You can help along with thousands of other users in the fight to find a cure for cancer. And you don't even need to do anything.

How You Can Help
By supporting grid.org, your computer's processor will help power drug discovery projects that otherwise would be too costly and time-consuming to undertake. Signing up means participating in research that benefits people around the globe. So you're not just joining a project - you're joining a cause. To participate, simply download a free, non-invasive software program that works as a screensaver. It runs when your computer has idle processing time. Your computer never leaves your desk and the project never interrupts your normal use.

DOWNLOAD HERE

Please take the time to at least read the site. They have made some breakthroughs through the help of this research and you never know how it might be applied in the future.

We can even start a HYPE! team.

I must admit, this response is disappointing... Even from here.

My family has 2 computers (one laptop, one desktop) and I've already downloaded this on both. I completely agree w/ you GR. But don't worry, when people finally get their PS3s on the network, the processing power will get a big jump.

Seriously... That's all that will come from this thread?

I fail to see how downloading a screensaver is going to help cancer research.

^^ i agree, how does your processor help with cancer research, and your telling me all the foundations dedicated to finding a cure for cancer is'nt enough?

It's not a screensaver!

Read what it does here:

Your computer processes the ligands thereby saving thousands of hours of lab time/resources.

What did you expect? Just because we don't want to put a screensaver on our pc's that opens a port that allows them to use our cpu (and who knows who else), we don't want a cure for cancer. Come on man, fighting for a cause is admirable, but layoff. There are many other ways to support finding a cure.

heres the official word from the website
A new way to help
A landmark research project has begun that allows people to make a real difference in the fight against cancer.

The United Devices Cancer Research Project is asking you to volunteer your PC to help process molecular research being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.

It's safe and easy
There is no cost to participate and no impact on your computer use. The project software cannot detect or transfer anything on your machine but project-specific information. It just allows your computer to screen molecules that may be developed into drugs to fight cancer. Each individual computer analyzes a few molecules and then sends the results back over the Internet for further research. This project is anticipated to be the largest computational chemistry project ever undertaken and represents a genuine hope to find a better way to fight cancer.

The computational power to perform research of this scale is only available through the generosity of individuals like you.

i did it. i trust that gamma ray has had no problems with it

Like robbing a bank and giving the loot to the researches!

...

:o not that I would do that...

I think HIV/AIDS is more important than Cancer. Of course...the omst important one is...

Global Warming because it effects the planet...not just us.

HIV/AIDS can be stopped if people would quit screwing everything that moves without wearing a condom and quit sharing a needle. Global Warming is a myth just like the alligators in the sewer.

Cancer is a disease that needs a cure.

Again, calling it a screensaver just makes you look stupid because if you read the links you'd know that a screensaver is the last thing it should be considered. And I'm stating the obvious here, but you're clearly just trying to make it seem insignificant by giving it that title.

The program connects to the internet only to send back the information it decodes. There are no incoming connections, unless there is an update or something of that nature - and that never happens.

I don't care if you don't use it, but at least educate yourself before typing nonsense. But I don't blame you. Diarrhea of the mouth doesn't have a cure yet either.

I don't think it's fair to say that any one disease is more important than the other. And unfortunately, Global Warming cannot be "cured" with any computer program.

To me, it just seems like it's using the person's PC as a processing server, instead of putting so much strain on their servers, it's using all of these people's computers as small servers by breaking the info up and then putting it all together later. Is that what it is Gamma?

That's the jist of it.

How do I know this doesn't contain a virus? Secondly, they have thousands upon thousands of better computers than mine they have access to. Thirdly, for me to download this and help them, that means they have access to my computer. Sorry but this sounds all to good to be true.

So sorry, 'Like a Screensaver'.

By the way, I'm not saying its a bad idea. Just not for me; I'd rather donate my time and money.

By the way, acting like a jackass is great way to promote this cause.

Keep up the Good Work, Gamma.

It's a highly regarded and respected project in the medical world. It's sponsored by the likes of IBM and Oxford University.

But you're right... They're just looking to put a virus on your computer. :whatever:

Honestly, has anyone even clicked on the links I've posted?

i downloaded it and nothing seens to be going wrong. check it out before you judge
