Superman Returns Re: The Offical Jason Appreciation Thread

Of course, I don't know all the plot points and haven't seen the movie but if the reviews I'm reading are true, it seems Superman had an affair with Lois without telling her who he is, leaves without telling Lois, gives a poor excuse for leaving Lois, family, etc....(the astronomers saw something...and I had to go see for myself) Superman tries to woo her away from her fiance under the assumption that she has a kid with the other guy, and the whole spying on Lois and Richard........

I think it would have been more gripping and mature for Superman to have told Lois he wanted to go investigate his roots and leave for 5 years, Lois being outraged....Superman saying "I need to discover my roots", and the complaint creates a rift in the relationship and then Superman decides to go anyway. That would have been more plausible to the characters. The whole "I made the decision without telling you because I knew you would do this" knowing that the decision impacts both characters comes across as selfish to me.

It seems that the acting and Routh 'emo' scenes and the Reeve nostalgic are gonna be used to draw the audience into bad premise and cover-up bad storyline...

BTW, I will see the film and hope that I'm impressed...I've been impressed with the action scenes, most of the acting, and the scenery and directing, but the storyline is the only thing still bothering me...

Now it sounds like you read what I said...glad that you see it this way. Sounds like you are really saying it's all a matter of how it's executed, which you so eloquently missed stating before since you were so damn busy agreeing with Matt...who has since departed from the arguement because I'm assuming he has nothing more to say or offer

Is it established in the movie how long Richard and Lois have been together? There's a big difference between Richard coming into Lois' life after Jason was born (and helping her raise HER son) and him believing he's the father. If they've been together since before Jason was born, then Lois is going to come across as a ****e because she would've had to have slept with Richard almost immediately after sleeping with Clark. (There's only a small window every month when a woman is fertile)

Is it established that Jason's last name is White? Because that would seem to indicate that Richard thinks he's the daddy.

Which is why the question of whether or not she KNOWS she had sex with Superman needs to be answered.

Also, is there a pre-requiste waiting period before you can sleep with another man after you have slept with another one. Do you want to offer up your own statistics as what is proof of a good waiting period?????

If Super-man is the father, but she doesn't know who he is....would she change his last name to "Man" or "EL" or something.....so it makes sense she whould call him "Lane".

from the reviews and spoilers from peopel who have seen it what happened in Superman 2 led to Jason. She knew who he was and they slept together. He took her memory away at the end of Superman 2 (unaware that she was pregnant)and he found out that parts of krypton may still be there so he leaves without telling her not to be a dick but because he feels he needs to go and he feels if he told her she would tell him not to go and he would listen, even though he thinks it is something he needs to do.

He's not trying to be a dick but he's doing something he feels he needs to do. Krypton is a part of him he only knows from descriptions from his dead father. If there is a chance that the info recorded by his father was not completly true (keeping in mind that everything was recorded before krypton blew up. if something happened and people could have survived, like he was told, then that's something he felt he needs to see) is it really that selfish to want to see if your heritage is still out there?

He then returns to see that Lois has moved on and teh fact is yes he still loves her and wants her. And the other fact is that she hates him because he left, and that hurts even more when he finds out she has moved on. He meets her to explain himself to her and yes they almost kiss. Then she says no she loves Richard, and he backs off, even though yes he is sad. He's not trying to be a homewrecker.

No he doesn't, and you KNOW he doesn't. You read the novel. Superman takes NOTHING. As a matter of fact, he lets Richard continue to be Jason's FATHER and flies off ALONE.

Yep and it is quite possible that in the sequel..Richard is no where to be found....my guess is him and Lois won't get married and will break it off and Lois will get together with Superman. I don't see Jason being in the sequels being a problem if handled right. I don't see Singer having him fly around and be a side kick to Superman.

No, it would make sense to call him Jason White. Now that she (at the end of the film) knows it might be different, but in SR he should be White if Lois doesn't know Supes is the father until the end of SR..

That's whats odd. Does she know prior to SR or not? Is so, Lane makes since. If not, White makes sense.

Well, I still see that as being selfish, I think it would have been the more appropriate, mature, and decent thing to do is say something to her before leaving for 5 years. Being a man and resolving the dispute face-to-face is always the heroic thing to do. Even if Lois doesn't agree and chooses not to forgive him, she'll have to appreciate that Superman letting her know what's what and that everyone is one the same page. It's fine to make a decision that a loved one doesn't agree with, but not letting them be aware of the decision especially when it impacts them it selfish and disrespectful to the other person, it sends the message I don't care about your input. The logic the movie put forward doesn't make sense, what does Superman anticipate once coming back froma 5 year unexplained absence. The reference you made to SII makes me even a little more worried and further adds to the theory that Superman will do pretty much anything out of convenience to himself even if it hurts or makes a mockery out of others.

I've yet to see a movie of this nature where they've introduced a kid subplot that was good. This has The Legend of Zorro/The Mummy Returns/Jurrassic Park/Every other crappy movie with a kid written all over it.

I agree, but at the same time he IS superman... I'm sure children is a dream come true. It really takes a superman to be a man in that spot.

If you say so man and you know what it is a bit selfish that he was afraid he wouldn't be able to go if she told him not to. that's why he blames himself and is not mad at her for getting on with her life. that's also why he is willing to step aside for their family
