ****** eyes. Not that I think it's him though.

How ironic would it be if the game sucks ass?

No, he's right though. Making this game causes them to loose all credibility. I mean, what the hell would the game even be about. It's gonna turn out like Futurama, Family Guy or if they're lucky, the Simpsons. It just wont work.

Ok, something new.

So the latest PC gamer should be arriving on news stands any day now if it hasn't already. This particular issue has a very early look at our game, On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One. They actually sent one of their guys (Dan Stapleton) up to Canada to visit Hothead and get a first hand look at the game in development. Dan apparently liked what he saw because the resulting article is actually really positive.

On the other hand, the editor makes it clear in his column that he hates Penny Arcade, but not so much that he won't use us to sell his magazine.

Here is all the original unedited artwork for each of the covers. You can see I actually only drew four of them. They created a fifth by combining Gabe and Tycho. I assume they figured "why sell four copies of the same magazine to every PA fan when we can sell five!"

click on a strip to see the full version. Perfect for a desktop or printing out and hanging in your cubicle.

The Magazine also comes with a new trailer for the game. We sort of consider this one the "real" trailer. We've got the cell shading going now and you get an idea of just how much 2D animation is going to be in the game. The goal really is to make something that is essentially a playable comic strip. You tube isn't the best as far as video quality but here's the trailer. I imagine an HD version will find it's way onto Gametrailers shortly.
