LOS ANGELES--Today at Ubisoft's press briefing, the publisher announced the next title in the 15-year-old Rayman series and revealed that it's going to change some things about the established franchise.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot took the stage this afternoon and revealed, via teaser trailer, Rayman Origins. The two-minute video reveal is narrated by a soft-spoken woman telling an origin story. The video shows a creature being born, later described as a "man," then corrected as a "vegetable," then finally categorized as a "thingamajig."
Laden with series-familiar mischievous humor, the trailer (embedded below) also introduces a new element: a sidekick. This companion is labeled Rayman's "double," then his "blood-brother," and finally his nondescript "it." The trailer then continues its comedic route and shows Rayman and his buddy slapping a rock giant's eyeballs and whimsically parading through the game's colorful worlds.
Created by Ubisoft's Ubi Art Framework, Origins will be released as episodic content. According to a post on the Framework Web site, the decision to release the game in chapters was made because "big games take a long time to make, which in turns makes their price high." Further, the company stated "with episodes, the price must be proportional to the size of the game" and that "episodes also let us imagine a longer and more developed saga than with a more 'classical' format."

The Rayman franchise, created by Michael Ancel, was born on the PlayStation in 1995 and has since spawned numerous sequels, including the zany Rayman Rabid Rabbits offshoot series.

No Rabbids= Good riddance.

I'm tired of the Rabbids, too. Nice to see they're getting back to basics.

I loved the original game. I stopped caring for it when it went 3D

Did anyone play the demo? It's actually pretty great. It has a fantastic art style and it gives off a great nostalgic feeling that brings back memories to the first game.

I played it this morning and was gonna post about it in the Loung thread as I forgot all about this one. It definetly was not what I was expecting. I thought this game was a remake of the original. The art style is so cute and fun and the game seems very well done. Im surprised its a $60 retail game bc I thought it was going to be a downloadable $15 title. They really dont do games like this anymore (at least outside of the Wii and even there they are rare) and its good to see 2D platformers not dead. Kinda bold of Ubisoft to release it like this but the game looks solid from what I played of it in the demo

I played the demo today.

I couldn't enjoy it because I sucked at it. :csad:

I'm looking forward to this. Though I've been so absorbed by Skyrim that I had no idea there was a demo.

Thinking about putting this on the Christmas list after seeing all the great reviews

Judging by the demo, this game is going to be absolute delight.

Giant Bomb review (5/5)

And this line from Joystiq's review pretty much sold me on the game:
Rayman Origins embodies the kind of creativity and craftsmanship that have been largely missing in 2D platfomers since their heyday in the 16-bit era. It harkens back to the likes of Earthworm Jim, bestowing every moment with whimsy, but still tossing in many of the tricks found in current gems like Super Meat Boy and 'Splosion Man.

Great to hear.

EDIT: Commerical with Kal Penn (Kumar).

I can see this doing quite well on the pc. I'll pick it up but it seems pretty lazy and/or stupid not to have internet co-op play.

Finished the game a couple weeks ago, it's great, anyone who's a fan of old school platforming games of the NES/SNES/Genesis era or if you liked New Super Mario Bros. or Donkey Kong Country on the Wii owes it to themselves to pick it up. It's extremely fun, you don't need co-op it's great just single player. At $20 you can't go wrong either.
