I just popped in a game and it wouldn't read it. It just stayed at the main menu where your profile is. I tried several times shutting it off and taking the game out and sliding it back in, but it did the same thing. Has anybody else encountered this problem?

is it just that one game or do others not work as well? I've had something like that happen to me before and all it took was me cleaning the back of the disc to get it running. I guess I had put some fingerprint smudges and it had trouble reading it. Try this and see if it will work

in rare cases the diode breaks.

Yeah, try cleaning the disc. I had this happen on some of my Blu Rays.

It's happened with multiple games. The games are in fact new cause I got them for christmas. I just got home so let me try again.

Alright, I tried the games again, didn't work. I also tried a regular DVD and a blue ray disc, they didn't work either. I watched a DVD on it yesterday and it was working fine. I know it's not the disks because I took one to my brothers and it worked perfect.

Weird. Seems like a problem with your PS3. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

That's alright. I started noticing problems last week when the same thing happened. I haven't turned the PS3 on untill yesterday. I'll keep trying and if nothing works, i'll send it to get fixed.

Are you getting the "Disc Read Error" message? It could be dust on the emitter in the PS 3. You can get a cleaner disc with teeny little brushes on it for about 11 bucks at Radio Shack. It worked when it happened to me. Try that before you go thru the hassle (and expense) of getting it fixed.

I'll try that then. I forgot that there were cleaner disks for stuff like this.

Do you move you Playstation around much, like taking it to a friends house, college, or anything like that? Make sure if you ever do move it, to take any discs out of it before moving it.

I've never moved it before. It's been in the same spot since I got it.

My friends PS3 had a corrupt disk problem. Sometimes the game wouldn't load with an error, or it'd say corrupt data over the disk. Before he sent it back I suggested going to setting and restoring the default settings. He kept his save data, friends list, but had to redownload his trophies, and lost his bookmarks and wallpaper. It seemed to fix the problem as he's had no trouble since.

Yours isn't quite the same tho. It doesn't seem like corrupt data, if it's not reading anything it could be a problem with the BR drive itself. I just thought I'd tell you that so at the very least you could try it before you sent it off, but I doubt it'll work.

By "redownload trophies" do you mean he had to just redownload them from the server (meaning sync up with teh sony internets) or that he had to earn them back from playing his games?

If you earn a trophy in a game, after you quit the game, go to the trophy icon in the game section. It will update your trophy collection and give it to the Sony servers. If you ever, for whatever reason, have to lose the data off your PS3 hard drive, just click the trophy icon again when your PS3 is back up and running. Sony servers store your trophy data, and you can redownload the info any time. However first you do have to click that trophy icon and let it sync the trophy info with Sony servers.

You see, when I turn my PS3 on, it goes right to the main menu and just stays there. It doesn't say disk read error or anything like that. I had problems with my PS2 back in the day and it said that, but not this time.

Can we just make this the official trouble shooting thread? I have a problem as well that I know other people have had yet I've never found a soloution to it:

My PS3 won't recognize or can't locate an IP address all of a sudden, I can't connected to the internet on it. I have tried everything I can, reset all the network options to default and whatnot yet still I can't connect. It just keeps telling me to check my settings.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I finally bought a cleaner disk and it still doesn't work. In fact when I put in the cleaner disk, it didn't even do anything. My background on the main page turned to an olive green.
