My quick thoughts on each film from present to past.

Doctor Strange - I really enjoyed this one. The visuals are great, most of the humor lands, the protagonists all do a great job. Mads Mikkelsen's character was generic as hell, but at least he wasn't completely sidelined like Malekith was. The action scenes were inventive and amusing, but I also appreciated the presence of some contemplative scenes that really brought out the heart of the film. Big fan of the main theme composed by Michael Giacchino. Not an AMAZING film, but definitely one of the better origin films Marvel has done.

Suicide Squad - By far the biggest disappointment of the year. As a big fan of the source material, David Ayer and some of the cast I had mountain high expectations. In the end, I got a half-baked product murdered by behind the scenes issues and some plain old ill-conceived story ideas. What a colossal waste of a great roster of characters, including my favorite comic book character ever... the Joker. That doesn't mean the movie is completely terrible. The main cast killed it, the movie has some cool and enjoyable scenes. I didn't love Leto's Joker but I do see potential there. The Batman/Deadshot scene was pitch perfect. Overall, a mixed bag and a personal disappointment. Should have been a slam dunk, but wasn't. Looking forward to the extended cut.

X-Men: Apocalypse - Fans seem to be mixed on this film. I'm on the side that enjoyed it. Was the final act a little weak? Sure, but overall the film brought plenty of oomph and compelling characters to keep my interest. The new young cast did a great job, Oscar Isaac was pretty damn entertaining as Apocalypse, an orgasmic opening scene. Not the best of the X-Men movies, and definitely a step down after the excellent Days of Future Past but no trash, either.

Captain America: Civil War - Both MCU movies this year succeeded at what they set out to do. Humor, action, enjoyable characters, broadening the horizons of the cinematic universe. Is it a movie I will rewatch over and over again? No, but I can't deny that there's little to complain about.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - The place where all of the DC drama began. I thought the theatrical cut was a mess. The editing was terrible, some of the story beats made no sense. I was annoyed watching it. The ultimate cut removed a lot of that annoyance. It flows better, good material that was inexplicably removed adds more layers to the film. Ben is convincing as an older, brutal Batman. Wonder Woman's introduction is bad-ass, and I thought the ending was extremely well done. The film does get dull at times, and Zimmer's score is a bit too bombastic for its own good. I've said enough about this film since March.

Deadpool - I had fun with it. Didn't love it. About 50% of the humor landed, the romantic subplot didn't do much for me. Not a movie I'm dying to watch again, but I won't skip the sequel.

I know it wouldn't have got many votes, but why wasn't TMNT2 in the poll?

Many people forget TMNT started as a comic, also i guess because its not as big as Marvel/DC...

Anyway, im seeing Strange tomorrow so i'll post my ranking then.

Civil War
Doctor Strange
Deadpool
Apocalypse
Batman v Superman
Suicide Squad

Ok, I get you did not like it, but this is really an embodiment of internet bandwagon hate culture which loves to exaggerate negative statements about object of their despise beyond reasonable levels.

Me too. But I doubt I'll ever be seeing SS or Apocalypse. I don't need to waste my time. Already did that with BvS.

Hop off that grandstand. You do the same thing with Marvel movies.

I have reasonable hate for that crappy movie, and I admit this ranking is an immature way of expressing it.

This makes it sounds like there's a concerted effort to bring down BvS across the internet when I think for a lot it people it fails because of it's own merits or lack there of.

No effort is required to bring BvS down. It has enough critics and naysayers to bring it down without any effort required. Even WB is responding to the hate, though not in the way they should. Lightening up the movies isn't going to solve the DCEU's major problems.

Because it wouldn't have gotten any votes and it wasn't that good.

Feel free to include them in your rank.

Though I like them, the same could be said for Suicide Squad, or even BvS, yet they were included. Sorry I know it's your poll and not mine but for me all options should have been included.

I did put it in my ranking but will do an updated one once I figure out where Doc Strange falls after seeing it.

Suicide Squad beat BvS in a head to head poll here. And while I'm aware TMNT first started out as a comic book, it's more main stream through the cartoons and 90s movies. I feel it's more aligned with the Transformers, GI Joe, Saturday morning cartoon live action movies.

So excited for Doctor Strange. I'll rank em after I see it. 6 days!!!

Addendum:

1. Captain America: Civil War (:awesome:)
2. X-Men: Apocalypse (great deal of fun)
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows (I know it's a bad one, but I enjoyed it, less than I enjoyed the first entry, although this one has less flaws)
4. Deadpool (enjoyable, but not as much as I could have found it)

7. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice: Ultimate :barf:

I still need to watch the other two, and you will see what I think of Suicide Squad before the end of the year, which I doubt it will be as bad and anguishing to watch as its DCEU predecessor of this year.

Seen them all now, so I can rank honestly.

My rankings

1) Civil War: the best (particularly in terms of character development, and sheer kick-assery ). This is Marvel's best film so far, and I think it comes close to rivalling the Dark Knight. Truly Marvel's "Empire Strikes Back". I don't like Captain America or Iron Man, but after this film I actually started to change my mind.

