Race and Gender in Marvel Movies - an all studios discussion

Well there two latino solo comics in marvel.
Nova(sam) and Miguel'O Hara.

Nova(sam) could still considered native american/east asian origin too like i said in my other reply.

This is his mom by the way in the comics.

I think there is female latino spiderwoman but i do not know here racially background yet.
There is a east asian spiderman for east asian comic readers and him on tv in asia i think too.

As for Miguel i have not seen a clear enough picture of him or enough pics of him and i do not know what is his latino origin yet.I might have read it before but i can't recall now.

I WOULD HAVE TO LOOK THAT UP.

He could be racially native american/origin too,or brown or a white latino.

Like i said i have to look at a number of his art work and look into his background to really know.

Trust me,i am good at this stuff.

Sam is also known as Samuel Alejandro. Clearly a Spanish name there. Miguel is of Irish and mexican decent.

Regardless there doesn't seem to be more then one "Solo Star" who's latino. Most are half white or half black. After decades of comic characters there's barely anything there regarding major characters.

I know, sam is ethnically latino because of spain and the conquest of mexico so there was no choice there.

Spanish and the culture of spain was forced on the native american population etc.. but his phenotype or racially he is native american/east asian.

Most mexicans by the way are half white and half native american,in fact most latinos are a mixture of different races anyway these days, but you could still tell what racial group they belong to.
Some latinos are still all white or all black or all native american/asian or asian.

A latino group awhile ago was doing a census in mexico and when they ask what race they were in the video and they were asking this to native american/asian looking mexicans who are latino, most said white, and clearly the ones ask in the video did not look white.

Miguel now you mention it and his background remind me of green lantern kyle, but i still have not seen enough of his art work so it's hard to say if he looks like a white latino or more closer racially to a native american/asian type.

Green lanten Klye for example is part mexican or his father IS i think but FROM PAST ART WORK HE LOOKED white but from what i heard lately he is being drawn to look more like he is least part native american i think.
I COULD BE WRONG.

Take look at this video.
Clearly most of the folks in the video below shown are native american /east asian.

It very informative and give you a idea of the brain washing in latin america.
When Brown people think they are White

The confusion is also visible in the question of race and heritage. The Census Bureau is insisting on forcing people who speak Spanish to write in Hispanic or Latino, which are European cultural heritages.

In the video above they have separate race group for native americans, but like i said native americans racially really belong to the east asian race.
They are just culturally different then east asians.

That's ok, thank you though. This is not really my overall point.

Correction -that video is from the united states.

My debate here is that all those getting casted and showing up in big or starring roles for Marvel comics and movies are either White or Black males. And that when it comes to Black Females, Asian males and mexican/hispanic/latino/Spanish characters there are barely any to start with or hardly any fuss about it.

You mean solo marvel movies for asian, black and latino(any race)superheros?
I got you now.
You are right about that so far for marvel movies.
Of course for marvel comics there have been very few solo comics for asian men, latinos, and black women.

As for black women,Storm has a current solo series for the time being and i think there were few other black women superheros but mostly mini-series.
Same with asian men and latinos or those of native american origin.
There have been solo series for the other groups mention here in the past as well but most of thier comics were a mini-series too.

There are a few. But it's definitely scarce and difficult to name characters of major importance. Storm being the excpetion and that book is very recent and guaranteed to get the chop with sales next year.

Marvel has definitely been getting more diverse with their choices especially with Ms Marvel the past year but again, it's very difficult to name major characters of those genders/ethnicity who can carry a title or have significant roles.

Some do have significant roles in the comics if they do not have solo comics.

Like sunfire, nova, spiderman 2099,silk,white tiger, kaluu, monica rambeau,jubilee,Shang-Chi,the new captain universe more so in the past, sunspot now and the leader of his own avengers group in the avengers comic, but he is Brazilian and few others not mention here.
I think brazilians are considered latinos too,i could be wrong.

Of course a few these do and did have thier own solo,mini-series or one shot in the past or currently or recently.

There were others in past who roles were more significant in the comics but i think that will change again as time goes on.

