question about unresolved Sonic storyline

In Sonic the Hedgehog there was a story about this new bad guy bringing all of Sonics villains together and he was called "Anonymous". At the end of the stroy was it suppoed to be revealed as the return of the old Doctor Robotnik. I know you saw the outline of him, but after that story they never brought it up again.

When was this? I know at some point the original Robotnik did return, but it was only for a short period of time. And the current Robotnik/Eggman originally looked like the old one, only fully robotic, so that might have been him.

This story has been running for awhile, and it got big during issues 164 or somewhere around there.

If it was that recent, it was probably dropped due to executive meddling from Sega. They've forced Archie to drop a lot of their stuff before, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were the case there.
