Pope Benedict to retire for health reasons

I've heard maybe the Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York. Him being American makes him kind of seem like a longshot though. Other hopefuls come from below the equator. The Church seems to be gaining in popularity there or maintaining popularity while it is losing popularity in Europe.

It's definitely long past time for a non-European pope, especially one from a Third World country. I thought that the Church was going to elect such a candidate after John Paul II died, but obviously that didn't happen.

The problem with a "young" pope (young being someone in their late 50's) is that if he's terrible, you might be stuck with him for 20 to 30 years.

While electing a non-European pope isn't a bad idea, I'm skeptical we'll see the Church doing that. The leadership is made up mostly (not to mention disproportionately) of aging European Cardinals.

Non-Europeans are generally viewed as outsiders. But we'll see. Stranger things have happened (like the first pope resigning since the Middle Ages).

The chance of a non-white or American pope or pretty slim considering how staunch they are with their choices. We're like the farthest from what they want in a pope.

Problem is what they want is hurting the Church and causing stagnation.

I'm hoping Peter Turksin wins. Just the simple fact he fits St. Malachy Prophecy to a tee would be hilarious

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes

As an avid listener of Coast to Coast I heard of this prophecy like 10 years ago and found it funny. basically they linked Pope Benedict to the 111th Pope prophecy because it was glory of the olives and Benedict was born in a country known for olives. The 112th and Last is referred to "Peter the Roman aka the Black Pope", who would have thought Black Pope was literal and not figurative. lol

That prophecy alone should guarantee that Turkson won't get the job. I doubt the Vatican wants to see the end of the world any more than the rest of us do.

I would just love to see the conspiracy theorists heads roll if he does get picked. lol

Conspiracy theorists will make something up whatever the decision...

I'm surprised that even conspiracy theorists give much credence to that prophecy. All evidence points to it being forgery. And even the prophecy itself is unclear as to whether there will be more Popes between Benedict XVI and this "Peter the Roman."

Although a good possibility it's a forgery, I think the forgery was from like the 1500s so you could say ever Pope before that doesn't count but every one after does. All that being said in some cases the prophecy works pretty good and in others it seems like they are stretching to find a way to link the Pope to the prophecy. All that being said Peter Turkson fits it down to a tee. On the other side if it's somebody else I would love to see how they link the prophecy to them. lol
