Disney Moves ‘Soul,’ ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Release Dates

Disney announced on Monday morning that it will move the release dates for two of its upcoming animated films, Pixar’s “Soul” and Disney Animation’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” in response to ongoing theater closures due to the coronavirus.

“Soul,” which was slated for release in June, will now be released on November 20. “Raya and the Last Dragon,” which was slated for release on Thanksgiving weekend, will now be moved to March 12, 2021, filling a slot held by an untitled Disney live action film that has now been removed from the schedule.

“Raya and the Last Dragon” is written by “Crazy Rich Asians” screenwriter Adele Lim and follows a young warrior in Southeast Asia named Raya, who is in search of a shapeshifting dragon (Awkwafina). Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins are directors.

From what I saw on D23, this could be a lot of fun. Like it's basically an original fantasy story inspired by Asian folklore and myth. Did give me a bit of an Avatar Last Airbender vibe.

It definitely looks like it will be a fun epic fantasy adventure. I think they have a chance to put some cool action in this as well. Raya's companions look like they will be a charming, ragtag bunch.

If this gets move to Disney+, I'm going to be freaking devastated. Especially after that trailer, this NEEDS to be shown on the big screen. I love how "legendary" it feels, definitely more in line with the darker era than the last couple but still gorgeous and full of a very fun mythological mix.
