According to a press release, Marvel has announced it has authorized up to $100 million in new stock 'buybacks' just five days after former company honcho Avi Arad cashed out for $60 million on his way out the door as Marvel studio chief.

Marvel may now need to 'jump' the company's share price, which despite a recent spike is down more than 10% compared with a year ago.

The authorization comes as Marvel announces it spent $100 million in May on buybacks, bringing total buybacks to date to $600 million. $100 million is thought to be the Arad shares the company chose to absorb.

Concurrent with the buyback on Monday, Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac Perlmutter bought approximately 6 million shares at his option price of just over $2.

Marvel is in need of cash in a year with relatively few new films in release and with Arad's move abruptly forcing the company to absorb $60 million in shares.

The buyback also dispels rumors that Arad's departure is part of a larger plan to put Marvel up for sale. Buying back stock at a time when a company is in material sales discussions is a violation of SEC rules.

Arad exited Marvel last week to become a producer and immediately sold more than 3 million shares several days after shares had fully vested.

Marvel on Monday also released Arad's new employment agreement, where he will serve as executive producer on Spider-Man 3 and potential sequels, but has to work out a separate agreement with Sony for those services, which include serving as liaison between the studio and Marvel.

For his work as a 'creative consultant' Arad will get a bonus based on box office performance for either Ghost Rider or Spider-Man 3 in 2007.

Marvel also chose not to include the compensation Arad will receive as a producer on developing Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk features.[/FONT]

It won't, because the money for making films is put up by the company making the film. In return for letting the film company use their charactos, the film company gets 55 % of the take, Marvel gets 45 % of the take. It's just because of having to give Avi 60 million for his stock, the're just a little strapped for cash. And besides X-Men : last stand, there is no other Marvel movies till Ghost Rider in 2007. It won't affect the production of Marvel films at all, or how much is put into them. That's all up to Fox, Sony, ect. Just stuck that out there, in case anyone is felling sorry for Avi, and he earned every penny.

Here's a bugger for you -- Jessica Alba has indicated that Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman) will again find herself in a love triangle when Fantastic Four 2 arrives, but this time with The Silver Surfer. When it was hinted that Sue would get involved with another hero, I of course presumed this meant Namor, but apparently I was incorrect. Alba's exact comments were: "He's a little good and a little bad. So it's just a matter of, 'What does Sue Storm bring - the good or the bad - out of that boy?'" A rather glib description of Galactus' Herald, but I suppose it suffices. Aside from the excitement of seeing the Surfer, his appearance is good because it indicates a Galactus film on the horizon, most probably in the form of Fantastic Four 3.

On a somewhat related note, I have it on very good authority that earlier reports of the sequel being named The Next Chapter are nothing to worry about. The film will have a much better, much flashier title when it really gets moving, so we can all relax on the whole "what a lame title" deal.
