Pixar's Brave - In Theaters Summer 2012

please tell me he's not too high on the totem pole at pixar, his sensibilities spit in the face of everything that has made pixar great, he seems more concerned with churning out a product then telling a great story. don't get me wrong, Brave was alright, better than cars at least, but it wasn't near the level of quality that pixar has hit multiple times in the past.

He is the head of the story department, basically head of production since Lasseter is juggling back and forth from Disney to Pixar.

Well that explains why Toy Story 3 and Cars 2 were so mature in tone. :(

Does anyone know why Chapman was kicked off this film?

There are many things about the production of Brave that always seemed off.

While I didn't love Brave, I'm with Chapman in this one. The key thing that Disney took away from the Pixar design are Merida's eyes, which were so expressive. It somehow captures a look of innocence and wonderment that got lost during the Disney-Park retrofit.

There's been a huge uproar about this and honestly I don't see much of a difference

It's subtle, but noticeable. They "prettied" her up. And essentially spat in the face of the main message of the film.

Honestly, what if Merida wanted to look like that? She was fairly young in Brave, so she was in that tomboy-ish stage. It's fairly typical for tomboy girls to grow out of that stage at certain points and come out more feminine. I don't see a problem.

A lot of times they don't even leave their tomboy ways they just want to be more pretty

I don't care much for the new look either...

Well really the issue is, why make the change to begin with? The character was popular enough to merit inclusion in the princess ranks, then display her as she appeared.

There are other images in the new art style where she has her weapons.

Did they really though? Its not as if she appears all rugged and weapon wielding for the entirely film, particularly at the end when she is being a mature adult, performing her political duties as princess.

I don't think people would have minded if they had kept her in the same style as she was at the end of the movie. I think the deliberate skinning of her waist and widening of the eyes has some people annoyed. And I can see why, they definitely altered the design scheme to make her look more classically attractive.

Baby fat. Her body went through some changes.

Okay, come on now. They don't mess with the ages of any of the other princesses when they inducted them. It's pretty obvious that they deliberately changed her design to make her more classically attractive. And that is pretty low.

:lmao: I knew you'd say that. I was really only half-serious when I said that.

The reason I'm fine with it is because she was already going into this stage of her life by the end of Brave. We didn't really see that with the other princesses, so I don't expect their appearances to change much.

I knew you were being somewhat tongue and cheek, but I'm just saying I understand why people are angry. It's not blatant sexism, but it's a subtle change that reinforces a lot of the sterotypes the movie itself was working against. And it does seem kind of pathetic that Disney felt the need to "pretty her up" for no other reason then apparently because they thought it would sell better. It's almost as bad as that one exec who was interviewed after they shut down their 2D animation and said "little girls don't want to be princesses anymore. They want to be sexy."

That's just messed up.

Mulan looks like Bobby Lee in a wig...

I didn't know about that. Very messed up. I can see where you're coming from.

I can see being a bit miffed about her body shape but the whole thing with the eyes is largely just a change in overall art style. I've also heard people freaking out about her hair line....that doesn't make any sense.

I haven't heard anything about the hair line. They have talked about how they glamed up her hair and made it wavy instead of frizzy, which I did notice.

Then again, why aren't people mad about Mulan? She was dressed up as a boy 80% of the time, and yet at the Parks, she's represented strictly as a femy princess.
