Well, now that I know you're a fellow ALIEN fanatic I'll make sure to keep you up to date when I do.
True story... When the film came out, my uncle Louis was working in Times Square and there was someone or someplace that sold the HUGE ALIEN figure, with the glow in the dark head, the multiple points of articulation and the secondary jaws which shot out from the mouth. Looking back with adult eyes it's one of the most amazing toys/tie ins ever made for a film. My uncle got them for all the boys in the family, which, I don't know why. We were all LITTLE kids, not like 10-12, but like 4-6. The film had already traumatized my little mind and then, BOOM, scariest Christmas gift ever!! Luckily my mom that same year bought me a Godzilla that was the same size as the Alien and of course, my little kid brain surmised that Godzilla would protect me at night from the Alien. I kept it in the box for YEARS. Then I got older and I wasn't as scared so of course out the box it came. He ate lots of G.I. Joes and Star Wars figures lets just say.
I finally went back to really see ALIEN when I was like 13-14 to see it with older eyes and since then it's been an all time favorite, and honestly, it's based on three things for me: 1.The direction, which is impeccable. The way that Scott created a third way, if you will, with Hollywood Sci Fi, that was neither the textured fantasy of Lucas nor the somewhat sterile vibe of Trek or Kubrick's 2001. The space trucker idea if you will, was executed so well. 2. The acting. Seriously, look at the acting in ALIEN. Harry Dean and Yaphet are an amazing team, and I think we've all met guys like that on jobs over the years. Ripley is of course a focus but we have this murderers' row of talent, Hurt, Skerrit, Holm... Such talent that sells this dark story to the hilt. 3. The use of the music. Goldsmith was a great and here, his collaboration is a sublime use of music in a horror-sci fi movie. It rises when it needs to and it's quiet when it needs to be as well.
Of course the ALIEN I had eventually got broken. Lord, how I wished I had kept it in the box.
