A New Thing is Coming
Source: Variety
January 29, 2009

Variety has confirmed a Bloody-Disgusting scoop that said commercials director Matthijs van Heijningen will direct a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 horror-thriller The Thing.

The studio has set "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ron Moore to write the script.

The new project borrows heavily from the John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There," the basis of the Carpenter film and 1951 Howard Hawks original The Thing From Another World.

It is set in a Norwegian camp and chronicles how the alien was first discovered and overcame the inhabitants of that camp.

Strike Entertainment's Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. David Foster will be executive producer.

I prefer this to a pointless remake.

I agree, Hunter. I wonder where the film will end - chasing the dog?

I would've been happy if it wasn't the Norweigians but some other camp. Seriously does the little detail that his older brother is there somehow escape MacReady? Codswallop!

To me this is the equivalent to showing the Space Jockey crashing on LV-426 before Alien. It destroys the mystery of what happened. It's not supposed to be known what happened there and that's what The Thing and Alien are riding on, the fear of the unknown.

The Thing is easily in my top 5 films of all time. They should leave it's mysterious origins well alone.

This is such a stupid idea. We already know what happened to the f**king Norwegians. They died. There, I saved a movie studio millions of dollars, no need to make the movie now.

And whats up what that MacReady's brother bull???

Words can not disribe how stupid this idea is.

Whats next? A prequel to The Fly?

I'm not completely sold on the idea but I'd prefer it over an I Am Legend prequel.

The Thing is by far and away my favourite film of all time. I've always said that they if there was either gonna be another Thing film, they should make a prequel featuring the Swede's. But, MacReady's brother is by far the worst idea I've heard in a long time.

They better call this THE Thing: Insert Subtitle.

There's a new weird trend right now with prequels/sequels to not name the new movie anything else but the original title. For example, the Tron sequel is currently titled "Tron". Why? It's the sequel.

The Thing: Carrots and Swede

What's this thing about Mac's brother? So what, is he working with the Norwegians or something?

They should call it "The Thing: Blood From A Stone" ... or "The Thing: We're Not Realling Trying."

Honestly, when I first saw Carpenter's remake, it was one of the most disturbing films I had known. Ever since the dog's head split open like a flower and I was like "WHAA!!!???"

I just don't understand the reasoning. Sure it makes for a quick buck, but why run the risk of completely alienating fans of the material like that?

Stupid.

lol

'Alienating fans'. Like the fans even register when they're thinking of the golden $$$$.

lol no I suppose not.

Still, it's an absurd practice.

A prequel would make more sense but the Thing and so many other movies have been made like it already that it would seem pointless. I mean Dreamcatcher had some The Thing elements to it and it failed to me.

I would rather they just leave this alone.

They should leave it alone, the best part of The Thing is that you don't know where it came from or what it really is. They should keep it mysterious.

"People always fear what they don't understand"

-Carmine Falcone.

You know where it came from. It was the first scene.

Anywho, like others, The Thing is my favorite horror movie of all time. I wouldn't mind a prequel but is Macready's brother really in it?

He just forgot? That's why he always called 'em Swedes? What the hell?

:thing: :thing: :thing:

Well yea we see it come down to earth. But I just really don't want to know it's full origin, whats the point? It's much scarier to not know where something came from or what it really is.

Well we don't have to learn anything about it's origins. The same thing that happened in the original movie will happen here. They dig something out and then it silently infiltrates the group until they are all burning each other.

Their Mac escapes and tries to kill the dog.

:thing: :thing: :thing:

Yea I suppose, but then it would just be a re-hash of the original, with less interesting characters. You can't get much better than Kurt Russell and Keith David, so why bother?

I would've been happy if it wasn't the Norweigians but some other camp. Seriously does the little detail that his older brother is there somehow escape MacReady? Codswallop!

that's what Riddley Scott's been wanting to do with Alien for a long time