2) Dr Strange: a superb performance by Cumberbatch and the best special effects ever - a spectacle to rival Kubrik's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Suffered a little from an underdeveloped supporting cast, but overall a terrific and entertaining film. Well done Marvel, I'll put this on a par with GOTG as my second favourite Marvel film.

3) Deadpool: had no expectations of this one, and was pleasantly surprised. Plus, I'll see any movie with Gina Carano in it. Hillarious and plenty of action.

4) X-Men Apocalypse: Not bad, forgettable but reasonably entertaining. Weaker than Days of Future Past, and a lot weaker than First Class.

5) Batman v Superman: a massive disappointment. Had a few good elements/moments (Batman, Wonder Woman) but really they needed to chop about an hour's worth of crap out of it. I felt sad after seeing it, not because Doomsday killed Superman, but because Snyder did a much more serious character assassination of both him and Batman.

All in all not "Awful" as one reviewer wrote, but by no means a good movie.

6) TMNT: Struggled to sit through the whole thing (only did because I was on a plane, not as terrible as Warcraft, but not far off). Probably good fun for the kids, but it's cheesy charm wasn't enough to make me like this one. Although I'd rather watch it again, than Suicide Squad.

7) Suicide Squad: The first half hour teases some potential, but then the rest of the movie manages to create zero tension or interest in the characters. Just awful - and unlike B v S , can't rely on its character's mythic status to generate interest.
Why the **** didn't they just make a live action version of Assault on Arkham - an animated film which was about a million times better than this piece of garbage ?

Welp. Just got back from seeing Doctor Strange, so I think I have a pretty good ranking for this years comic book films.

1) Captain America: Civil War - It's the best Marvel movie ever made, bar none. A perfect storm of action, suspense and humor that never gets boring. Plus it manages to cram a ton of heroes (including Black Panther and Spider-Man) without it feeling bloated. Fantastic.

2) Doctor Strange - I admit to feeling unsure about this. Making a movie about Marvel's weirdest and trippiest character? But damn if they didn't nail it. And it's all thanks to the perfect casting of Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange. He's also aided by a great supporting cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen and others. And that's not mentioning the utterly fantastic visual effects that pay tribute to Steve Ditko's work. It's another win for Marvel, and proof that they do their properties right. *cough* DC Warner *cough*

3) Deadpool - Was expecting stupid fun. I got it, and so much more. This is a perfect adaptation of Wade Wilson for the big screen. A large part comes from the fact that the makers knew what type of movie they were making. This is not a superhero drama (despite the love story), it's a comedy. And a big thumps up to Ryan Reynolds for getting the role of a lifetime, and inviting us for the ride.

4) X-Men Apocalypse - Man, such a disappointment for me. After the excellent First Class and the fantastic Days of Future Past, I was expecting the reboot X-Men trilogy to end on a high note. To end on such a point of mediocrity really bums me out. Even the usual good performances from McAvoy and Fassbender (plus a great villainous turn from Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse) are not enough to lift the film from middling status. This film has left me unsure whether Fox can handle the X-Men franchise going forward. We'll see how Logan turns out though.

5) Batman v Superman - Ugh. Well, here we have it, the start of a new Comicbook Cinematic Universe to compete with the MCU. And how does DC/Warner go about it? By hiring a hack director to completely character assassinate it's two most iconic heroes. Superman is a whiny emo, and Batman's a psycho murderer. And Wonder Woman? She's just there to watch videofile cameos of other heroes. *facepalm* For the last time, stop hiring Zack Snyder to direct your movies! He does not and will never get superheroes right, which is why I'm skipping Justice League for next year.

As for the rest, after BvS and the terrible reviews, there was no way I was watching Suicide Squad. And TMNT? Pfft. I never even bothered with the first one, so why would I watch the sequel?

Today's comic book film and TV landscape is a utopia compared to the options I had back in the 70s and 80s. Take a look at the offerings from that time period. You'll see almost nothing but terrible production values and writing that borrowed very little from the comics on which they were based. We're living in the golden age of the comic book adaptation.

If you look back far before the time you speak of, you'll notice that (aside from a few hiccups) there's been an intelligible development up until a certain point ↓. If you insert any dud released this year within the time span of 99-04, only then would it seem par for the course.

Avengers.
If anything I blame The Avengers' success. Eating McDonald's every once in a while is fine; however, it's not fine to subsist on. The problem is the industry is now chasing Happy Meals instead of filet mignon. At very least I expect my Big Mac not to be cold and riddled with insect innards after being picked up off the floor. Then again, perhaps I'm just the jaded one... :oldrazz:

I'm not sure what duds you speak of because all of the CBMs released this year were good-to-great. Moreover, they all look like high art compared to the futile efforts of the old Captain America TV films, Spider-man '77, Batman '66, Punisher '89, The Swamp Thing films, etc. Those are only viewable for unintentional humor, as is just about everything from the dark ages of the comic book adaptation.

Dr Strange put itself on my #2 spot, making the year go 50/50 with good superhero movies. It wasn't enough to topple Civil War though, so my vote went to that.

1. Cap Civil War
2. Deadpool
3. X-Men Apocalypse
4. Suicide Squad
5. BvS

Update:

1. Cap Civil War
2. Doctor Strange
3. Deadpool
4. X-Men Apocalypse

6. BvS
