A Playmobil Movie is on the Way!

Source: Variety
November 12, 2014

Following in the footsteps of their Danish rival, LEGO, German toy company Playmobil is, Variety reports, developing its own feature film take on the company's popular toy line. Paris-based ON Entertainment is partnering with Wild Bunch and Pathe for an $80-million dollar animated Playmobil feature.

Dreamworks veteran Bob Persichetti (Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek 2) is heading the development team, which will consist of the same creatives that made ON Entertainment's The Little Prince feature, set to debut in Fall of next year.

Created by Hans Beck in 1974, Playmobil playsets have become a favorite of children, best known for their iconic figurines that pre-date the LEGO minifigure. Over 2.7 billion figurines have been sold worldwide, with 30 different play worlds for the filmmakers to mine for story ideas.

The Playmobil movie is produced by Dimitri Rassam, Aton Soumache, Alexis Vonarb and Moritz Borman, with production set to commence in Montreal at ON Entertainments animation division for a worldwide theatrical release at the end of 2017, where it will compete against Warner Bros.' The LEGO Batman Movie.

I used to play a lot with those toys. I made my own Batman figures with them:hehe: hmm, Playmobil Batman? "To the Playmobile!"

80 million dollars?

They're going to need a cheaper version of the Lego cast as well:

John Mulaney as Hamlet
Gillian Jacobs and Crazyways
Keith David as Vesuvius
Chris Parnell as Count Commerce
Will Arnett as Night Man (come on, we all know he'll do anything for a paycheque)

Playmobil had cool stuff, but they were way more expensive than Lego.

Does Playmobil have any franchises the way Lego does?
Or are they basing this on their toys alone?

Not that they need it (although it worked great for Lego), from the themes they cover, seems like they could do some kind of time travel globe hopping adventure?

I don't really see how this movie could work. The LEGO movie was essentially about a boy creating stuff with LEGO, and his dad not letting him play and thus being the villain of the film.

Playmobil are essentially a cross between Fisher Price's Little People play sets and LEGO figurines. So the figures were essentially like larger LEGO figures, yet all of their play sets (castles, pirate ships, wild west saloons, etc) were all already made. There was no building involved. So how does having them come to life in an animated movie make any kind of sense, storywise?

well that is different, funny, but different

Again, can someone merge the two threads?
