Without wanting to spoil it too much, has anyone on this boad watched the film about the french serial killer known as the perfumist called PERFUME...

not only is it really good but it also has some traits expected from some superhero films or at least a character with superhuman abilities...

I watched the film and was quite surprised by these added aspects of it and for me it had enhanced the viewing of it.

anyone else come across this film?

if not, it comes highly recommended.

roeper and another critic gave it a thumbs down. so i'll stay away from it. the baby scene creeped me out.

You only go an see films if Roeper says it's good?

Perfume is alright, but if you've read the book then i doubt it will compare. The book is AMAZING. The film was just too clean.

yup. i'll jump off a bridge if he told me to.

care to use spoilers to elaborate?

i've never even heard about it, but if you say it's good i'll check it out.

Ebert exposed himself as clueless when he savaged Blue Velvet, one of the greatest films ever made.
The other guy is such a moron that even Ebert nearly has a stroke listening to him heap praises on crap and moaning about excellent films with superb supports such as, "Yeah, yeah, that part was great...yeah, so was that, yeah, that was great....but I'm not buying. I didn't like it."

sorry scream but i don't know who you are talking about and what reference it has to whatever.

i'm not a film buff, i don't know anything about the making of the film or who made it. I simply picked it blind and went in to see it.

so please elaborate.

When I saw GAH's mention of Roeper disliking the film I read "Roeper" as "Ebert and Roeper" since they're on the same show. He actually said "Roeper and some other guy".

So, he highly values the opinion of Roeper and, some other guy.

i'm not a yank, i wouldn't know the correlation.

there's no way i would be able to know that info

not really. ebert is out sick so another film critic was a subsititute host with roeper. and the two bashed the film. and it really did'nt look great anyways.

Perfume rocked big time.
I just returned from it and it's almost as good as the book.
OF course there were going to be changes but then again you always have that with adaptations.

It's ALMOST a lietral adaptation and it features some great performances by Hoffman , Rickman and especially Ben WithSaw ( that's the lead's name right  ).

And i love the way how they created the scenes with Grenouille's smell.
If you were to approach this from a SUperhero''s standpoint , you'll also realise just what kind of power smell can have ( as seen in the ending).

The one embarrassed guy is too embarrassed to stand next the dry guy.
: observant:

Your choice but critics really aren't very important. They're just famous versions of us who get paid to say their opinion.

We do it for free on here. You see a movie if you want to, personally (not guided by a review from a critic), and you are allowed to like or dislike it.

Personally I'm intrigued by Perfume, I hear it's fantastic. I watched the trailer the other night it looks freaky, but yes it is like a superhero movie, in fact, somewhat like Daredevil.

Except, his superhuman hearing vision is superhuman smell in this.

the growing up scenes are very nicely done indeed.

personally considering the whole art is done in a medium that doesn't allow us to feel the sensation the film is about, i believe through colour and art and a good narration and direction, that one can get an essence of what's going on and while you may not be able to get the exact smells across, your mind's eye conjours up memories of these smells (whether good or bad) very well as well as substituting your own favourite smell for certain parts of the story.

Yes, but what 90% of people fail to understand is that critics know what they are talking about and are therefore the best placed to comment on a film's technical and artistic merits. And, most of the time, their job is to tell tou why a film is good or not, and not whether they liked it or not. Just about every person you meet cannot differentiate between liking a film and a film being good ("I like it, therefore it's good,"), the role of a reviewer is to tell you why.

"The critic said Spider-Man sucked but I like it, therefore he's wrong!"

You're point is true. I like Catwoman with Halle Berry but it's a badly written movie.

I still don't listen to critics. To me no point.

I'm surprised this movie has such poor overall ratings.

A lot of the criticism came from not being able to visually bring to life the extreme capacities of his sense of smell.

Cinema is visual and auditory, I think the director did quite well given that fact.

I liked how it was narrated as a fable, and how gritty and disgusting it could be, and how it this contrasted with the beauty and power of the perfume.

I'm looking forward to reading the novel, and hope it elevates the experience for me. As far as serial killer movies go, this is one of the best, and certainly the most original I remember seeing.

I also hate that the critics condemned it for taking itself seriously, I can understand this point of contention when it is aimed at a movie like 10,000 BC, which was a total joke, but lighthearted performances would have killed this movie.

Perfume is just plain awesome. I saw it with no expections..just mindblowing.