I think Gilgamesh(forgotten one) in marvel comics is being drawn as more of brown man but in the past he was drawn as white or more white.

Sure and I named most of those myself in previous pages or threads. But again, in a world of thousands that's not a big list at all. The X-Men alone have hundreds of characters.

I'd say Sunfire is the most popular asian male Marvel hero, or maybe Hiro with BH6 now. But that won't get a new comic anytime soon. And the chances of Sunfire ever getting a decent role in an X film or animated show are slim. Heck, Sunspot didn't get one line out in DOFP.

I would be willing to give a Radioactive Man film a chance.

Runaways still holds some of the the most potential with diversity in their main group imo.

Great book and characters on top of it. Nico is extremely underused.

I was going to mention nico and the runways.

By the way i know there are alot of links i posted above but it's interesting reading so take you time over time with those.

Forgot about Victor Mancha, so there's another hispanic character.

Oh the new ghost rider is latino.
He got a solo series but racially i do not know what he is yet and i have not read his comic and i do not know what he looks like or if i seen him i forgot what he looks like.
So there are 3 latino superhero solo marvel comics out there now.
All men.

Anyway i added that info above.

Let's not forget captain america and the mighty avengers comic, the past mighty avengers comic, the x-men current book is all female and one of the ultimate comics is highly racially diverse too from what i read in another thread/forum or something like that.

The marvel comics overall have done a good enough job in showing blacks, native americans, asians, browns and latinos etc...

It's the movies, live action tv shows and animated series that need more improvement.
The animated shows/movies are the next ones that have done a better job then movies on average however.

Still disagree. Just cause we can name a few (most that are recent) doesn't mean it's been represented well. Are they trying? I think so, especially lately. But it's hardly and far from a solid representation overall with characters that will last. Female characters in general are just now starting to get a fair representation. There's a ways to go, and the best thing they can do is create new characters with it mind. Which is what they have been doing lately with chracaters like Nova, Silk, Ms Marvel etc.

But I can't say they have done a great job overall with Asian Males in the comics just cause there is one supporting character from X-Men. Or with Black Females cause there's Storm. Those are only two characters, in the grand scheme there are very few and they don't get much attention. I assume Misty Knight is gonna show soon, but what Black female Avenger can Marvel Studios add that's realistic for their story telling right now? Or Asian Male? Or Hispanic Avenger?

People want Black Panther, Carol, Doc Strange, Wasp, Ant Man, Spider-Man etc.

Yes,that's what i am saying, things have improve recently, but keep in mind things do not improve that much if folks do not write letters and do not buy the comics.
So things have improve more recently and you said it yourself so there has been more progress,so you are agreeing with me on that point.
It's movies and tv shows that need more improvement but there has been some improvement on that too.
The new aquaman for the dc movie is south east asian in origin, but mixed,of course that's dc movies.

One of the reason things are improving more is because more folks are saying things about it and the population for asians and latinos and brown folks is growing.
So it's population size issue and those who buy the american comics.
In the past it was population size issues and buying of comics.

TODAY IT'S MORE ABOUT WHO BUY COMICS AND WHO are sending letters etc..

For example black women/girls are not into comics as much as black men/boys and asian americans tend to read comics from asia too not just america.

I think asian americans do not buy american comics from marvel or dc on average has much black americans, and the same for latinos.

Blacks folks in america tend to more vocal and as a racial group are still second the largest group.
Blacks in comics took time to increase,it was not overnight thing.

LATINO IS NOT RACE SINCE WHITES,NATIVE AMERICANS,ASIANS,BROWN AND BLACKS COULD BE LATINO TOO.

The latino population in america is about 14% to 15% and black population is about 12% to 13% and asians are less.
Whites are still close 70%,but now i think white americans are about 68% or 67% of america so they are still the majority.

Speaking of asians those from the india and other regions are counted as asian, not just east asians.

So latinos are now the second largest ethnic group in america but they are not the second largest racial group in america, blacks still are but things have improve recently like you and i have said and will improve more if more letters etc..are being sent and comic buying increase.
