Pope Benedict to retire for health reasons

Sweet, a latino pope. Better get to work installing hydraulics and a kick-ass 808 in the popemobile.

Honestly, I was kind of hoping Timothy Dolan would have been elected. Just imagine all the memes....

Where are you getting your information?

He grew up with a Catholic education by nuns. Limited knowledge... I bet he was more informed about Christianity than most Christians. You seem like you have limited/no desire to increase your knowledge about George Carlin.

Allow me to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6c2_Ady66Q#t=7m59s
I mean, I'm not sure of everything Carlin said about Religion. It's been a while since I've listened to his stand-up...but Maher made up a ton of crap in Religuous to support his arguments. That Osiris/Horus/Krishna stuff is complete bullsh**, like "even bothering to quickly glance a wikipedia articles disproves it" level of bullsh**. There's a ton of stuff he touts as facts in that movie that are just plain wrong.

Another old guy. How about try something new. There were a few in their 50s who were tech savvy and have a better idea of the current world they are in. I look for this guy to croak in the not so distant future.

And lol at the above article. Keep on dreaming. There is no and never will be a rebirth of the Holy Roman Empire. Not with steady progress of modern society and ya know all the child rape. Europe don't want none of that ****.

The cardinals choose old men because age imposes the ultimate term limit for a pope. Someone in his fifties might be pope for thirty years or more, whereas a 78 year old might be pope for a decade, if that. The Vatican is in disarray these days, with various factions vying for internal control. Installing an older pope gives all the factions the prospect of having another go at installing someone they consider friendly in just a few years.

If they believe what they say, that God chooses his vicar, then they shouldn't elect based on age. If he is fifty and is pope for thirty years then God willed it. Of course I'm not foolish enough to think any of these cardinals believe God picks the Pope. Its all politics and palm greasing in that conclave. They don't want to commit to anyone for too long, but it is a mistake. The Church needs stability not change ups every 5 years.

The reason they don't do that is because if he sucks they are stuck with him for 30-40 years.

Though I think Ratzinger's precedent of retiring is going to become a routine now.

It's PR and politics. Half or more of the people in that conclave and the Vatican don't believe in anything let alone God "choosing" the Pope.

If God picked Popes, his judgment would have been proven completely and utterly incompetent about a thousand years ago.

*cynical mood*

The myriad screw ups, flaws, and dead ends in nature not to mention senseless death would seem to prove poor judgments on God's part. But mysterious ways and all that.

Being here in Miami, listening to the Latin American population's reaction to this news has been hilarious.

Say hello to the new Pope. Same as the old Pope.

A bunch of childless, ostensibly celibate old men declaring they know what constitutes a "legitimate" family gets tiresome to say the least.

Try living a day of your life in reality, or shut up about it.

Not that the Vatican has ever had any moral credibility anyway.

76 years old? Good to see the Vatican trying to appeal to the youth demographic.

Should've gotten Timothy Dolan. He looked like a man who lived in the 21st century, with a decent personality to boot. Though, that's just the NY bias in me, I hardly even know the other ones.

The Vatican won't pick an american pope because america is still a superpower. Even Dolan has said that.

The chances of an american poper are slim to none for the forseeable future.
