Hey all.

Recently, I began getting intrested in the character "Captain Marvel." I decided to do some reading on the guy, and found that I really like him. My only problem is that he seems - and really was when he was made - like a copy of Superman.

I was thinking about writing a series of fan-fics re-creating the Captain. Not TO much, just a couple details. There just seems to be a lot of material that you could jump into.

One change I was considering was taking his ability to fly away. It occured to me that Captain Marvel is more associated with lightning than Black Adam. I was thinking about letting Captain Marvel travel the clouds as lightning. The vision is kind of hard to explain, but it's very cool. :)

As for Black Adam, since he originated in Egypt - a place with a lot of sand, etc - I was thinking about giving him the ability to turn into wind. He could cause severe sand storms, tornados, etc like you'd see in Egypt.

The reason I'm passing this by the comic book folks is I don't want to turn off the fans of Captain Marvel to my fiction. I know how it is to have a favorite hero and have some crazy man ruin him on you (Superman Red/Blue).

So I just wanted to pass this by you. What do you guys think?

Meh, I'm not much for try to re-innovate Captain Marvel. He's good as he is, and I think having stuff like Black Adam capable of turning into wind dilutes the characters.

Hmm, I don't know.

His origin I love. It's very original. But when it comes to his powers... He's so much like Superman.

The character himself I don't want to change. I still want Billy to be Billy, Adam to be Adam. I still like the origin, I just don't like that he's so much like Superman.

Lots of characters are like Superman. They still manage to succeed.

while youre at it, give him organic webshoothers...

Judd Winnick is destroying Captain Marvel.

Winick's destroying Billy Batson, actually. It looks like Freddy will be pretty much the same old Captain Marvel that Billy used to be by the end of the mini-series.

Well, after doing some more reading, I've decided to keep the flying aspect.

A few minutes ago I watched a clip of Captain Marvel taking on Superman. While it was fun, I noticed he never used magic against Superman. Isn't Captain Marvel able to use magic?

So basically, I'm going to keep his powers. I might just focus a little more on the Magic aspect of him.

As for Billy, I'm going to keep him relatively good hearted kid. I saw that someone is trying to make him a Goth... What the hell?

Captain Marvel's powers are super strength, super speed, flight, invulnerability, superhuman stamina, and enhanced cognative capacities. Or, as they say in the comics:

Wisdom of Solomon, strength of Herculese, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilese, and speed of Mercury.

I'm aware. I was going to change the flight, but I've decided not to.

Physically -though he can hold his own against Supes - he's not a strong as Superman. I also don't think he's quite as fast, etc. But I do remember reading that he could cast spells.

How true is this?

It's the opposite of true. CM doesn't have any energy manipulation abilities (besides flight).

Hmm, give me a bit. I'm going to go back and re-read.

Yeah, as I said. Winnick is destroying Captain Marvel.

Is that the guy that's trying to turn Billy into a Goth?

Actually, he's pretty much Supes' equal in every way but the versatility of his powers. Cap can't cast spells, only call down the magic lightning.

I'm also pretty sure nobody is trying to turn Billy into a goth. I certainly haven't heard anything about that.

Not really. The only thing they have in common is superstrength and a cape

- Their alter-egos have NOTHING in common
- Their Origins have NOTHING in common
- Captain Marvel could fly before Superman (who could originally only leap great distances)
- Captain Marvel had a female and younger counter-part before Superman

Captain Marvel is fine, I'll like his nationality to change.
Black Adam - African
Captain Marvel - Black American or Spanish
Mighty Isis -African, Black Adam's love interest
Mary Marvel - Billy Batson's twin sister. Billy & Mary were given up for adoption at birth.
Billy was adopted by a white couple whom are archaeologists.

I didn't know that about the flight and whatnot. Coolies.

Since I've decided not to mess with his abilities. I think I might add more depth to Shazam - the wizard - and his history. The origin should be about the same, though.

I see a lot of potential in this character, though. LOTS. I wish DC would make him more main stream.

Too bad Marvel Comics, didn't purchase the rights to the Original Captain Marvel. DC only brought the rights to prevent Captain Marvel from out selling Superman.
