Persona 5 : New Details Emerge on Story & Characters

Posted Dec 10, 2015

GameInformer has a new interview with Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino that reveals some brand new information about the game's characters and stories.
In it, Hashino speaks about the main cast, the issues the game will tackle, how the characters will evolve throughout, their connections to their alter-egos, whether any sort of romance may bloom and a special message to American fans waiting for the game.
Persona is known for confronting difficult topics. What different issues did you want to tackle with this cast?
Each of the characters, including the protagonist, has the mindset that – for one reason or another – they no longer have a place where they belong in society. So when they get a hold of the Isekai-Navi [note: Japanese version term] which allows them to enter another world and steal the malicious intent from others' hearts, they find new kinship and a sense of belonging in becoming these "phantom thieves," and throw themselves headlong into helping others and reforming society with their own hands. The ones that stand in their way are the adults – in other words, the traditional authority figures who dictate every aspect of these teenagers' lives. And in Persona 5, the story takes a different spin: Rather than getting drawn into a strange case, the team throws themselves into the fray. Through their actions, they draw the attention of an even greater enemy... That's how the game sets in motion.

“This summer will have the long-awaited Persona 5,”
said Atlus CEO Naoto Hiraoka. “And of course, there are several unannounced titles, and it will surely be a year of gathering for Atlus’ popular series.”

Atlus CEO Naoto Hiraoka shared some information in an interview in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine on plans his company has for this year. [Thanks, Hachima.]

“In 2015, we were able to develop existing IP on the side, such as Persona 4 Dancing and Etrian Mystery Dungeon,” said Hiraoka. “As for 2016 we’ll start out with Odin Sphere, then plan to release numerous titles.”

“This summer will have the long-awaited Persona 5,” he continued. “And of course, there are several unannounced titles, and it will surely be a year of gathering for Atlus’ popular series. While the release period is still undecided, I also hope you look forward to 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim by VanillaWare.”

Persona 5 director shares new tidbits in March 2016 issue of Persona Magazine

Published 7 hours ago. 136 comments.

A step above Persona 3 and 4's Social Links.

P5-Tidbits-P-Mag_02-23-16.jpg

Today marks the release of “Persona Magazine #2016 March,” which features a new interview with Persona series director Katsura Hashino, who shares new tidbits on Persona 5.
Get the information below.
Setting

  • The dungeon level design is vastly different from previous games. All of them incorporate different stories and can be thoroughly enjoyed.
  • By choosing the cliched theme of “phantom thieves,” Atlus hopes to surprise users and put in more ideas than can be imagined. Atlus wants to skillfully combine contemporary drama with Persona to create something that expresses the fun of entertainment.
  • The setting is Tokyo because Atlus wants to play out an unthinkable phantom thief drama in a world that we’re familiar with.
Characters (read each character’s description here)

  • Many of the characters are labeled, or look at things from a biased point of view and such, and are spending their days unhappily, feeling that it can’t be helped and don’t fit in. Breaking the status quo, rising up, and coming alive is how the introduction will develop.
  • Regarding Ryuji Sakamoto: A “let’s change the world” character who pulls along the protagonist. The hero begins his phantom thieving after getting caught up with Ryuji. He’s insistent, but kind on the inside. His personality is a good match for his voice actor, Mamoru Miyano. And his Persona, “Captain Kidd,” matches Ryuji’s setting and episode.
  • Regarding Ann Takamaki: A quarter-American character who has returned to Japan and is well liked, but doesn’t have friends and, though she stands out, is cut off and isolated from her surroundings. After becoming your friend, her bright personality makes her the lively mood maker of the group. Her Persona, “Carmen,” has a femme fatal side to her, and in an incident related to Ann, the protagonist and Ryuji will take on a fight in the other world. In this sense, Ann will have an influence on the fate of the protagonists.
  • Regarding Morgana: A character similar to Persona 4‘s Teddie that will help you navigate the other world. Having previously been involved in the phantom thief business for certain reasons, she also bears the responsibility of training the protagonists as phantom thieves. In the real world, Morgana takes on the form of an ordinary cat, and Hashino wants you to look forward to the reason why that is. Morgana’s Persona, Zorro, is her admired form. Because she’s usually small and called with a “hey, cat,” Morgana’s Persona takes on a macho form.
  • Regarding Yusuke Kitagawa: An eccentric character whose illustration may give off a different appeal. He has talent as a painter and is also an art scholarship student.
  • There will be a system similar to “Social Links.” Is communication the driving force for those who are trying to make a change? With that question in mind, Hashino says that it will be good if Persona 5 depicted human relations a step above Persona 3 and Persona 4‘s Social Links.
Persona Series

  • Atlus is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Persona series this year, and since Atlus is thinking about if it can make an announcement that will please users, while first waiting for Persona 5, Hashino says to look forward to something in that vicinity.
If you’re interested, scans of the magazine are available at Ruliweb.
Persona 5 is due out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 this summer.

