Peter Jackson's Mortal Engines

This was...interesting, it had some really whacky and out there concepts, which I liked, but then it was surrounded by such generic characters and a rather basic story. I did like the post apocalyptic world they created and the explanation of how it got that way. I also thought Shrike was a really good character. It had some of that Peter Jackson magic but then at other times you totally tellan inferior Director was calling the shots. Some of the acting and CGI was poor, while other times it was really good. So definitely a mixed bag, I don’t see it creating a franchise though.

6.5/10

I'll be off to see this, probably Monday or Tuesday.

A shame about its poor reception, but I'm still going to check it out once it's available on digital release - the premise sound very, very interesting and there is praise on the visuals.

Praise on the visuals, yes.
Not hearing a lot of praise for the story, though.

Yeah seems that’s the case here, don’t think the movie was marketed very well either

Yeah, the marketing has been 'sparse' (outside of cinematic based trailers) at best. No major on-line presence & no real connection made to the original novel (i.e. the author hasn't been taken on board with the advertising or input, it's been 'Jackson's' film, and I understand why, he's a major name) but it's been very low-key.

I was gonna go and see it but there's literally two ****ing showings at both of the theatres near me. Which says something.

So, not even going to make Young Adult money. Rough.

Probably released a year or 2 too late.

Another "Chosen One" narrative?

Not so much "Chosen One", but
quest/the heroine holds the secret key to disable villain's superweapon/the third act gets a bit Star Warsy with the "allied fleet" making a bombing run on the Death Star, I mean London, which is firing up a superweapon to bring down the "shield wall". There's also a "Luke, I am your father"-esque moment that's just kind of thrown in there and doesn't really amount to anything.

Seems like Peter Jackson just doesn’t have the clout he used to.

Peter jackson didn't direct this, he produced it
If he had been the director, you could have sold this as Peter jacksons Jacksons new world of fantasy.

True. But apparently, Jackson was a hands-on producer. And he, Walsh and Boyens wrote the screenplay.

It’s a shame really as it’s nit an awful movie by any means, but it under uses it’s best character and gets far too cliche at times.
