"Going down" is something most people typically don't mind hearing from a polite elevator attendant or in an Aerosmith song, but it's definitely not something anyone wants to hear a pilot say over the PA system during a flight. Passengers on a Tuesday Southwest Airlines flight headed from Tampa, Fla., to Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina say they heard their panicked pilot says, "We're in trouble, we're going down" over the loudspeaker, which was immediately followed by the plane nosediving. Passengers started praying and desperately trying to text loved ones, but the plane leveled out and safely made an emergency landing.
A Southwest spokeswoman said the pilot had noticed lower-than-usual cabin pressure and decided to descend earlier than usual; he mistakenly activated the cabin PA system while trying to alert the flight attendants of his decision. "I'm sure everybody went through their private moments," passenger Grace Stroud told CNN. "My moment was, 'OK, so this is how I'm going to die' and 'At least it will be quick.'" The FAA is investigating the incident. [Source] [Source]
