PS3 Ethernet Cord Question

I need to update my PS3 and connect it online to do so, but before I get an ethernet cord for it, I have some questions in regards to enabling the internet on it:


1. I went to three different stories and I was told by employees at two that every ethernet cord should universally work with a PS3, is this true? If so, I can get any ethernet cord for it and not a specific type or brand?

2. Does the PS3 need to be fed a wireless signal from the wireless router I use or I can give it to it from my own laptop by simply plugging it into my laptop and then plugging the other cord into my PS3, and from there it should be online-ready?

3. Maybe a silly question, but if I did the second option, it wouldn't "steal" the online from my laptop? Or if I connected it to the router itself, as long as it was getting wireless from a different port other than the one I use for my laptop, it shouldn't affect my laptop's connection?

Any Ethernet cable will do. Which PS3 model do you have? All PS3's have wifi (except the old 20gb's), so if you have a wireless router, then you can just use that and not worry about an Ethernet cable. Here is a link to how to connect it.

Thanks for the link, and my PS3 is a PS3 slim. Is there a particular number I have to look for on it?

If you have a Slim, than you are good to go. Just follow the instructions in the link and you'll be off and running.

Those instructions are for wifi (wireless). If you want to use an Ethernet cable, than use these instructions instead.

I don't think I'll be using Wi-Fi for my PS3, I'll likely use those instructions you showed just now, instead. They shouldn't interfere with the other connections either, so long as I connect the cable from a seperate port to my PS3? I just ask these because this is my first time ever having a game console online.

Just think of it as another PC or Laptop connected to your network. There should be no interference.
