Radio host uses the N-word repeatedly

Yeah, I saw that on the news. I don't understand how someone calls your radio show for help and instead of helping her you basically berate her while thousands of people are listening. Although I do agree that some people are too sensitive, that is not how you handle the situation. Not to mention, her comments on interracial marriage and alluding that most black people voted for obama simply because he is black were completely uncalled for

it all depends on the usage,

you can say ***** and it's alright but say ****** and that's not cool

Not here it's not. :woot:

Seriously though, that radio host was an idiot. Most people who try to make a statement about political correctness completely miss the point. It's common courtesy to just not say things that you know are going to piss off people in your company.

There are people on other boards actually defending it, calling it a double standard, then getting into how black people sold each other as slaves, something that has nil to do with the topic at hand. I swear. As I said before, there's a difference between not wanting to be politically incorrect and just being a bigoted *******.

I don't think she was being mean spirited, but I'm sure most will disagree and this will blow up. Now Kramer on the other hand...

Dr. Laura is a judgmental and self-righteous ***** anyway and her being so is not breaking news.

Agreed, she is a complete moron who does not deserve a show at all. I was also surprised to learn she is Jewish. She would not want anyone talking about her ethnicity...so why treat others that way.

Talking s*** about Jews is career suicide in Hollywood compared to talking s*** about Blacks , Asians , Hispanics and Native Americans.

How is this relevant to the thread?

Anyway, Dr. Laura's never been worth listening to. No "advice show" is. This just exemplifies why.

i agree. its obvious that she wasn't using the word in a derogatory way. She was just quoting what she "hears on HBO all the time", in an attempt to make a point.

That being said, she shouldn't have used it; she could have easily gotten the point across without saying the word.

I will admit, the double standard does kind of bug me. I have no intention or desire to use the word, but the double standard is so great that even the most anti-inflammatory usage of the word by a caucasian is an outrage, but no one (generally speaking) raises an eyebrow when a black person uses it in its original intent. Honestly, its kind of ridiculous.

ALP said she shouldn't be talking s*** about anyones ethnicity because she's Jewish and someone could just talk about her being a Jew. She's just talking s*** because she can.

If you don't have any intention of using it, there should be no beef. I don't have a desire to go around calling women the b-word or gays the f-word, and don't gripe when told I can't. Because frankly I would find it disgusting.

Funnily enough, I have a Jewish friend who sometimes makes jokes about herself and Jew stereotypes, like being cheap etc. If anyone else said it though, they would sound like a dick. It's just the way it is.

This is very true and this is the key. I dislike the usage of it myself and would never condone it but when black people like Richard Pryor or Chappelle say the 'n' word it is not meant in a bigoted hateful fashion as when a white person typically says it.

"Oh n-word please" as opposed to "You're gonna get raped by a pack of n-words". One is worse than the other.

I think what most folks realize, unless you have an intimate relationship with a black person (that is close relationship, doesn't have to be sexual), and are comfortable enough that they can accept you saying that to them then it's fine.

However, let's not forget that there are still people alive today who went through the civil rights movement. People who were discriminate upon because of who they are. The wounds are still there. Give it a few more generations and I think racism and or these kinds of divides would be a fringe rather than norm.

Besides, no matter who says it, it really is an ugly word and I personally don't think any educated person should be uttering it.

It's not a double standard. The word changes context when an outsider uses it.

When blacks use it it's obvously not used in the white supremacist context. When a white person uses you can't be sure. If two fat people call each other is fat the word is nuetralized because there is obviously no suggestion of inferiority. That's just the nature of insults.

It's a word...and words only have power if we surrender that power to them (and they don't care either way, because they are only words).

This "N-word" nonsense is stupid. If you are using it in an educational or conversational manner, then the word is just a word. If you use it as a bash against someone else, then really any unwarranted bash is kind of a mean thing to say.

^^ Probably the best way I have ever heard it described. Respect.

She wasn't being mean spirited at all. She was just trying to make an example. I will say though that she (and other people who try and make this point) was being willfully ignorant.

What angered me the most was how she seemed to defend the friend's of the caller's husband by saying she should not be in an interracial relationship if she can't take the verbal abuse. She told another caller who is in a similar situation (whereas the caller's husband had a friend who who would disrespect her by commenting on her big posterior) that it was the husband's duty to stand up for his wife. Why didn't she say the same thing to this caller? My guess is that she's a racist *****! And that's really sad because I have listened to her and agreed with most of her advice. And regarding the N word comment yea there are alot of stupid people who go around calling themselves that, but it's very disrespectful to blacks who try to distance themselves from that word.

Btw, has anybody noticed how all the racists seem to be coming out of the woodwork now that Obama is in office? This was my main fear regarding a black president. The most popular response I have been receiving is that " racist blacks voted Obama in the white house." WTF!!!? You really wanted Palin who was a heartbeat away from the presidency to instigate another war with Iran and her only experience of foreign policy was witnessing Putin from Alaska? What the **** is wrong with my country?? I'm a black citizen and just like every other black American citizen I can trace my roots to relatives who participated in the Revolutionary War and all wars since then. I have family members who were war heroes but weren't allowed to receive American medals in WW1, but yet I'm lumped in the same category as an immigrant. I really don't like this as I love my country, but thats the problem with the USA too many groups, not enough unity. We better get our act together or start learning Mandarin.

They will reap what they sow, brother. That's all I gotta say.

Dr. Laura is a self-righteous d**** who has insecurity issues and is definitely racist.
I can't believe anyone would argue that you should tolerate being called the n word in your own home because "some black guys on BET at 11 o clock" say n word in their show or 'HBO' does it. That's pretty much like saying Americans should tolerate preteen pregnancy because MTV makes shows about it. I was disturbed how she just ignored the caller and put forward her own anti-black agenda on display.
