Hey guys,
I'm doing a project for Ohio State University about subordinate group representation in Marvel Comic's superhero population (pretty awesome, huh?)

A subordinate group basically means a population that's not a dominant group. And I've got 7 categories to fill; ethnic, gender, religious, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, and physical or mental ability. ..though I think I'll cut socioeconomic status do to it's fine line-ish qualities in comics.

So, how about I'll give what I've got so far, and then feel free to add to my lists. I think I have a pretty good handle on the MU, but it's still huge and I don't want to forget anybody. Should be fun anyway. =]

Religious:
Shadowcat- Jewish
Thing- Jewish
Magneto- Jewish
Daredevil- Catholic
Nightcrawler- Catholic

Sexual Orientation:
Northstar- gay
Flatman- gay
Mystique- bi
Destiny- bi
Freedom Ring- gay
Wiccan- gay
Hulkling- gay
Rawhide Kid- gay

Age: (The youth or the elderly. I'll probably have to stick with teens or young teens and under, due to the large number here.)
Artie Madox
Leech
Rage
Centennial

Physical or mental ability:
Hornet- pulsied arm
Puck- Dwarfism
Microbe- Obesity
Aurora- various mental illnesses
Cloak- stutter
Xavier- usually, loss of leg use
Nick Fury- partial sight loss
Daredevil- blind
Destiny- also blind, right?
Alicia Masters- blind (not a super hero, but I'm throwing her in for the time being.)

Race or Ethnicity: (this is the big one.)
Native American:
Shaman
Yukon Jack
Talisman
Puma
Firebird

Chinese:
Radioactive Man
Jubilee?

Russian:
Colossus

German:
Nightcrawler

Of Mexican and Puerto Rican decent:
Arana

African American:
Storm
Deathlok
Black Panther
Goliath
Blade
Pulsar
Bishop
Centennial
Falcon
Luke Cage
Rocket Racer
Night Thrasher
Doorman
Prowler
Cloak
Harrier
Robbie Robertson (listed like Alicia Masters was.)

Anyone from Big Hero 6
Anyone from Alpha Flight

So, what do you think? Just heroes, remember, and just from Marvel Comics.
I'm most interested in sexual orientation, mental or physical ability, any elderly that are still active, or ethnicities other than African American. But any help is welcome and appriciated.

Thank you so much.
Hype rules!

Black Panther is not an African American.

I think he's scared to use the word "black".

Tony Stark... Alcohalism and heart problems

And Cyclops has/had brain damage.

The biggest minority in the Marvel 616; In fact, you can say they are an endangered species.

Mutants....all 198 of them.

Scarlet Witch---mentally ill.

By the way, Magneto is an atheist ("As a boy I believed, as a boy I turned my back on God forever.") Odds are that his birth family was Jewish, though.

Sabra is Jewish, but I'm not sure that would count since she's and Isreali hero. There are also at least a couple of Native American Heroes like Redwolf
Here's a link for a list. Most of them are from old Western comics and probably don't translate to current Marvel.

Isn't Magneto Gypsie? I could swear somewhere I read that he was of gypsy descent like Doom. There's another one for you: Dr. Doom is of Gypsy dexcent and heavily scarred.

Actually women are a minority in the MU really. There are less female Superheroes than males.

IIRC, Magneto is gypsy, not jewish.

Thanks guys. You're a lot of help in this.

I guess, in my haste, I was going with the American titles of things. So sorry about calling Black Panther "African American" instead of black.

Just curious (and sorry for my ignorance) but what would you call someone like Yukon Jack. All I know of is the 'proper american term.'

But again, any extra help is still appriciated.

That doesn't necessairily mean that he doesn't believe in God. He could believe in God but also hate God.

Electro is bisexual??

So, who's the guy he's had relations with??

Well, he did pay a shapeshifting hooker to turn into Spider-Man.

Good point Q, can't hate God and without believing in him.

why does it feel like there is something missing from his list of minorities?

The Darkhold's Victoria Montessi is gay.

Donald Blake (Thor) was handicapped.

Brother Voodoo is a priest of voodoo.
Silouette has paralyzed legs.
Demolition Man has a bad heart, and has to be carefull.
Captain Mar - Vell had cancer.
Charles Xavier is in a wheelchair.
Madcap is mentally ill.
Shroud is blind.
Daredevil is blind.
FoolKiller is mentally ill.
Karma is Vietnamese.
The Runaways are all young, especially Bruiser (11 or 12).
If Black Bolt speaks, he damages everything around him (that's a disability of sorts... he remains voluntarily mute to avoid destroying his enviorment.)
Battlestar is black... and illiterate!
Howard the duck was a Duckling American (sorry.)
Misty Knight, prostetic limb.
HawkEye was hearing impaired, even wearing hearing aids.
Moon Knight has suffered severe mental problems.
Moondragon, too, for that matter (the bald girl in the Defenders).
Blade must take his drug or he flips out and sucks blood.
Mr. Immortal attempted suicide before becoming a hero.
Captain America is 80 years old, and can't understand some of the things he sees in today's world.
Nick Fury is also old, but seems to "get it" more than Cap.
Punisher: I'm pretty sure he could be diagnosed with a mental illness.
Rocket Racer, Afro American, poor family, and he has a criminal background.
Triatholon, cult member or some weird religion, perhaps meant to mimic scientology without coming out and saying it.

And don't forget, lots of villians, when you ask the heros and cops (in comics) what drives them, what their motivation is, the good guys will say, "He's a psychopath." or he's crazy. Lot's of mental illness for villains. Psychopath. Megalomania. Etc.

Oh, and don't forget the Legacy Virus, the Marvel Universe take on HIV and AIDS, in my oppinion.

Here's a page detailing most if not all black superheroes in comics: http://www.blacksuperhero.com/

Here is a page detailing the religions of most if not all comic book characters: http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/comic_book_religion.html Although be warned, just because it has a certain religion listed under a character doesn't necessarily mean that the characters practice it devoutly.

Jubilee is Chinese, yes. Shang-Chi and Wong (assistant to Dr. Strange) are both Chinese as well, though I don't know if you'd count the latter as a superhero...

Noriko Ashida aka Surge from New X-Men, Shiro Yoshida aka Sunfire, Hisako Ichiki from Astonishing X-Men, and Nico Minoru from the Runaways are all of Japanese descent. Nico was a former altar girl and could easily quote Bible passages, although it's unknown if she still practices.

Xi'an "Shan" Coy Mahn aka Karma is Vietnamese. She is also Catholic.

Sean Cassidy aka Banshee (now deceased) and Theresa Rourke Cassidy aka Siryn are both Irish. Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane is a devout Scots Presbyterian.

Sooraya Qadir aka Dust from the New X-Men is a Sunni Muslim.

Storm is obviously deeply religious, although it's hard to pinpoint just what her religion is. It's a form of goddess worship certainly, but not really like any of its new age forms.

Magnetos origins have never been revealed, all the names he has used are known to be false. The only thing that is truly known is that his family was large and from eastern Europe and that they are all dead.
