thanks guys: this one was done to try and impress french graphic artist philippe briones [hasn't really worked so far], captain america is asking him on my behalf about advice on compiling a portfolio etc. if you're really desperate to know then there is a translation if you trawl through the thread.

whassup hypesters

so this is a kind of meagre update to stop my thread vanishing...

[1] i just got back from the Angouleme Bande Dessinee Festival in France, which, as I understand it, is the biggest comic book festival in Europe. It was massive, and really exciting, and really inspiring. I finally met up with Phil Briones [French BD and sometime Marvel artist, check out his work on WHite Tiger and Namor] and he was really nice and has invited me to visit him in his studio in Dijon, an offer which I definitely intend to take up, and he also introduced me to Chris Claremont, who was really grumpy and tired but gave my girlfriend Pauline some good advice on her script writing. However, the main feedback I had from others on my own work was [a] the style was currently too "anglo-saxon" [when i asked Briones to explain this he said "like Yellow Submarine"] for me to find work in France, and too heavily photoshopped, and [c] too illustratory and not enough graphic. but i feel like i got some good criticism i can work with and i intend to be addressing all these factors...

[2] so in light of its reception at Angouleme, my samurai project which i posted a few images from above, is straight back to the drawing board. i still intend to work on it, but stylistically it needs an overhaul. it's funny cos it was my most recent stuff and the stuff i was most proud of, but it got the worst reception. in the meantime, here are some preliminary sketches for a spoof conan project i'm working on with a mate:

contd...

what are you trying to say? that it resembles a phallus? indeed, good sir, it's a conan/sword&sorcery spoof and that was most decidedly my intention!!!!

What the hell do those sell outs know.

Your work rocks.

You can make any style work or sell if you are passionate about it.

Your new stuff is aweeeeeeesome

well the emphasis is definitely on the european bande dessinees rather than the yankee comics, but if you're into BD then it's a must. angouleme is a really pretty town, too.

LOL. That's awesome. :woot:

thanks man. YOU'RE awesome.

Glad you're liking it brother. As for the crit I received at angouleme, yeah, they were a bit french and up their own arses about it, but i do think there was something to some of it and i intend to try and take it into account. i've kind of been working in a vacuum these past six months, scraping a portfolio together but i have no friends besides hypesters who are graphic artists to chat to, discuss techniques etc. so... it was good. i feel like it was a necessary first step into the fray!

Phigg are you mad????

The samurai work is great and if it doesn't fit the tastes of traditional print comics
there's always the web. IMO the Samurai would rock as a monthly web comic as is provided the story is compelling.

Don't do it like your father did find your own way.

Translation: You don't get a monthly check for a web comic like your father did (Doing whatever he did/does) but you could make a nice penny/pound/Euro (Whatever) selling ads and soliciting sponsorships for a wildly popular web property.

I feel you but I wasn't refering to the attitude of the French
see my last post (Posted before reading your last reply)

I don't believe saying someones work is too photoshoped or too Illustratorie(??) is a valid crit.

It's more of an induction or test of your will.

Your work can be done in any medium or any style.

It isn't (IMO) about anatomy, perspective, or style,
It's about the feeling your work creates in the viewer.

KAD, mate,

[1] your support is magnificent, thanks so much

[2] your ideas are very valid and thought-provoking... i may well pursue the web publishing angle, but i'm also really really broke and i need to make some money and if it could be off some kind of drawing project then that would be immense!! i've kind of been amorphous and unfocused about things so far, and that needs to change now.

[3] don't worry, i don't intend to do it like my father did it!

once again, thanks a lot mate.

here's my entry for the feb fanart contest. does anyone who knows comics better than me know if these two have ever met up in official DCU continuity?

^ LOL man. That's a great strip and would make sense. Good match-up.
