First of all, you do not have to do it full time. I mean how could most people do it full time? If you are interested in the path of the RLS (real life superhero) then there are different ways to go about it. I'm currently working as a network operations center technician for a phone company. I make good money but not enough to just stop going to work! So then, time for my internal monolog ala the comic books:

"Why couldn't someone do some of the things batman does? I've made my suit as a hobby in my spare time. (Part of it was an extension of my old hobby of making medieval armor; the other part was that I had seen movies, cartoons and whatnot that put the idea in my head). I've lead an interesting life. I started boxing and wrestling when I was around 5 or 6 years old, took up martial arts around the age of 15, studied private investigating around 17 (took a correspondence course through the mail and studied some books from the library) and joined the army when I became an adult. After the army I went into the police academy and after that I joined the air force guard for 2 years. I've got all kinds of training in computers and telecommunications. I know chemistry, physics and biology from studying them in high school in college. I mean what skills does a guy like me lack? *Err I am getting a little old but I work out regularly and having a wife and kid definitely put a cramp in my style and take time away from the whole rls thing but even batman had to deal with the boy hostage IE: Robin*

End internal monolog. Anyhow if you really want to get into this kind of thing why not just join up with a neighbor hood watch and meanwhile save up the money for a bulletproof vest and get into some martial arts training. The other stuff is just icing on the cake.

"I say "You're crazy""

I say, "You're lazy."

Ancient warrior cultures like the Samurai or Ninja perfected both the body and mind, to an extent almost incomprhreensible to our western culture. It's a kind of quasi-religious mystical training. If someone tried hard enough, if someone had the natural gifts, if someone had the resources, perhaps he could transform himself into a sort of pinacle of physycal condition on all levels.
Some Tibetian Monks levitate. Some martial arts masters emanate energy from the tip of their fingers. There's a lot of weird stuff out there. Maybe someone could be as good as Batman. Add the fact that Bruce Wayne made his training in the Orient, which englobes a much more spiritual, and therefore much more transcendent form of training, and myabe someone like Batman could exist. The pinacle of training and will.

It would be wonderful to make a fictional issue of Time, looking at the phenomenon of The Batman of Gotham City like Wikipedia, for instance, looks at the Mothman. There would always be speculation, believers and skeptics. But I have no doubt the legend part of it would leave an unforgetable mark on pop culture.

Why do you think the FBI would even pursue a vigilante? They have murderers, rapists, etc. to catch. And if the city was in as bad of shape as Gotham was why would they want to stop someone that was helping the city out by catching major criminals?

I could've hinted I was joking I apologize.
:O

I think the FBI would. It would be a publicity thing.... a message: "don't be a vigilante!" campaign. I could totally see it.

You want to see a suit? OK here is an old version of it:
http://www.geocities.com/beeriobeer/SuitMarch16.html
If I look a bit stiff it is because I'm bunching up my muscles so I look more muscular! Bahahahahaha! The suit is actually very flexible and comfortable except it is a little hot in the summer time.
I'm in better shape these days. I do a Army PT test every week before my weekend. I'm up to 80 pushups and 60 situps now (within two minutes) -not bad for an old man.
If you want to know more about the suit I have it all written out in the private area of my forum:
http://p075.ezboard.com/breallifesuperheroeshttp://www.geocities.com/beeriobeer/SuitMarch16.html

thats not old at all Beerio. i got you by at least 4 yrs.

The suit looks impressive to say the least....very realistic. Keep up the good work. I might incorporate something like that in a suit I'm thinking up.

Shadow out

Where's Salemdog when you need him!?

At any rate, always a fun discussion. Theoretically, Batman could easily exist. But as he exists in the comics, BW/Bats has an Einstein intellect with Edison's penchant for invention; the fighting skills of Bruce Lee x100, and the physicality of an Olympic gold-medalist, all on a 6'2 bodybuilder frame with movie star good looks. Not to mention, most important of all, a limitless fortune that would make Howard Hughes and Bill Gates look like paupers.

Now, do you know of any breathing human who has all that wrapped into one? Of course not! But it's not a far stretch in the slightest to conceive that IF there was someone like that who devoted their life and fortune from the tender age of 8 onwards to training and fighting criminals that it could happen. It might not be 100% recognizable as Batman, but something pretty damn close.

All of Batman's technology already exists in one form or the other. While you may debate the practically of a "bat-wing glider" and memory fabric, or swinging around a city on a cable, then that's merely getting into semantics. You merely need to research David Belle and Le Parkour to see how one can easily traverse an urban environment through years of training.

you want real life hero? the closest thing you'd ever get to it is The Punisher... and that too more or less a lamer version...

And stopping a hero does not make one look bad? Besides, Batman's just one man and he can't do everything, so the police should have plenty of moments to shine...

And the Feds actually have any sort of respect as it is in the present day? Look at the embarassments over the past decade that they have had....the Unabomber, Jeffery Damher, and lets not forget BTK who by the way was right under their noses all along.

The FBI and other agencies dont need to look bad by doing such a thing if they had to....they do the job of looking bad all by themselves. In a Batman scenerio, I wouldnt be surprised if the Feds and cops actually would be asking for his help and to be honest, they need all the help they can get.

Shadow out

Well now let's not go overboard there Shadow. I think the best one could hope (if he didn't come up front to them and tell them he was going to do it like Captain Jackson did: http://www.captainjackson.org/captainjackson/
) - would be that they wouldn't bother to track him down. You guys keep talking like there is a doubt that someone can dress up in a costume and fight crime, but it IS being done. I'm not going to say it is being done at a level of competency that Batman has, but it IS being done.

Sure there could be. If someone was as devoted as Wayne. There could be. He would never be AS good, because well...that's just reality. One man would not be able to survive as long as Bats. But it could definately happen. Think about how easily you get scared walking down a dark, quiet street at night. If some dude has wicked ass training and just jumped from the shadows or a not so high building (like a variety store). Wouldn't you **** your pants. Cape or no cape, cowl or no cowl...it would be scary because this thing would be there out of no where, and OWN you. And you wouldn't know who it was...or what it was...

It is definately POSSIBLE... but is it LIKELY? ...no. lol

There is a difference:)
