Sounds like this is all treading in dangerous territory. I understand that now she'll always be more "manageable" but it seems pretty messed up to keep someone from ever "growing up." This will all go into the "what qualifies you to get this treatment?" sort of thing.

Explain to me how they are 'damned if they don't', other than having to look after their kid like the thousands of others who have children born with disabilities?

I agree. This is a horrible misuse of medical science in my mind and truly f**ked up on the part of the parents. If they aren't capable or don't want to really take care of her than find a good, high quality care facility that will. They didn't do this out of love, they did it out of selfishness no matter how else they might paint it.

The kid is never going to get better, so with her I don't think it will matter.
I'm just surprised that a doctor would agree to do it.
I don't get how anyone would be willing to "raise" her, you'll be stuck with her forever and who will take care of her when you die?

the main thing to remember is this girl has the mind of a 3-month old baby, and from what i've read about this case will always be that way. In this case i think that the treatment seems appropriate for the situation. It not only makes it easier for the caregivers or parents to give her personal and appropriate care, but also keeps a 3 month old from having to deal with puberty. Imagine a 3-month old baby having to deal with menstral cramping. The problem lies with how this "treatment" is used, or is allowed to be used in the future, as it definitly shouldn't be used as a "fix all" to 99% of mental ******ation cases.

9 year old with mind of a 3-month old
parents used debatable medical techniques to keep child from growing, removed uterus, and used hormone treatment to keep her from reaching puberty.
is this ethical?

there's a very short rundown for you..but really you should read up on it if you're interested.

She's still a human being and doesn't deserve to be treated this way.

Well, I believe in abortion so this wouldn't have been an issue for me.

This thread should be aborted, there's already one about it.

All I can say is that I do not envy the decision the parents had to make and would not wish it on my worst enemy. I am sure what they are doing, they believe to be in the best interest of their child and in the end...that is all they can do.

Why her breasts?

I'm not a medical professor but wouldn't removing her uterus be enougth?

I think they have different motives, they see this as a perma child that will never leave them.

My sis has a similar condition, she'll be 24 in February yet her mind works like lesser than a toddler. Can't do much for herself. Been very hard because her body is of a fully developed female yet her mind is behind a Himalaya-sized speed bump.

She was in a special program in public school and since 21, we placed her in a private school with 1 on 1 training which is costing more than a year's tuition in University. It's hard but in a way, it's kept our family together and tight.

I understand exactly what the parents don't want to deal with - however I don't agree with their methods. To each their own.

Honestly, do you love her?

Honestly, I just can't comprehend the complex relationship you would have with someone that hanicapped.

I'm not even trying to be an ass hole this time.

does a 3 month old baby deserve to have to go through the pain of puberty, larger chances of bedsores and the impersonality of mechanical lifts to move her around. does a 3-month old baby, who mentally needs physical contact more than anything, deserve to grow to a size that that phsical contact has to be lessened.

I'm not saying that i would do what these parents did, i'm just looking at it from their point of view. I understand where you're comming from as well though.