Keep in mind that the names are subject to change once we get an official romanization from Atlus.

Makoto Niijima [CV: Rina Sato]

Futaba Sakura [CV: Aoi Yuki]
Persona: Necronomicon (the UFO that was in the trailer)

A young girl who is considered a programming prodigy with inhumane computing abilities. She’s the age of a first-year high school student, but on top of having difficulties in communicating with others, a certain incident has caused her to be a shut-in.

Haru Okumura [CV: Haruka Tomatsu]

A third-year high school student and daughter of the president of a big food service manufacturer. Refined but seen little of life, but unlike Sakura, Haru has watched a lot of people and has gained high communication skills.

Here are some additional details on the characters and their Persona.

Makoto Niijima [CV: Rina Sato]

  • Her Persona ability awakens due to a certain trouble.

  • Her Persona, Johanna, is the one that looks like a bike, and it doesn’t look like it’ll have any kind of transformation.

  • According to director and creative producer Katsura Hashino, while Persona 5 is both a story about Phantom Thieves and also a school setting, the first case will take place at the Shujin High School, and this is where Makoto will set her eyes on the protagonist.

  • Johanna is based on Pope Joan, who reigned as pope for a few years during the Middle Ages of Europe, according to popular legend.

Futaba Sakura [Aoi Yuki]

  • A certain incident has caused the prodigy programmer to be a shut-in, and she has not attended school ever since graduating middle school.

  • She acts normal when she’s around the protagonist, but when she’s around multiple people we might see her wearing a strange headgear to cover up her face and head.

  • In Hashino’s comment he says that he can’t go into too much detail, but the way Futaba and the protagonist meet is a little different and their circumstance is also special. She’s a character that will play a major role in the story.

  • Her Persona Necronomicon symbolizes Futaba’s unknown powers.

Haru Okumura [CV: Haruka Tomatsu]

  • She does not find value in human relations and has avoided connecting with others for this reason.

  • Haru is the daughter of a company president so it might seem like she lives in a different world, but once she gets closer to those around her, she’ll become more friendly.

  • The adults that are concerned with Haru have warped hearts on a huge scale, and you’ll meet Haru as a key character during a time when the story takes a big step.

  • Her Persona Milady is based off Milady de Winter from The Three Musketeers.

Persona 5 will release in Japan on September 15, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Persona 5’s Prologue Starts With The Protagonist Beating Up A Harasser And Getting Arrested. May 11, 2016 . 6:00am

We’ve seen Persona 5’s protagonist being interrogated and always wondered what was going on with that.

We’ve seen Persona 5’s protagonist being interrogated by the police and always wondered what was going on with that. The latest information from this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine sheds some light on the topic, plus more on the world, and game progression. [Thanks, Hokanko-Alt.]

Prologue

  • The protagonist saves a woman who was being harassed by a man, but he then gets arrested after the police sees the injuries on the offender. He is then placed on probation. In order to fight against the wait of probation, he becomes a Phantom Thief.

  • A woman named “Sae Niijima” dressed in a suit makes an appearance. Could she be Makoto’s mother?

  • The Phantom Thieves’ activities gets attention from the government and police, and we’ll see all kinds of mysterious incidents going on in the streets.

System

  • The Other World: The protagonist and company will use a mysterious app called “Isekainabi” (Other World Navi) to infiltrate into “Palace,” a world that shows the distorted mind of adults. By stealing the hidden greed “Treasure” in there, they’re able to reform the target.

  • Game Progression: Likely to take place over the course of a year as we saw in Persona 3 and Persona 4. You’ll be able to take on part-time jobs or go out and have fun. There are events such as sea bathing, school festival, school excursions and field trips.

Interview
The following are some highlights from Persona 5 Director and Creative Producer Katsura Hashino.

  • Hashino is confident that those who get to play the game will like it, but they’ll keep working on it while keeping a close eye to all the details until the deadline.

  • Persona 5 is packed with elements that will make fans feel the enjoyment of playing a Picaresque novel.

  • The idea of being a high school student during everyday life and a Persona-user during the non-everyday life will have bigger implications this time around.

  • Each Persona are made as outlaws to reflect the characteristics of Palace, and when they might even change into something completely different when they evolve.

  • The reason the Velvet Room is like a prison is one of the big mysteries of the story.

  • The twins Caroline and Justine are the prison guards of the Velvet Room who show childlike innocent and sharp attitudes towards the protagonist who must be corrected in order to get back his freedom.

  • The story has multiple layers along with tricky story developments going on in some parts, but it’s made in a way that you can immerse into the world of the game.

Persona 5 will release in Japan on September 15, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
