I don't see how the first and second pictures depict two different characters. Both the first and second show Clark Kent, and the third is Superman, which is a persona that reconciles both his human upbringing (Clark Kent) and his Kryptonian heritage (Kal-El.) Don't tell me you Superman fans are still clinging onto the three persona interpretation.

Supes is technicially three different people, but if you read the novelization of the movie....He views himself as Clark at his core...not the Clark Kent he presents to Metroplis and his co-workers...but Clark on the farm. Superman is a representation, and "Clark Kent" is.....Smallville Clark is his real self. He actually never views himself as Kal-El in the book at least.

Routh was perfect for the role. All his screentime amounted to not enough screentime for me. His Superman is not God-like and has enough humanity to actually relate to...can you believe that? A Superman you can RELATE to instead of just this all powerful mythical figure whom NOONE can relate to because he has no flaws. I felt for this guy on so many levels...probably most when he was
speaking to his son...as a father the pride that beamed from his eyes as he spoke to his son about what he will become and what Superman himself has become is worth the admission alone to me.

This movie is a great introduction for the new generation to something that Donner created so long ago. Let's hope that
the sci fi sequences of the words flying in and out asteroids and various star systems in the beginning with the credits are more along the lines of what Singer plans to do with the sequel
. Because a great sci fi movie is what a lot of people wanted with this movie...those and a few great battle sequences.

Just got home from the movie....and I must say: ROUTH IS SUPERMAN.

Surpassed Reeve, he was terrific.

Routh is good as Superman but I can't say he's surpassed Reeve, I've watched the old movies millions of times and always think of Reeve when Superman's mentioned.

It's okay to say that Routh has surpassed Dean Cain, I'm fine with that.

perfect all around 10/10..that shot of him liftin nk did it for me..so much power

Because Dean Cain set such a high standard of work as Superman...

Well actually, I really enjoyed his CLARK KENT!!!!

I'm not sure why the separation of Superman and Kal-EL. I voted for both of those as a 4.

I gave him a 2 as Clark, not because he wasn't good, but because the writers totally underdeveloped the Clark character. Seems to me his Clark was an imitation of Reeve's as Clark.

You've already revealed your reservations about his performance regardless of what you voted because of how you designed the poll. People don't comment on Christian Bale's performance as pissed off Bruce Wayne, Bruce Wayne at peace, and then Batman. There's just one performance period, a great actor could nail all of them. I gave him a 4. He was better than I thought, but Christopher Reeve is the only man who ever nailed the man in blue tights's mentality and deserves a 5. It's not Routh's fault, it's a soap actor competing against someone who attended Julliard. Whadya expect?

My favorite version's of SUPERMAN .

No offense, Kal-El 8, but I notice on this and other posts you have trouble with the apostrophe "s". On here, and in your sig. You seem like a smart person, so I doubt you want to be misunderstood.

This might save you from being teased in the future:

If you're referring to many things ("versions", from above, for example) there is no apostrophe. Just slap an s on the end of the word. No apostrophe.

If you're referring to something that belongs to someone or something ("superman's cape", for example) then you use the apostrophe.

I'm not trying to pick on you, but trust me, you absolutely kill the meaning of your sentences (and your signature, most of all) when you use the apostrophe "s" to indicate a plural "s".

And for some of you other guys: The word is "ridiculous" from the root word "ridicule", and not "rediculous". Learn it. Know it. Love it.

(Rediculous: The act of being diculous again?) See? It doesn't make sense!

Now, as for BR's performance: I though he nailed a great impression of Chris Reeve playing Superman/Kent. I was impressed. It was an interesting way to play it.

I just wish they hadn't cut so much out of the final print.

I was a big proponent of Routh all along, but...

I felt he was used as a prop for most of the movie. I think if you added up all of his lines, it would maybe be one page of script (not counting the jor-el lines he says in the end as a monologue).

I just wish he was given more to do. He definitely had a ton of fascial expression "smell the fart" type acting moments but in comparison to the original movie (STM), i thought that he said so little.

Routh was spot-on with all aspects of the character.

Only if the plot was as good as Routh (and the rest of the cast)

routh pulled it off... we have our superman for the next 10-12 years. awesome. but they should cut back on the mascara. ha. he was wearing more than bosworth. haha.

Routh was better than I expected. I'm very happy with his performance...(s). ;)

Brandon was better than I had expected too. I was so afraid of cheese I was peeking out gingerly for the first few lines.

He does Clark fairly well, but his Superman lacked gravitas. When he was acting like Clark, I definitely got the feeling that he was a dorky, clumsy goofball. When he was Superman, I got the feeling that he was still a dorky, clumsy goofball underneath the calm exterior. Not as much of a change as I would have liked. I was also a bit disappointed with his nonspeaking acting. Most of what he did to show concern was twitch his right eye.

But again, I wasn't terribly disappointed with the acting. He did a good job. And I still want to hug him everytime I see him onscreen, hehe.

It's not Routh's fault, it's a soap actor competing against someone who attended Julliard. Whadya expect?

Excellent point.

I was really impressed with Rout's comedic timing.

In the sequel, I still want to see him make the character more his own!!!!

Brandon Routh is to 2006 what Christopher Reeve was to 1978. when i watched Superman Returns tonight i was watching Clark Kent and Superman....not once did i see Brandon Routh. Singer couldn't have picked a better actor for the job. i'll admit that some of his acting was wooden, but for the most part...Routh nailed it. there's no doubt he'll be able to shine brighter in the sequel. nothing but appraisal from me. Routh did a damn good job on his debut as SUPERMAN!!!

routh's clark was perfect. i can't even say much more than that. his clark was just... clark (as lois said)

his superman was great. not perfect, but i liked it better than reeve's, which is saying alot.

i didn't see enough kal-el to say one way or the other, but it was also great. hopefully we'll see more on the dvd or in the sequel.

routh simply inhabited the role. if you watch him in interviews, he just exudes superman/clark-ness.

my one and only complaint is that we didn't see enough of either of them, but then again, i wanted a 4 hour movie, so, my wants were a bit unrealistic.

A better title for this poll would be "Rate Brandon Routh's performance as Christopher Reeve," because that's what it was.
In that case, he did a good job.

Brandon Routh sucks. What a poor actor. And what a bad boring movie...

I AGREE!

I was very let down... I atleast expected the action to make the movie no matter how bad the plot worth watching.
There was very little action in the movie, and the plot was just awfull... The acting overall stunk the place up too...

Routh = Superman
Smallville should just end, because he makes Welling look like a little girl now.

To me Routh IS Superman!

He is up there with Christopher Reeve for me and that says a lot so 5 all around though I really wish we saw more of him or he had more lines. But I can't blame Routh for that.
