Just curious as to whether or not anyone can recommend some good Iron Man material to read, along with issue numbers?
Thanks

Hi LanShark,
I've been out of the collecting side for a long time, but can recommend a few trade paperbacks that will get you into some of Iron Man's biggest storylines. It's easiest to simply link to the Amazon pages for illustration, I am not intending to shill for them. I think the descriptions contain issue #s.
I understand Iron Man: Extremis is a significant influence for the movie, and boasts some incredible artwork. A simple but mature story, it's my second favorite Iron Man storyline.
My first favorite is Iron Man: Armor Wars. This is considered by many to be Iron Man's heyday, with the classic crew of Bob Layton, Mark Bright, and David Michelinie. Great for the cavalcade of armored baddies, and also great to see Iron Man go rogue.
Also worthy of note are the issues that collect the Obadiah Stane storyline, first appearing in #163 through #200. If memory serves, issues #185-200 are the real meat of Stane's storyline, but I'm old and so's my brain. You'll be set if you can get your hands on 190-200. This is the character that Bridges is playing in the movie, but the role has been altered from the books. A very bad@ss villain. Hopefully a trade paperback will be released when sequel-time comes.
Lastly, the Demon in a Bottle storyline is comic history and said to be a focus for the sequel. Tony the alcoholic falls prey to his corporate foes.
I was never a big fan of the War Machine, but he'll also be a major player in a sequel. Maybe Google is your friend there. You can run an Amazon search to see what other older trade paperbacks are available, collecting stories from the '60s and '70s.
I hope this is helpful to you, and I hope to see others who are more current in their reading give more suggestions, cause I'm curious to know where to get the best of the most recent.![]()
What are some core basics of Iron Man? Like the origin tales? The movie hype has got me pumped and I'm interested in checking out the source material.
I'll agree with the above two posters, I only received the Execute Program TPB a few days ago and that in conjunction with Extremis is a wonderful introduction to the character, I guess pre-Civil War.
Is the Extremis trade a good place to start? Do I need any prior knowledge on Iron Man?
i dont read Iron Man but i did have a somewhat off-topic question: What's the difference between Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Invicible Iron Man? like is he just "mr director" in SHIELD and it's about the organization or does he still do his hero thing, or is that what Invincible is for? im curious because 1. i wanna know why he has two titles, 2.im kinda considering picking him up, and 3. with S.H.I.E.L.D. being so prominent in Marvel lately, why they haven't had their own title.
Just a quick question, is the Iron Man:HyperVelocity TPB in continuity with Extremis and the rest?
