Did you see that? It flew right over your head.
The typical redneck good ole' boys and the conservative republicans were not the ones spitting on our soldiers..it was the counter culture that was. Like Born on the Fourth of July, First Blood uses irony to make a point that I think you missed.
reply to a very old post, but what the hey, it's discussing the movie, and an important point about it I think.
No, I think the sheriff's main reaction was to do with his being a Veitnam vet, as well as his appearance.
Sure, there might have been some irony in there too with what you're saying about the hippy appearance.
But the thing is, people knew that a lot of ****ed up things happened over there that they don't want to know about and forget.
The sheriff doesn't want some messed up ex-soldier walking about his town who coul've been involved in crazy sh**, who knows what's going through his head.
(edit:The point is it's a small town atht wants to forget the troubles of the outside world, and that's what Rambo's appearnace would remind them of.)
I think in the film it's quite obvious that it's Rambo's military clothing that attracts the sheriff's attention, that's why he wants him out of town, for the reasons stated above.
There may be some irony in the fact he gets slagged off for having long hair but that's not the reason he's run out of town.
From what I understand a lot of Vietnam war vets were left alone to cope with their trauma and fiancial difficulties with not much help from the government. Maybe the hippies were against the war, but that didn't mean they spat on the soldiers, and maybe the conservatives were for the war, but that doesn't mean they didn't spit on the soldiers when they came back after having lost.
I think FB is a classic, of any genre. The phrase 'Rambo knife' entered the lexicon when describing hunting knifes, and Rambo is now a word commonly used to decribe a tough guy.
It's a great tight film with a great final scene from Stallone.
If he and his agent thought this movie was going to mess up his career what were they thinking when they sat in front of Cobra?
