Pixar's Brave - In Theaters Summer 2012

I'm frankly shocked at some people reviewing this movie. To me I catagorize Pixar films into three groups, Toy Story, Cars 1, Nemo and Incredibles, which would be the top tier, then you have tier 1B which may not have been financial successes, but they were top notch films, which I include Ratatouille, Up, Bug's Life, Wall-E. The lone film that doesn't stand up to Pixar's quality would be Cars 2, which is just like any other generic CGI animated film.

Brave not only fits in the second category, it's at the top of that category!

Brave is probably the first CGI animated film that I've seen besides Tangled to have a target audience of young girls. That's why this movie will do well. Mother's and daughters will be wanting to see this together for a long time. It's a story about relationships, and while there's magic and other things involved, it's really all about relationships.

I admire Pixar, because they take real risks in making these movies. They are more concerned about story than they are about some eye popping 3D effects, and while the 3D looks beautiful, don't expect the cheap gag gimmicks that other animation studios pull out, you just sit back and enjoy the beauty of these wide shots of a CGI rendered Scotland.

What risk exactly did they take in this movie? By Pixar standards the story is one dimensional as they come. Just coz the protagonist is female means jack ****.

I did enjoy it, but it does feel like Dreamworks has been doing more Pixar-ish stuff as of late than even Pixar is doing. Monsters vs. Aliens felt more like Pixar to me.

haven't seen the movie yet.....but a few questions for those who have seen it.

This morning when I saw a TV spot, it dawned on me that the 3 little bears are Merida's 3 brothers and the "good bear" is Merida's mom. A few posts above seemed to confirm that the mom does indeed turn into a bear. So, was I correct in guessing that the 3 bear cubs are the 3 brothers?

Also, does the witch have a crow/raven pet, and are the witch and crow/raven truly evil? I saw a clip of the witch and she seemed more comical than evil.......

Answers:

Yes, Merida's mom gets turned into a bear. Merida makes a deal with a witch and gives her a bewitched pie, which transforms her after just one bite. She thought the spell would just change her mom's mind about the marriage, but she didn't realize it would also turn her into a bear.

After helping Merida and the mother/bear escape, the boys find the rest of the pie and it eat it, not realizing it was bewitched, so they get turned into little bears too.

The premise is that they have to mend a bond that was broken in order to fix it. Merida thought that meant fixing a tapestry she tore when she fought with her mother, but it also meant mending their relationship too.

The witch wasn't really evil, she just had an odd way of granting Merida's wish. She doesn't even appear in the film again once the spell was cast, outside of leaving a message for the, in a cauldron. The raven was pretty funny, and there's a Pixar Easter egg in her wood carving shop.

cool, thanks!

Saw this film today. It was really great. Beautiful scenery and amazing music. I loved the whole feel of it. And i found the story to be wonderful and full of heart.

I wouldn't say they took a risk on this story, but I think the complaints from some bloggers that I've been reading complaining that Pixar screwed up their first lead girl character are way off base.

My only minor gripe with Merida was that she turned a little too bratty when it came to the argument with her mother. It was definitely an angsty teen moment, but she was bordering on unlikeable right there.

But I have no problem that she's a princess. I like the Disney princess movies. I grew up with those movies (the later ones, anyway). I have all the soundtracks on my ipod. I will take any of them over a Twilight movie. There was nothing wrong with Merida being a princess.

The story was a mother/daughter story and not a show-off-our-first-girl story. And the mother was a great character. She wasn't dead, like most of the mothers in these stories are, and honestly, she was far smarter and in control of everything far more than Merida's doofus of a father (who I loved, simply for his doofus-nish).

Finding Nemo was their father/son story, this was their mother/daughter story. I liked that. And that unlike Finding Nemo, it didn't have me bawling before the opening titles. :oldrazz:

I think she was unlikable in general, so in some respect they kinda did screw her up because ultimately she's not a very likable character. Nemo you actually cared about the characters, I never felt that way in this film.

I did like her. It was just that one moment that they gave her too much bratty.

I hope the hatred isn't being overblown because of one or two scenes.

I might go see this tommorow. I never saw Cars but Cars 2 was decent enough , not brilliant but still enjoyable.

It is being overblown. Real characters are not likeable 100 percent of the time. Not even nemo. She was a great lead character and very likeable

Saw this with some friends. The trailers made it seem (to me) that it'd be this big, sprawling epic, so I was surprised at how relatively "small" this movie was.

I enjoyed Merida. I don't think she was too bratty. I can't imagine what it would be like to practically be sold to a stranger in order to keep the peace, so I don't think it's fair to call her a brat. Actually, I think the character with the issue is the mother. I think they could have showed how she felt about the situation outside of her blindly following tradition (she surely couldn't have liked the idea). I think they could have shown this internal struggle when she's talking to the king, it would have made her more sympathetic, as well as made her change of heart less sudden and more organic and impactful. And the queen was gone for a whole night and day before the king realized she was missing? Really?

I think a lot of the jokes tried too hard, or not hard enough - most of them centered around people being clumsy. I enjoy slap stick as much as the next guy, but Pixars track record shows that they're better than resorting to cheap gags. Outside of a few big laughs (mostly from the king), the rest of the humor was kinda weak as well...I found myself laughing because I was supposed to, not because it made me.

The 3d was bad (and I say this as someone who enjoys the medium). It really muddied the picture and masked the gorgeous textures and details of the film. On a couple of occasions, I took the glasses off just to see the difference and was amazed at how much better it looked. I highly advise against seeing in 3d for this reason.

The bad guy bear was a let down. He really seemed shoe horned in because they needed some kind of antagonist. He was cool for the two scenes he was in, but I think more time could have been spent on his back story, which would have made the reveal and end more meaningful.

This movie had some good ideas, potentially great characters and beautiful graphics that were killed by the 3d. Its certainly not Pixars best, but also not their worst (for me, that'd be the Cars films). I WANT to adore this film, I really do, but I can't. It had the potential to be as good as the incredibles in terms of a family-centric story, but it kinda fell flat. I didn't catch who wrote the script, but I hope they get a better writer for their next film.

6/10

I have to say, the audience at my show this morning totally roared for that Monster University preview. Have a feeling that one is going to do really well.
Same. The two sight gags at the end were great.

Great.....MOS is gonna get owned by Monsters University probably. :(

This isn't a movie designed to sell toys. This is about story telling at it's most basic form. And give me a freaking break, please tell me what fairy tale isn't one dimensional? Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty.

And you can knock off the l33t speak stuff, it's really annoying. I know you like to think your opinion is the only one that counts.

MoS gets released a week before.

As for how it will do. Ask me in 6 months. :yay:

I doubt it. Both movies will probably make tons at the box office, but I see MoS making more. We haven't seen the reactions to the MoS teaser yet, which will hopefully come with TDKR.

Oh please, just coz someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they think their opinion is the only one that counts. And I said one dimensional by Pixar standards, the story has got issues and lacks the polish Pixar are renowned for.

I agree!

I haven't seen this yet, but I am going to assume the words "one dimensional" are being used properly here right. Right? :D
